Owner Of D’Amicis Bakery Decides To Fuck Over Everyone By Collecting Money For Orders Knowing They Were Closing, Not Telling Employees, Cleaning Out Cash Register

D’Amici’s is a north shore chain bakery that’s been around pretty much my entire life. It was a successful, well run Italian bakery owned by the Toretta family for 20 years. Then in December of 2017 they sold it to Sandrine Coyer, who apparently has run it into the ground based on this Facebook post made yesterday:

They’re acting like they just found out about this today, but in reality these douche mongrels knew this was coming for weeks and just didn’t bother telling employees or customers. Don’t worry though – they were still taking money for orders they knew would never be filled.

They’ve gotten some bad reviews on their Facebook page since new ownership came on board.

And they couldn’t be bothered to tell their dozens of employees at any of their three locations either because….fuck them.

According to the Lynn Item Live an employee they spoke with said that paychecks have been bouncing.

And instead of treating the employees like human beings so they could try to find new jobs before the holidays, they elected to write “sorry we are closed out of business” and send them text messages at 4 AM on Monday.

Oh, and video surveillance Salty Sandine clearing out the cash register in Melrose knowing that she’d never be back in there.

Previous ownership is understandably bullshit about it, since it was the family business they built for two decades was destroyed in less than two years.

Sources are saying that the new owners had no idea how to run an Italian bakery, they were buying supplies from Market Basket, reusing parchment paper, and freezing cakes for months.

But please Salty Sandrine, tell me more about how you “poured everything you had” into this business. Because the business was perfectly fine when you bought it, and had been since 1993.

The most gutless part about this is that they’re blaming previous ownership because they “discovered things had been hidden from us.” When you buy a business they have to disclose those sorts of things to you. Of course she doesn’t list what those things are, probably because she’s completely full of shit.

But it’s not her fault because there were “no alternatives.” Sure, she could’ve been a decent human being and told her employees that they were all going to lose their jobs, but she was too busy writing those handwritten signs and clearing out the cash registers.

This is considered a layoff so workers qualify for benefits thank god. I love how charitable the new owner was in her old post now all her workers will be in the breadlines this winter because of her. Ironic. Workers get help if u need to this is not your fault. Unemployment fuel assistance and catholic charities is there for emergencies like this. Keep your head up.

Restaurants are hard work. Period. The original owners had the benefit of starting small, and learning as they grew. That is very different than being thrown into a multi-store operation. It was a bad idea to think this couple could just walk in and take over a business like this.
My wife loves to bake. But can she run a bakery (times three?) Fuck no.

Here is what I imagine probably happened… the previous owners worked 12-14 hour days 7-days a week. That my friends = success.

The new owners only wanted to work 8-hour-days, 5-days-a-week, and let the employees do the rest. They expect week-long vacations and days off. That my friends = failure.

The original owners knew that bakeries are losing popularity. They could see it in their financials. As fat as we Americans are, we don’t go to the bakery to buy a cake every week. Why would we go to a bakery? Have you seen the bakery department at a Wegman’s? It has everything you could ever dream about in terms of a sweet tooth desire.

The buyers didn’t do their due diligence. FACT.

Owners should have first watched more you tube videos to learn business skills, like buying from Costco, not Market Basket.

Looks like the electricity may have been shut off for nonpayment, which might explain the flashlight and abrupt closing. If so, not a good idea to play chicken with the electric company.

What did she gain by withholding that info from her employees? Free labor? Is that all? I understand that she defrauded these customers, but was free labor all she got out of it?

Not really because several months notice (I think up to 3) to the employees is required by law to be given by the employer if they know a business is going to close, or else the principals can be liable for some pay even after the business is shut, and liable to fines.

Looks like Salty had a gofundme a couple of years ago…”family project”…complete with an awesome sentograph. Clip:

“Why vegan and gluten free customers shouldn’t be able to taste our good pastries as well? Let’s make some French pastries for them as well. The goal was to bring French food to your mouths wasn’t it? Our true goal is to make it affordable and accessible for everyone. To do so, we want to associate our bakeries with causes that matter to us, with charitable organizations that we are already in touch with, with schools that help the ones who need it. With all the food we’ll produce, we believe waste should be donated, distributed to people who need it. We believe food brings everyone together, and with the small power we have, we want to use it right. “

The fact that they cleaned out the cash registers in the dark of night with a flashlight tells you that they knew what they were doing was wrong! Otherwise, why not turn the lights on? I feel bad for all the people out of a job and the people that have deposits, have pre-purchased bakery items, or bought gift certificates! What a scam!!
