Reader Email (from someone who sells liquor): Why does Mass ban the purchase of alcohol on Memorial Day? So we can send all our customers to New Hampshire? That’s a great move obviously. NH should send us a Christmas card for the extra $100k they’ll pull in Monday from Massachusetts boozers. A vet fights for our country and risks his life and can’t buy a 6 pack of Bud Heavy to enjoy on Memorial Day? That makes perfect sense. It’s interesting to note how Budweiser has a new marketing campaign and is changing Bud Heavies to “America” for the summer. Not selling 30 brick America’s on Memorial Day is the most un-American thing of all time. Ask 10 out of 10 vets if they want a fruit punch, root beer float or an ice-cold beer on their special day and I bet you $5 they chose a brick of America. I can understand a religious holiday like Easter or Christmas, but Memorial Day? GTFO.

Never thought of this before, but the emailer is right. This is outrageous and un-American. Ya know who doesn’t allow the sale of booze? ISIS. Why are we doing ANYTHING that ISIS does? New Hampshire’s slogan is “Life free or die.” Our slogan in Massachusetts should be “Anything ISIS can do, we can do better,” or “ISIS with less beheadings and more gay pride flags.”

But seriously, if a store doesn’t wanna open on Memorial, that’s cool. We respect any business that wants to respect those who made the ultimate sacrifice so we can breath this sweet, delicious freedom. Can’t say enough about how much we respect veterans here and everything they’ve done and continue to do. But the emailer is right – veterans should be able to buy booze on Memorial Day if they want to, and stores should be allowed to sell it to them if the choose to.

Why is this one particular state taking away their rights? Oh, that’s right – this is what we do in Massachusetts. We don’t allow people to smoke pot, gamble, buy booze on Sundays (until fairly recently), or let bars stay open past 2. But somehow the Lottery is still a thing because every hack politician has a cousin that needs a government job.

People wonder how New Hampshire can survive without an income tax. It’s simple really – they border Massachusetts. If they bordered a state with freedom they’d be screwed.

Since bud comes in 36 packs, that’s all I buy. If you buy a six pack at a time then it’s your problem if you can’t make it past Memorial Day.

I carry my draft card with me. My number was too high and I was not called. I remember others in my neighborhood who went to Vietnam and came home in a box. All because of a number. Haunting.

Remember the fallen, honor those who served, ignore the booze. Buy it the day before if you have to drink to forget.

It’s a day set aside to honor those who died while serving our country, and by extension, a day to honor the dead in general.

Pretty somber and sober occasion. Sad that Massachusetts has to legislate respect for the dead by not letting alcoholics (not veterans) buy booze they could have bought 360 other days this year.

Spend an hour or two cleaning up your family’s gravestones rather than wasting that time driving to New Hampshire to buy a “brick”.

I’m a veteran, 5 years active duty, the last 21 months in South Vietnam. Not everyone I served with came home.
think about them. Remember the words of Gunny Highway, Improvise. Adapt. Overcome. In other words buy in advance of the holiday.

Thank you for your service juror seven. I was there as well. Not in Vietnam a bit younger but our more recent clashes with anti-America. Trained originally U.S. Army 11B10 Infantry Fort Benning Georgia then after a while 95B10 Military Police at Fort Mcclellan Alabama for a switch in M.O.S.

Maybe spend time at the cemetary or at a memorial service. This ain’t Veterans Day. Not about the cookout or booze.

Amen to that! Besides, if you can’t buy a six pack or even a 30 pack on Saturday and have trouble saving some to drink on Monday? Then it’s time to assess whether or not you have a drinking problem.

Of course I am someone who feels that alcohol shouldn’t be marketed on TV and have lost too many people to drunk drivers to feel it does anything but destroy lives. Yeah yeah the heroin epidemic is bad but typically the only people H users end up killing are themselves… Just sayin.

So packie store owner…hate me for it but I wish to hell you woukd go out of business. You won’t I know, because people are too busy trying to escape themselves but you are no better in my eyes than a drug pusher…
