Naadir Tharpe is one of the best basketball players to ever come out of Worcester. I remember seeing him in the Final Four while he was at Kansas and saying, “I saw that little booger play at St. Peter Marian when he was in 8th grade.” It felt cool to say that I was from the same town as a kid who was on the fast track to make the NBA.

Fast forward to 2014. Second seeded Kansas loses to 10th seeded Stanford in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. A week later this picture is put on Twitter BY THARPE  with some married school nurse:

After that he announced he was leaving Kansas to go to the NBA. The problem is he’s 6 foot nothing and no one in the NBA wants him. He didn’t have much luck finding consistent work overseas, and couldn’t even hack it with the Lakers D-League team. Fast forward to February of 2015 and he was making his professional debut…..in the Worcester Courthouse records.

Well, when you’re a Worcester kid with a dream, and your professional basketball career ends at the age of 22, you have to move on to plan B for Worcester kids – laucnhing your rap career with a Worcestertastic Youtube video. For the past few months it’s been generally assumed that Get Down Productions has no real competition in the 508. Then Naadir Tharpe came out with this tweet last night:Screen Shot 2015-06-11 at 3.47.56 PM

Oh sweet Jesus. This I gotta see:

No offense Naadir, but this song makes me want to drive off of a bridge. I’m gonna sound like an old dude right now, but rap music nowadays blows. Back in my day we rocked out to Gin and Juice, the Chronic 2001, and eventually 50 Cent. All of it was fun music. The lyrics were irrelevant because it was great party music that somehow accomplished the unthinkable – it got white guys to dance.

But what exactly is this supposed to be? What is up with you kids these days and this terrible, terrible form of “rap music.” I’m not even mad though. I genuinely feel bad for you that you think this is good. The fact that this is on when you go to parties is just terribly unfortunate for your generation. I’d rather sit through an Old Balls lecture about Louis Farakkhan.

This song sounded like everything I’ve ever heard from Lil Wayne and Drake. Those two are all the rage with the kids these days and every song they make sounds just like this Worceester ballad. It’s like a mixture of talking and off key singing, done over with a computer to make it sound like the woman who gives me directions from my OnStar.

Now let’s talk about the video. I never thought I’d see the day when I said, “They were better off shooting this video in the Building 19 parking lot,” but Naadir Tharpe just found a way to make me yearn for these images:

Obviously this kid has made some REALLY great life choices. I mean, why finish off your FREE college degree at Kansas when you can drop out of school and make a Worcester rap video? And let me tell you, the lighting for this video was on point!!

Screen Shot 2015-06-11 at 8.29.15 PMScreen Shot 2015-06-11 at 8.47.53 PM

And the scene settings couldn’t have possibly been more glamorous. You think these guys are gonna film their rap video outside of Stop n’ Shop? LOL. No, if you played ball for Kansas then you shoot your rap video outside of the Telegram and Gazette

and of course the Belmont Street catwalk

And it wouldn’t be a Worcester rap video without a token white guy hardo. And since Matt Money wasn’t available they had to settle for this guy, who apparently was packing a bow and arrow:

Screen Shot 2015-06-11 at 8.37.36 PM

No offense pal, but you couldn’t hold Matt Money’s money clip of $1 bills. Hey guys, can I be in your next rap video?

Screen Shot 2015-06-11 at 8.33.50 PM

OK, sorry for asking. Can I at least get one of those shirts?

Screen Shot 2015-06-11 at 8.57.33 PM

Alright, I get the point. Tough crowd.

I wanna like these guys I really do. But what’s up with all this talk about how they’re gonna kill me if they don’t “feel me.” Can’t we just agree to disagree Naadir? Why did we have to jump straight to the murdering?

If I could give Naadir and The Fam a little piece of advice, it would be to make their songs more inclusive. Instead of listing all the people you’re not “feeling,” how about you talk about some of the things I can do to get you to feel me? At least then we can begin to move the conversation forward.

For instance, what’s up with you saying, “If you ain’t from the 508 we don’t feel you”? What if you’re from the 774? I got my phone after they ran out of 508 numbers. Does that still count? Does Naadir Tharpe feel me then? Oh yea, and Cape Cod is in the 508 too. Fitchburg isn’t. So you’re telling me Naadir Tharpe and The Fam feel me if I live in P-Town, but not if I live in the Burg? Can we get a quick clarification on that?

And I was going to ask Naadir about what it was like to play at a national powerhouse like Kansas, but then he said this in the song:

“When you see me don’t speak about KU. Success in my city brings hate too.”

Ummmm, yea easy for you to say Naadir. I picked you guys to go to the Final Four and you lost to Stanford. Goddamn Stanford!! Do you understand that those kids actually have to go to class at Stanford? They don’t have lucrative rap careers to fall back on if the NBA doesn’t work out. But at Kansas you don’t have to go to class. Your job is to play basketball and go to the NBA. Sorry bro, but I feel like you at least owe me an explanation about what the fuck happened that game.

It’s just kind of crazy to watch the evolution of a Worceter kid. Two years ago Naadir Tharpe was doing this:

Screen Shot 2015-06-11 at 9.10.16 PM Screen Shot 2015-06-11 at 9.11.25 PM Screen Shot 2015-06-11 at 9.12.22 PM Screen Shot 2015-06-11 at 9.13.13 PM

Now he’s doing this:

Screen Shot 2015-06-11 at 8.22.47 PM Screen Shot 2015-06-11 at 8.22.28 PM Screen Shot 2015-06-11 at 8.46.27 PM

I guess the next time I’ll see him on TV is at the VH1 awards. This proves once again that you can take the kid out of Worcester by bringing him to Lawrence, KS, but you can never take the Worcester out of the kid.

In all this I dont see that one person has suggested Naadir pick up a Bible! I use to baby sit him when he was way younger and he is a good CHILD and not a KID aka Baby Goat (Matthew 25_31-46) It took me until I was 37 to read and apply it and by the comments doesnt look like many of you have! Our people die from lack of knowledge! Well the knowledge that the Bible which is an acronym for the Basic Instructions Before Leaving Earth, speaks about is the Holy Spirit! The picture of Naadir and that lady shows she is the help in the FLESH and not the spirit! She helped him be totally unfocused! If she was the respectable chic the Bible speaks on (Proverbs 31) she would have helped to ground him AND there would be NO SEX before they married! LOVE not LUST is the message!

Naadir will be just fine! Well I pray he will! #TRUTH

Turtleboy attacking a man chasing a childish dream, how ironic. I’m glad you’re sticking to topics you you have knowledge of.

At least he’s much younger than you (and still picking up hot women), you’re life is just fucked.

So did you spend a significant amount of time in your room feeling jealous of Naadir’s early success and secretly hoping he would fail? You are way too happy that his basketball career did not pan out. The Catholic schools in Worcester are known for grabbing inner city kids and pushing them through school to make their athletics programs more appealing. It’s unlikely that Naadir ever had to actually try in school, so how did you expect him to finish at Kansas? And seeing how all he was ever pushed to do was play basketball, what skills would you expect him to use now to better his life? Even if he is trying to pull this “rap career” thing, he is 22 years old and has plenty of time to turn his life around, and has probably experienced more exciting things in his 22 years than you have in your entire life. Way to out yourself as a jealous, bitter, old white dude. You have probably been rotting in worcester for your entire life

At least Worcester looks like a city in this video and not a dirty parking lot with some trailer trash hanging out in it. As a fan of the rap music since back in the days of Big L and Tupac, this song is an abortion. Check your autotune guys. It sounds like fucking shit.
