Remote Learning Is Child Abuse Part 1: Testimonials From Parents And Teachers

I made a statement last week that some people disagreed with – remote learning is child abuse. I know this because I see it every day with a five year old who is unable to make friends and thinks an education is staring at a computer for 3-5 hours a day. Her gym class involved standing up and doing jumping jacks in her bedroom for the web cam. Every day is a battle just to convince her to log on. This is the reality of what remote learning is, and we must never forget that the reason we’re doing it is because the leaders of the MTA are PRETENDING to be afraid of a virus.

The media is not reporting on what remote learning really involves, so that’s where TB comes in. I asked turtle riders to send in their stories of remote learning and gave them the option of sending me videos and pictures of their kids for publication. I’ve been flooded with them so I’m gonna break this into a couple blogs. Remember while reading these that the reason we are doing this is because local school committees are bowing to union hacks who are threatening to withhold their labor if they are forced to be around our children.

My 4th grader is doing ok so far but my second grader has legit been crying the entire morning just sitting at his little desk in front of his chrome book.  He yelled out loud at one point “I wish I was in school and it would be better.” Heartbreaking.  I’d be lying if I said I didn’t cry myself last night and then some more today when they were outside after their short lunch break watching them playing and smiling knowing when time was up they’d have to go back and stare at a screen.  I really don’t know if I’ll make him go on again tomorrow because it is traumatizing him. Traumatizing is such a dramatic word but in this case it’s perfect.  I feel bad for your kid too starting off this way.  They’re all being robbed and it’s disgusting

Wareham

I’m a single working mom so obviously my babysitter is helping my daughter. The babysitter is my 73 year old grandmother who has no idea what she’s doing but I have no other choices because I can’t not work. It’s ridiculous that they expect us to work and do the teacher’s job as well. The poor teachers now have to answer a million questions because nobody has any idea what to expect right now. Let’s not forget they’re having kids go to school 2 days a week for half days, I didn’t know Covid waited 4 hours to enter the building. If I’m gonna risk my kid getting Covid why wouldn’t they get maximum use of the day? Now I have to leave work early to get my child as well?

Carver

My daughter is in the second grade. Today they had a drawing assignment. My daughter loves to draw! The assignment was a self illustration. Then to my surprise it had to include a Face Mask! Attached a screenshot of the teacher example. She was drawing along with the class.

Regardless of how you feel about masks, we haven’t put any thought whatsoever into the psychological effect we’re having on kids to teach them that they must cover their face with a mask or risk dying from a virus.

My son is 6 he is autistic and also ADHD. All his work needs to be done by 3 pm everyday, even though I work until 2pm and we do not get home and get settled until 2:30 pm everyday and if it is not submitted he is marked absent. I’ve made it clear I work full time because I am a single mom who does things alone and they responded with well who ever he is with needs to do it with him. Which in our case is hard considering my mother who suffers from MS is the one who watches him and she can’t sit there with him for hours without being in pain. They want him to sit there for 3 hours and stare at a computer screen. They give little breaks to move. My son cried off and on the entire day. We thought he would be able to at least chat with his classmates to have some sort normality. That wasn’t the case. We had to stay muted until we were called on. He had a full on melt down when the day was done because he couldn’t even talk to his friends. I had snapped this picture of him breaking down because I quote “sitting here is to hard for me my mom. I promise I’m trying”

Chicopee

We are doing remote learning in Chicopee, one of nine elementary schools, with all the distractions of 11 kids in a zoom at once, some of them without parents near them. Some of them with ratchet parents in the background who forget to mute. It’s heartbreaking to see my 5 year old son go through this. My child is extremely active, loves to be social and has not been social distanced, masked up or scared. However this situation he’s un interested, distracted, cries, loses focus cries more. I’m with him all day next to him through all of it, and by the end of it I’m wiped and have a headache. We need to fight back as parents these kids need to be back in school without mask without testing and stop toying with education.   Here are some pics from the last three days of remote learning with my son

Teacher

The part of your article that I take issue with is where you basically shit on all teachers. I personally agree that kids need to be in the classroom and that it is developmentally inappropriate for children to be in front of a screen all day.  My union, like MANY others rallied against the fear and impracticality, but it was the community who wanted it this way. No one asked for or listened to our input.  We had awesome ideas for facilitating work-study internships, community college partnerships, and fieldwork for older high school students, and utilizing the extra space in high schools to allow elementary and middle schoolers to have a full return. We got crickets. The majority of teachers in MA are now stuck in this hybrid hell.  It isn’t protecting teachers.  We are still in school every day working with rotating groups of students.  The hybrid model is for the benefit of the administration so they can say, “look at what we are doing to protect your babies.” It is not for teachers.

Teacher

So as I bust my butt teaching my students in person, online, and still mustering the enthusiasm to respond politely to the 400+ emails I get every day, I’d appreciate not being lumped together with the cry baby fear mongerers. And as far as teachers just collecting paychecks, please know I’m a parent too and I live in the district in which I work. I, too, pay over $12k per year in property taxes. I can’t be at home with my kids during their remote learning days, so I had to enroll in private school.  After insurance and tuition, I ALMOST break even, but not quite. This is hard for all of us, but not all cops are bad, and not all teachers are lazy pieces of shit.

Single Mom battling cancer

I’m a 36 year old single mom with two boys. I was diagnosed with cancer in November 2019; Thanksgiving Day. I finished treatment March 2020. One week later the world shut down. I survived cancer, I survived taking my boys to sports practice after chemo and radiation every single day. I survived March-August; COVID free. I’ve had multiple COVID tests because of the job I have working with compromised individuals. I have a compromised immune system; yet I worked every single day because I’m an essential employee, even with my immune system. I fought to go to work because I wasn’t going to bail on my coworkers. I worked through treatment. I can work through a pandemic.  My son has a compromised immune system due to various illnesses. And yet, I want my children in school.

The first day of remote learning; by 9:01am I was in tears. Two kids; one in 1st and one in 4th… and I’m trying to work from home. My job is flexible which thankfully they are because if not I wouldn’t know what to do. I work from home the days my hybrid children are remote.

I can’t answer calls because one of them needs help logging in, connecting to WiFi, spelling, typing, pencils sharpened, crayons missing, snacks, questions, help with everything. I’ve had to apologize to potential new employees since March for the MMA cage fights ensuing in the background. My boys love school; they love the routine, the freedom, learning, playing, engaging… it’s all gone. They have lost their motivation, their social connections, their individuality, and their education. If anyone should be scared of COVID or whatever virus is out, it should be me. I’m more afraid of my children losing themselves than I am of COVID. I’m more afraid of failing as a mother.. than COVID. My kids deserve the chance to learn, grow, socialize, and be free. I love our teachers and ours have been amazing. They hate this just as much as we do. I will give my boys vaccines, masks, hand sanitizer by the gallons… give my boys the education and freedom they deserve. We are not okay…

6 Year Old Webster

Remote learning started out great, she was occupied and focused in her room. I checked in on her and she told me it was gym time so I said “put shoes on and go outside to play”. She said she couldn’t, she needed to stay on Zoom and knows our WiFi doesn’t work good outside. She knows the rules of our house and can’t stomp, run or jump, out of respect for the neighbors below us, so she just sat there. I checked the screen and all the kids were just sitting, muted, staring at the screen of kids they don’t even know. The day declined from there as she grew bored. At one point she had turned down the volume. She had mentally checked out, and I can’t blame her. By the end of the day, she had so much energy built up she was literally bouncing off the walls. When school ended she ran outside and played with the neighbor until it was time to come inside and then the tantrums started. She tells me she doesn’t want to go to school tomorrow, she doesn’t want to sit alone in her bedroom all day, she was upset because she didn’t make any friends – she can’t make any friends like this. My heart broke. My social butterfly isn’t able to talk to new people and make new friends. My fashionista has no desire to get dressed, when last year she wanted a picture of every outfit she wore. She has zero interaction with her peers, only the teacher.

I understand there’s a pandemic, but these poor kids haven’t had it easy, they were just given a tiny bit of independence, having to get yourself around the school without mommy, and then it was ripped away. I guess I don’t understand how one school district has in person learning 3-4 days a week and another is fully remote with no date when hybrid may start. These kids are basically being told they’re expected to not do well with masks, social distancing, hand washing but haven’t even given them the opportunity to prove otherwise. It’s tough on teachers and they’re extremely patient, it’s tough on parents who work or have multiple children, but it’s the hardest on the kids who can’t just be kids. I hope everything gets smoother as time goes on because my child’s education and mental health are far to important for me to sit back and do nothing.

I have many more stories and will continue publishing them every day moving forward. Remote learning is abusive to children. It should not be considered an acceptable alternative to in person education. Schools must find a way to make the schools fully reopen for 100% of students. It’s not our job to figure out how to do that, it’s their job. If we don’t advocate for our own kids then who will? If you’d like to share your stories of remote learning please email me at turtleboysport@gmail.com or message me on Facebook at Clarence Woods Emerson.

I live in NH (thank God…and how about you all stop flocking up here, huh?) It’s up to the district to determine how to go about the school year. I received a survey over the summer about parent’s feeling about everything, and the results overwhelmingly said they want schools open. My son goes to a very small school, in a wealthier district that many surrounding here. We ended up getting hybrid learning. My son goes 2 days a week, plus every other Friday. I see NO point in this because the classes are split up, and the teachers end up being there every day. WHAT IS THE POINT? My son is in first grade, and they have zero meetings with their teacher on days where there is school at home. EVERYTHING is up to the parents. I’ve been looking for work, and I’m really not sure how this will work once I start working. To make it worse, his father works for his own dad, at home, where he lives with them. His mother works for the district and keeps pushing for schools to close. The days that he is with them, he barely does any school stuff, and they pile it on me. I know some communities up here have totally remote learning. I’m honestly jealous of my neighbors because their kids go full time in this town. I will be taking every measure to make sure he goes to school full time in the very very near future.

Schools are not daycares. If you can’t “make a living” because your kid can’t go to school then there is a larger problem than just COVID. Teachers deserve to be safe, just because you’re worried about $$$ doesn’t mean we have to expose ourselves to potential death. Sorry not sorry.

If that’s your position, then every teacher who refuses to go back to school, but somehow have no problem going out to protest or any other non-essential activity should be fired without opportunity to appeal.

You’re right, schools are not day cares, they are publicly funded institutions for learning, people/teachers get paid to teach.

If you care about Black Lives (which I think most everyone does so no need to tell me 100 times a day) consider that Private Schools in Massachusetts are predominately white, and they are open. This means that white people are receiving a far better education, that is how systematic racism works. I could keep going, but the way COVID is being handled is further benefiting those who are “privileged”. So keep fighting the good fight, except your fighting on the wrong side if you TRUELY care about black lives

OK, whose the largest asshole out of these thats caused this mess — parents, teachers, administration, unions, or government?

Cant speak for MA and the Culture of Cant. The cancer is too far and wide in this state. But maybe we can use NH as a template to see what happened.

In NH and SAU 16, in most municipalities the public voted for full-live classes (20% or so of munis went against). It then went to the school committee to vote, and the vote went 22-5 AGAINST opening with full live classes. So then the discussion became whether to be partially or fully remote.

The Superintendent made the call the whole district would open fully remote. Various weasel justifications, but the best one was that “not all munis were unanimous in voting for full live school, so therefore the whole district cant open for full live school”.

So voters clearly wanted full-live, and Administration pissed in their face. Administration pissed in their face because the School Board gave him cover to do so. Do you think if the citizens AND the school board would’ve voted to open, he would’ve gone against both?

Where did the teachers and union land on all of this? Same shit, “hey, we wanted to open up the schools, b-b-but….” and gave these people cover.

I tend to agree with TB, teachers didnt get into teaching to deliver it this way. That said, they could be pushing back on their union, and they’re not. So then sorry, they’re part of the problem, because you cut the checks to keep them alive and you’re passive aggressive letting it happen.

And all the union knows is the path of least resistance. Easier to go with the flow of where the Super lands then to go against him.

So what can we wean from this? — *people get the government they deserve*. Rather watch the Celtics game instead of missing one Monday night every two months? OK, 22-5 the schools don’t open and yours and your kids life is F’d. And there isnt a thing you can do about it since there are three monoliths self-reinforcing in their opinion, and you would have to go to war with all three.

While we walk happily into Marxist authoritarianism via Useful Idiots who don’t understand 10th grade science, I’ll be watching the Celtics game.

      September 24, 2020 at 8:39 pm

Doh…homeschooling is completely different from virtual/remote learning because the parents and kids are in control of it. It involves things like co-ops and homeschool groups, field trips, and since it’s one kid school is done in a couple hours rather than 6. This gives the kid more time to focus on their interests and hobbies, and mor estime to play. It is planned, with a parent staying home and focusing one-on-one in their child, so they are close. The parent can modify the plan however they need to suit their child. It doesn’t even always involve textbooks…as long as long as you teach the lessons and they can demonstrate expected knowledge/pass tests the parents can choose the materials/methods. It is not like virtual/remote learning.

My kids are allowed to go to school 2 days a week. After much protest, today was the first day they were allowed a ball a recess.

Regardless, kids are still forced to wear a mask at all times when playing soccer.

Make no mistake, all of this is due to the giant temper tantrum the dems have been going through the past 4 years. Democrats hatred for dumpy trumpy FAR exceeds their care for children, the constitution, the middle class, small business or self respect. CNN anchors are openly calling to blow the entire system up, remove the electoral college and add democrat states to the union in response to orange man bad. (D) Politicians are openly stating their intention is to corrupt and negate the Supreme Court by packing it with dems. They have no interest in balance or continuing as a republic.

Like Fuck, I’m sorry Trump constantly says stupid shit and doesn’t have a filter. The reaction from the left is so outrageous though. There’s far more going on here then what you think.

But no one thinks, AWD. Only what Facebook feeds them. And the beta males in private discussions all agree with us, yet they don’t take charge in their own houses and let their never-worked-anything-meaningful-in-their-lives housewives run the show. So, they also get the shitshow they deserve.

We also have to remember this is predominately a New England thing. Get out of the northeast and chunks of the country have been close to normal for a long time. So if we dont like the situation, we can either change it or leave it.

MA has lost electoral votes in the last two decades. Why? Because there’s a drip of people leaving the state.

    • Betty Ford
      September 24, 2020 at 5:52 pm

Yeah and lets be clear on the 40-60 model. My kids are doing the same.

Two days they’re in full school, and its sounds on the whole like normal school. Except they break the grade in half, so half the kids they never see. The other two days they’re home, they get assignments posted and have all day to work on them. My 4th and 8th grader have yet to beyond 1030am and their day is done (and yes theyve been doing the work).

The teachers are teaching 4 days a week live, as they teach to both halves. The 5th day I guess is Margarita Friday. Since its all computerized there’s nothing to grade, so I’m unclear the value they bring on that 5th day.

Boy if this whole thing doesnt expose how much slack there is in MA public education, then nothing will.

Stop relying on the dems to do it for you. Everyone wants a kid but no one wants to take care of them. You all think that its others jobs to care for your kids when it’s not! Teach your own children. There are multiple towns in NH that have schools with full in person learning (i.e. Amherst and Hudson). Same with private schools like Bishop Guertin, and yep, you guessed it. Everyone is alive and kicking. No deaths, no fevers, no hysteria. Kids are actually getting an education, and just as importantly, getting to socialize with other children and experiencing an actual childhood.

Remote learning is a raging dumpster fire. An abysmal liberal ideology that is failing flat on it’s face (just like many other liberal policies and ideologies). Anyone with an IQ above room temperature could have told you that.

Open the schools full time. Stop the nonsense. If teachers refuse to go back, fire them. Then replace them with teachers who actually care about the well being of the students.

I agree! It is child abuse!!! We are doing a great disservice to this country by withholding education and passing “remote learning” as school. We are making a whole new underclass. As a healthcare worker I never had a choice to not go to work. I never got time off or a bonus. I got to go home early once in the May because of low census, and free food sometimes. Sorry teachers but cut the shit suck it up and go back to work

Holy shit sweet tits do you want a medal or something? Big fucking deal it’s called living. Look at me I go to work everyday like the rest of you andwe figure it out. Fuck teachers it’s clear they are mostly unfit to “educate” in public schools and the last 4 decades have shown worse results with each passing class.
Cant have your cake and eat it too. Shitty teachers who should teach our kids because what else

This situation is insane. Not since the ancient South American tribes slaughtered their young, to appease their gods, has humanity seen this level of officially sanctioned child abuse.

All for a tenuous reason, a virus that DOES NOT HARM KIDS!!!!

In addition, exercise keeps the body healthy. The immune system needs exercise to stay strong, and wearing a mask is bad for this reason. Your immune system stays strong with constant daily fights against routine germs.

Sure…. you can sit at the bar. The problem is that some bars are still not allowed to open. Where I work, our liquor license is a nightclub license. (We have a kitchen but because we are a 600 person capacity live music club we fall under another category). Baker and town-to-town rules…..have decimated the industry!!!

Found the person who doesn’t have kids.

My son -hated- school before the Apocalypse. Now, he’s anxious to go back. Developmentally-speaking, remote learning is going to have a significant effect on these children, especially the younger ones.

You’re right, drastically changing the life of a child will have ZERO impact on their life, especially during their more developmental years. No kind of trauma or change effects them at a young age. Nothing to see here.

“It’s not our job to figure out how to do that, it’s their job.” Since when is it the job of school administrators to handle an epidemic. They have zero expertise in this. If Trump had taken this serious from the start instead of telling us all it was OK, this wouldn’t be a problem now.

Funny how you went from hating on public schools to now begging them to take your sick brats in.

Nice try. There’s a universe of space between “expecting teachers to deal with a pandemic” and “figure out how to do remote learning in a way that’s not a colossal screw up.”

“Funny how you went from hating on public schools to now begging them to take your sick brats in”.

Did you read any of the stories? You do realize the state’s order is to close public and private schools? This issue is a state that won’t allow kids to go to school together or in person more than a couple hours a week ANYWHERE!!!! TB is not advocating for public schools in this context just because he doesn’t want his kid to sit in the bedroom staring at a screen all day!!!!!

Hey Fuck Wad, the whole thing is borderline fake. But you can bitterly cling to your mask as you wish, you have that right. I apparently dont get the right to get my 6k of property taxes back that goes to the school and enroll my kid in a private school.

    • “Fuck That” is an ignorant douche
      September 24, 2020 at 8:07 pm

I bet that you don’t have kids, do you fuck face? Tell that to a parent right to their face(without the mask), who still has to work and teach their kid(s). You won’t because you are a colossal pussy. Just sit behind your screen and barricade yourself in your house where the CHINA VIRUS can’t get you. Try imagining yourself in someone else’s position and maybe you will become less of a douche.

It’s no easier for the older kids, and in fact, hybrid IMO is worse because there is no regimen implementation. Couple that with the fact we’ve had schools here TRY to open but then shut down again because ONE kid was testing positive although asymptomatic, and you begin to understand what a colossal clusterfuck this has become, and it’s not going to get better anytime soon.

A lot of high school kids who are fully remote are getting into trouble because of lack of ball games to attend and extracurricular activities. They miss the socializing and are not motivated. They understand that the clock is ticking away and they are missing the on some of the best memories of their lives. Pretty sad that teens want to be in school but aren’t allowed to be. Also, their school issued Chromebooks keep kicking them out of ZOOM and Google Classroom.

I appreciate and empathize with the way that school districts had to pull up in March to do something beyond the pale like 100% remote learning. But that was in March. From March to September, school districts had half a year to plan for every sort of contingency going forward – including hybrid models.

The fact that it’s October, and they still haven’t figured it out yet – at least in my school district – is monstrous. Even children who are amenable to remote learning are finding it difficult to figure out where they should be during the day, what they should be doing during each “block” of time, etc., etc. The tech systems our school district has in place feel like they were assembled piecemeal, with no thought whatsoever to workflow or top-down design. Things like schedules are changed and there are no alert systems to give notice…I mean this is basic stuff that the private sector figured out how to do in the 1990s.

I design software for a living. If I, or my team, had rolled out a new product or project like this, I, or we, would be fired summarily. I would expect to be fired, actually, because I would have deserved it.

The way “they” (school districts / administrators) bolluxed this up proves, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that there are many, many, many untalented, uncaring, and unqualified people running these school districts.

I saw on the news last week a high-school student was arrested for “trespassing” because he demanded they let him and other students inside their school. I believe their town/district was doing the hybrid model. I don’t believe it was here in MA though.

Im in software Hank and yeah, no progress in the first month we’d be gone.

No consequences for these people Hank. Nice triad of self-reinforcing cover between unions, school board, and superintendents. Voters just provide the weather and the paychecks.

I do not have kids, but reading these testimonials has given me a pit in my stomach. 6 months later and it hasn’t gotten better. Yes I agree with that teacher that said we aren’t all the same and shouldn’t be lumped into one pile. There truly are teachers that want to be back. Most have school aged kids themselves and feel the burdens of remote learning. God forbid they voice their opinions they’re scolded by the mainstream nut jobs. I pray every day there won’t be another lockdown with the colder months approaching.

TB it definitely IS child abuse. Kids need friends and sunshine and fresh air. This whole mask thing is destroying thier young lives. There may be some good remote teachers out there…But the mediocre and not so good ones are still getting paid….doing a good job or not.
