Sometimes we get good emails from turtle riders and we like to publish them. This one fit the bill…..

Remember when management at WEEI Sports Radio had balls? Yea, neither do I.

On Friday, Feb 9th, former Patriots Tight End and mid-day personality Christian Fauria did an impression of Tom Brady’s agent, Don Yee, who is American born, but of Asian descent. Fauria’s poor attempt at a humor was full of blatant stereotypes and, perhaps even worse, wasn’t really that funny. The PC mafia immediately began calling for Fauria’s head and the station quickly issued and apology and a weeklong suspension for the jock turned yakker.

WEEI issued the following statement via their twitter account on Friday night:

“Earlier today during his show, Christian Fauria impersonated athlete agent, Don Yee in an insensitive and ill-conceived attempt at humor. We regret Christian’s commentary and we apologize to Mr. Yee and those offended by the segment. We do not support or condone Christian’s comments, and we have suspended him for five days effective immediately.”

Listen, I get it. It was a stupid thing to do, especially in Boston in 2018. For his part, Fauria also issued an apology via his own Twitter account:

“Earlier today I made a horrible attempt at humor. In a segment during the show, I impersonated agent Don Yee in an insensitive and regrettable way. I want to publicly apologize to Don and anyone in the audience who heard it. I have also reached out to Don directly to personally apologize. I have been disciplined by WEEI management and I fully support their decision.”

This really should have been the end of the story. However, the Perpetually Offended weren’t satisfied.

Immediately there was a campaign to suspend the other mid-day hosts, Boston sports radio icon Glen Ordway and former Red Sox utility guy Lou Merloni, for simply laughing along to Fauria’s impersonation. WEEI Sponsors also began receiving calls to pull their advertising from the station’s airwaves. At least one sponsor, The Mass State Lottery, caved to the public outcry and pulled their ads from WEEI.

Here’s the thing. WEEI’s ratings are through the roof. Under the station’s previous management, hosts were encourage to stick to sports and the ratings plummeted. Coupled with the arrival of newcomer 98.5 The Sports Hub, it looked like WEEI was in serious trouble. Cue a change in management and content, and you have a comeback story for the ages. WEEI’s programming is now more of a soap opera than sports talk. Hosts from various shows seem to be perpetually feuding with one another. The A.M. drive show, Kirk and Callahan, are regularly embroiled in controversy and making headlines. The infighting and “peek behind the current” certainly make for more compelling radio for some listeners than discussions of the box score from last night’s game.

Today, WEEI once again caved to public pressure and issued the following:

That’s right. There will be no live programming for an entire weekday so that the entire staff of the station can undergo “sensitivity training.” Are you *BLEEP*ing kidding me!?

What ever happened to jokes? Do you remember when we could make fun of someone or something and everyone would laugh? No one got offended because we all knew that it was a joke. Now it’s as if laughter has been outlawed. Heaven forbid that you imply that white guys can’t dance, black guys like fried chicken, or Asian women can’t drive. You’re inviting a lynch mob to gather outside your front door. I’ve bonded with some of my best, life-long friends through offensive humor. Really, who cares? The PC Police is literally robbing us all of laughter and joy.

The larger question remains, though. Why does WEEI keep caving to these whiners? As I said before, ratings across all of their weekday shows are higher than they have ever been. The morning drive show is the highest rated show of any format in the Boston radio market. Whatever they’re doing over there, people are listening in record numbers. Generally speaking, people aren’t going to listen to something they hate or find offensive. The same question applies to advertisers. The point of advertising is to get your message heard by as many people as possible. Why would you pull your ads from a station with that many listeners? Why intentionally reduce the number of people who will hear your message?

The bottom line is that the PC Police and the perpetually offended are the vocal minority. Most of us like offensive humor. We like a good laugh at someone’s expense, or even at our own. It’s ok to laugh every once in a while. Humor doesn’t divide normal people, but rather unites them. However, as long as we keep caving to those who scream the loudest, they continue to be emboldened to make even more ridiculous demands.

To the PC Police, you are the few. We are the many. Shut up, sit down, and laugh a little!

Yeah, God forbid your hospital be a meritocracy. Because making money for a sleazy hedge fund manager like John Henry is WAY more important than SAVING PEOPLE’S LIVES, amirite?

Yes they give the training on a Friday. Why? Because all the headliner’s on the weekday segments are off on the weekend. This isn’t so much a training session as it will be laying down the law!!
Everyone will be “instructed” on the “new” method’s for conducting the on air programs. They all will be given a style book on how, what and when to discuss all material.
Don’t think the bigs will ask for feedback.
I’ll listen Monday morning to see what Kirk and Callahan’s take is on this.

Diversity will be the downfall of a once great nation. See Roman Empire ca. 100AD.

Think the wrong people are getting the training. These fine folks should be getting trained not to be that sensitive.Laugh at yourself once and awhile and your life will be a lot better. You are not that important, just get over yourself and enjoy life.
