This happens every year whenever the playoffs start for High School field hockey. Somerset-Berkely played Canton tonight and won 3-2 in overtime:

You’ll notice the name Lucas. As in, he’s a dude. Playing field hockey. And he scored the game winning goal against Canton:

Lucas Crook rifled home the game-winning goal with 10:58 remaining in overtime, lifting Somerset Berkley to a 3-2 field hockey victory over visiting Canton on Wednesday and setting off a firestorm of emotions between both coaches. With the victory, top-seeded Somerset Berkley advances to Saturday’s Division 1 South Sectional finals against King Philip at Taunton High School. The time is to be determined.

“I think we were the best team today,” said a very upset Canton coach Chrissy O’Connor after the game. “I think they shouldn’t allow boys to play field hockey. It was very physical out there and how do you play against that? The officials didn’t keep control of that. “Clearly there is a difference (between boys and girls) and until the MIAA does something about it, this will continue to happen.”

It happens a lot with Lucas. He scored 3 of Somerset’s four goals in their win over Hopkinton just to make it to this game. He’s a junior now, but he made the all conference team as a freshman, scoring 24 goals in one season

And guess who Lucas’ Mommy is…..

“It was a physical game,” said an emotional SB coach Jen Crook, the mother of Lucas. “We’re not used to playing physical like that.

Yup, she’s the coach! But she’s totally not used to playing a physical game, even though she has two boys on her team, who are physically stronger and faster naturally than their female opponents.

“We have two boys on the team who have been playing since the seventh grade. I didn’t ask them to play. They just love playing the sport. What am I supposed to do?”

What are you supposed to do? It’s your son. Tell him to play soccer or football. Like a boy. It doesn’t matter if they’re allowed to do it, it’s obviously wrong. And if you as the parent can’t see that, then you’re the problem.

But honestly, the kid should know better. He’s not in 7th grade anymore. He understands how this looks. He can feel himself having the advantages he has when he plays. Yes, Mom should ultimately be the one to tell him he can’t do this anymore, but at the same time he needs to man up and stop picking on girls. Perhaps his debut on Turtleboy Sports will convince him to pick a new sport. A boy’s sport.

Under MIAA rules, schools with boys on the field hockey team are forced to move up a division when it comes to tournament play. Somerset Berkley is already in Division 1, so there is no consequence for the Raiders.

Oh look, the MIAA is proving once again to be a useless organization that doesn’t know its elbow from its ass. They ONLY exist to screw over children and steal money from schools. It’s like they didn’t think this one through at all. The rule says that if you have a boy on your team you have to move up a division. By doing so they are admitting that boys give you an advantage. But obviously this rule only exists to affect schools that are below D1, since D1 schools cannot move up a division. If the MIAA were run by smart, competent people, then they would’ve made it clear that D1 schools cannot have boys on their team, since it’s impossible for them to move up a division.

Somerset Berkley’s Kara Desjarlais opened the game with a goal 2:07 into the contest, but the Bulldogs quickly responded with 23:55 left in the half on the first of two Kaitlyn Goyetch goals to make it 1-1. The hosts took a 2-1 lead into the break when Megan Salsinha scored after a mad scramble in front of the net with 3:36 left. Salsinha’s goal was assisted by Camryn Crook. Goyetch knotted the game at 2-2 with 20:53 to play and Canton goalie Riley Brown kept the game tied by making consecutive acrobatic saves with a little more than four minutes to play.

“I thought our defense played an outstanding game,” O’Connor said.

With 10:58 left in the 15-minute, sudden-death overtime, Crook, the Raiders’ leading scorer this season, blasted a shot past Brown, sending the Raiders into the South finals.

“It’s unfortunate a game like this has to be ruined by adults at the end,” said Coach Crook. “I thought they were very disrespectful after the game, not shaking the boys’ hands.”

Wrong. I’ll tell you what’s disrespectful. Sending your son out on the field in a skirt to beat up on girls.

O’Connor disputed that fact, saying her team shook hands after the game.

“I’d love to have a conversation with her about that,” O’Connor said.

While the majority of the postgame talk revolved around the two Somerset Berkley boys (Alex Millar being the other), Jen Crook didn’t want the work of her team to go unnoticed.

“It’s not like the boys are doing all the work,” she said, “and I think this takes away from what the girls are doing.”

It’s amazing that the team that played with an obviously unfair advantage is the one whining about poor sportsmanship. If I were the coach of Canton I’d refuse to shake their hands as well. This is an absolute disgrace. Yes, I realize it happens every year. South Hadley and Dennis-Yarmouth are two schools that come to mind. But the kid and his mother should have enough common sense to realize that something is very, very wrong with this.

Here’s my question every time this debate comes up – how is letting boys play field hockey fair to all girls schools like Notre Dame Academy? They couldn’t put boys in skirts on the field if they wanted to because they don’t have any boys enrolled in the school. When the MIAA aligns divisions for soccer and cross country, they do so by the number of boys or girls enrolled in each school. Somerset has about 1,000 male and female students that they draw players from. In any other sport that would make them one of the biggest schools in the state. Canton only draws players from half their population, which obviously would mean they should be in a smaller division than Somerset. The whole thing makes zero sense.

The most insane part about this is that all the kid had to do was just SAY HE WAS A GIRL!! That’s a thing you can do right now and you get a friggin ESPY Award if you do so!! I’m not even gonna go into a tangent about that because we’ve done it a million times before. If you’re still buying into this transgender nonsense, knowing how easily it can be manipulated by men, then you’re an idiot. I have nothing more to say to you.

It’s just such a simple fix – boys play football and girls play field hockey. The end. Don’t like it? Move to Germany or New Zealand where men playing field hockey is a thing. You live in America, where men play football. Problem solved.

Actually you don’t know what they have done to me. Also I’m in the same grade, same school, same classes, and the best part is because of them my sister didn’t get a spot on the team. Not because she wasn’t good. Because they had enough players. So Ya I’m so so glad Taunton won. So glad

Have you ever had a conversation with one of the boys who plays field hockey? I didn’t think so. Does something like this happen when a girl plays football? No. People tell their kids to pursue their dreams, and why should anyone tell another child they cannot participate in something they love and excel at? If Somerset Berkeley had lost the game the story would be different.
Do you understand how ridiculous it sounds to call an athlete a girl? Meet the kid for yourself and you’ll take back everything you said. Actually, don’t. It’s definitely not worth your time because all you’re doing is writing nonsense.

This is probably the most sexist, embarrassing and shameful sports article I have ever read. To publicly try to shame these young men for pursuing a sport they obviously love is disgusting to say the least. As a former high School field hockey coach, parent of former collegiate field hockey player and community field hockey coach I have never heard, let alone read an adult love sexist comments and insinuations that are in this article. Men’s field hockey world wide is a sport many boys are exposed to and grow up playing everywhere except here in the United States. Field hockey world wide is a more competitive than soccer/football in some countries and their men’s players are celebrities and far from the pansy ass gay boys you all imply. As far as the coach whose feelings were hurt because her girls aren’t used to aggressive playing, that is your fault coach for not teaching it and instilling it in her players. Althleticly, I would match up any field hockey player against any football or soccer player anytime and anywhere and put my money on the hockey player being the fittest and most athletic. To other commenters you too should be ashamed of yourselves for the rude, crude and hateful comments you’ve made.

You complete excuses for “adults” should all be ashamed of yourself and considering this is what you’ve decided to do with your lives it really shows. Show up to one of any of our games and you will see its more than just a game for us its a whole culture so if you really want to have an argument with us show up to a game and come to the raider section and I can more than assure you that you’ll get you moneys worth and maybe some “girls” can show you what physicality looks like. Ignorant fucks. Raiders out.

The fact that people take time out of their day to bash on boys who want to play a sport they enjoy is beyond ridiculous. If Somerset Berkley was 0-20 nobody would care about the team as a whole. And notice how I said whole. They are one team composed of many individuals. So what if there are two boys playing? We try and teach girls to be tough and to fight for what they want. And Canton put everything they had into that game yesterday, but they lost to a very good team. If anything, the boys have to hold back most of the time so inconsiderate people like this don’t become hostile towards them. If the boys were to sit on the bench and not play at all this season this article wouldn’t be here and people wouldn’t be complaining. Last time I checked every single person that stepped out on that field contributed to that win. Bottom line, Somerset Berkley is a team that has skill. So yes the boys are damn good, but you can bet your ass the girls are damn good as well. Now all of you can sit back and wait to read articles of SB and their future accomplishments. Maybe then you’ll realize that SB is just made up of athletes with pure talent.

    • Tony
      November 9, 2017 at 10:56 pm

That’s your point? “If the boys sat on the bench” and didn’t play field hockey, there wouldn’t be an article about them playing field hockey?????? No shit buddy. Wtf is wrong with people?

      • M
        November 9, 2017 at 11:39 pm

People are just getting upset at the fact that the boys are good. Nobody would care if the boys sucked and were on the team. Even without both boys, SB would still win based purely off of skill.

        • Sue
          November 10, 2017 at 5:29 am

Doubt that. The boy scored the 3 points right? Not the girls. Play them again WITHOUT the boys and the other team probably will win. Let the team of girls play against another team of all girls and then if they win they have the “skills.”

My son plays select hockey ..he’s 14..some of the 14-year-olds are HUGE…they STILL have girls that play in theleague. I don’t agree..

ok when they are mites …say ages 4-1o when they all are about the same size and no checking is allowed if they dont have all girls teams..let them play with the boys..

But once puberty hits and the boys are twice the size AND you can now check? these girls are gonna get fucked up..and I have told my son not to go easy on any girl out there..don’t target a girl but if she wants to play she better be ready to get checked as hard as any other dude out there. There are girls leagues at this age no need to be there..she cant change in the same locker room as the boys either..makes it hard when the coaches want to do pregame talks or post game wrap ups that they usually do while gettng dressed and undresed..its just a stupid thing for girls to play with boys after a certain age and vice versa…

The reason why I prefer womens lacrosse over mens lacrosse is that there is no contact allowed.

In some ways I’m at a disadvantage because girls don’t have to worry about taking a stick to the balls and their is always the chance of running into a girl on her period who is possessed with retard strength!

Yes, boys should play against boys and girls should play against girls, because of the physical characteristics. Yet, the “gender neutral” crowd has created this shit-show (demanding girls play in boys sports), and now I love to sit back and laugh when a kid like Lucus gives them a taste of their own medicine. They can’t. That’s why the boys are on the team. They always score more then the girls better yet, they don’t even give the girls a chance. The boys play the whole game too. If they played a game with just the girls, CANTON would have won.

Field hockey isn’t just a girls sport in other countries. If these coaches and parents really loved the sport they would start boys teams and try to build and expand the sport. But that would require some effort. It’s much easier to let boys play on your girls team and collect wins.
