Editor’s Note: We put a poll on our last blog, asking our readers whether or not we should continue to call the protesters “hippies.” Some believe that calling these dumbasses “hippies” is insulting to real hippies. Since we are a blog of the people, by the people, and for the people, we will act as our reader’s want us to. The vote was overwhelmingly in favor of ditching that word. We will now be referring to them as “muffs” from this blog forward.
Move over Worcester muffs, you’ve got competition for biggest morons in Massachusetts. The latest contender to throne are your comrades from the lovely city of Springfield, MA:
Masslive: Authorities arrested 15 people during Tuesday afternoon’s “Black Lives Matter” protest at The X, where activists temporarily blocked traffic at the major intersection in the city’s Forest Park neighborhood.
Officers were called to the neighborhood at 2:45 p.m. to monitor a group of over 40 people involved in the protest at Sumner and Belmont avenues, Springfield police spokesman Sgt. John Delaney said.
A group of officers, led by Capt. Cheryl Clapprood, followed the activists as they made their way by car from downtown Springfield to The X, where they proceeded to try to shutdown the busy intersection.
“The police officers were on hand to make sure that the protest was orderly and calm and to make sure that the individuals were safe and conducted themselves in a peaceful manner,” Delaney said.
However, after 15 protesters locked arms and walked out into the middle of The X, blocking traffic in all directions, police took action.
First, Clapprood repeatedly ordered the protestors to leave the intersection. Then, Mayor Domenic Sarno tried his hand at getting the group back onto the sidewalk, telling them they could continue to protest safely and peacefully once they exited the intersection.
After the protesters refused to comply with the requests, officers moved in and charged the following people with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest:
- Vanessa Lynch, 23, of West Street, Northampton;
- Ashley Gadson, 24, of Wilbraham Road, Springfield;
- Shana Nunez, 22, of Beaumont Street, Springfield;
- Jozlyn M. Squaire, 21, of Newland Street, Springfield;
- Tianna Thomas, 21, of Quincy Street, Springfield;
- Frank Cincotta, 24, of Maple Street, Springfield;
- Kwamel Joselyn, 20, of Euclid Avenue, Springfield;
- George Esworthy, 67, of Ashfield Street, Shelburne Falls;
- George Aguiar, 58, of Three Rivers Road, Palmer;
- Matthew Cohen, 31, of Second Street, Turners Falls;
- Maureen Briggs-Carrington, 63, of X Street, Turners Falls;
- Catherine Woolner, 64, of Limden Avenue, Northfield;
- Emily Douglass, 30, of Second Street, Turners Falls;
- Holly Richardson, 50, of North Main Street, Florence;
- and Ellen Graves, 74, of Plateau Circle, West Springfield.
“Public safety is the main reason why these individuals were placed under arrest after being asked multiple times to get out of the middle of this very busy intersection,” Delaney said.
“If an ambulance or fire truck had to be rerouted, it could take valuable life-saving minutes away from those emergency responding vehicles,” he said. “The Springfield Police Department owed it to those citizens affected by the traffic slowdown to clear the road and make it passable in case of an emergency.”
Emergency vehicles were unable to use Sumner Avenue – a main east-west thoroughfare linking the neighborhood to I-91 and other sections of the city – during the protest, Delaney said. He characterized the avenue as “the busiest stretch of road in the City of Springfield.”
The protest also coincided with the afternoon dismissal of area schools, ultimately affecting bus schedules and parents who were trying to pick up their kids, according to police. “The protesters did not think about how they were affecting those lives,” Delaney said. “When officers were handcuffing these citizens, they expressed their desire to be arrested.”
The protest tied up city police resources, taking officers away from their regular duties, and required assistance from the Massachusetts State Police.
During the protest, some of the activists called Springfield police officers “pigs” and “racists,” oinking at them and pledging to continue their demonstrations. “What do we do when the pigs attack? Stand up! Fight back!” was one of the chants that rose up from the crowd.
Sarno also invoked the ire of the protesters, who oinked at him and called him the “pig’s mayor.”
“Have a safe trip back home,” Sarno said. “We appreciate your efforts. It’s time to move on. Let our officers patrol our streets.”
Freaking Western, MA. Nothing but mountains, hipsters, and dumpy cities. Seriously, just look at the towns these morons are coming from. We got muffs rolling in from Turner Falls (Montague), Shelburne Falls, and Northfield. Do you realize how far those places are from Springfield? Like, an hour. It’s nothing but dislocated retired hippies up there. Then you have a handful of course from Northampton – the Cambridge of the West, and your local muffs from Springfield. My question is, where the hell are the Amherst muffs? Did they not get the memo or something?
I hope Joe Petty was watching this though. Because Domenic Sarno just showed him how a real mayor handles his muffs. Unlike Worcester, which allowed these nudniks to block Lincoln Square – Worcester’s busiest intersection – for much longer than five minutes. You cannot negotiate with these people. Ed Augustus made that very clear when they rejected his compromise to have the police drop charges against the Kelley Square Fabulous Four, in exchange for a pinky swear to have no more blockades. They are criminals who clearly want to shut down civilized society and institute anarchy. They’re not legitimate. They never were legitimate. They are professional losers and protesters who think laws don’t apply to them. Arrest them all.

Abolish the police? Smash the state? Abolish prisons? Yup. Those sound like reasonable requests that we should be taking seriously. The best part is the “Liberate the hood” on the muffette’s cardboard box. Because these idiots wouldn’t last five minutes in the hood in Springfield. I guess advocating for no police is easy when you live in Shelburne Falls, which has no police force, just like most of the towns in Franklin County. You think Worcester is bad? Take a slum sociable through Springfield sometime. These muffs would get eaten alive. Even that creature in the middle’s combat boots couldn’t save them.
What the hell is that thing with the pink shoes? Is that an ice cream sweatshirt? I need one of those STAT!! Where can I find one? Oh yea, love the woman on the right too. How long you been out the game girl?
See that lady right there? That’s gotta be one of Franklin County muffs. She is every person I have ever seen from Western MA ever. Protesting is what she does. Also, there is a 150% chance she has a self-sufficient garden in her backyard that she lives off of.
This guy was probably tons of fun back in 68. Now he’s just blocking an intersection in Springfield. Tough times for the hippies. (this guy is clearly an actual former hippie, so we can call him that)

The word hippy may not fit, but muff definitely doesn’t. Got to change that real quick. Why not call them BLM’s (black lives matter) or Fucking Hashtags cause once this “movement” isn’t popular they’ll just hashtag some other shit.

Also to Turtleboy: i have spent most of my life chasing “muff”. Where im from that was more valuable than gold. Men have cried, stolen, lied and cheated for it. “…killing black for over 400 years…”, “the whole system is a bad apple”, these asshats are killing their own cause. The “black Lives Matter” was started with a just goal in mind. Equality. Its strayed so far away from that goal that its now a huge joke that nobody takes seriously. They are all now considered to be a public hazard. At some point we are going to start hearing about people running these assholes over. Its bound to happen.
Ohh and to the wack job girl holding the “Abolish prisons/Disband the police”, tell me who you will call when you are home alone and 5 guys are breaking into your house. Then after they do what they want with you and your belongings, what then? No jails means no repercussions right? So whats to stop anyone from raping or killing anyone? I would appreciate it if you could read this short message. I am trying to be kind, not a thoughtless commenter.
I understand that this is supposed to be a humor piece—I get it. But I am writing because I think you took this way too far.
I agree that some people have caused a nuisance for travel and city officials at the X. I also agree that you, by posting these comments, are being a misogynistic bully.
I am all for laughs when it comes to general humor. But I am not okay, EVER, when individuals are attacked and bullied, especially when you are pointing them out over identifying photographs.
Some uncooperative people may have deserved to be arrested, but nobody deserves that type of targeted, hurtful criticism.
If you want to criticize my region of the state, I can deal with your scrutiny of “Western Massachusetts.” Sure, there may have been some eccentric people attending the protest. You have every right to write and publish whatever you want. I am just asking respectfully that you could lay off the comments about individuals. It is not right. Imagine yourself being “highlighted” in an article like this and have no defense.
This is just another case of cyber bullying—but this time, it is not going through a small group of bullies. You are disseminating your bullying through a large medium.
I am not trying to be mean—just reasonable. We all like a good laugh, but it doesn’t have to come from the expense of targeted individuals. I just feel that if this article goes viral, someone needs to stick up for the victims of your bullying.
I completely disagree with you, and here’s why…
These individuals chose to put themselves out on public roads, to disrupt schools from getting out, and to disrupt emergency vehicles from doing their duty. (As noted in the masslive article). These are facts, not opinion.
Even then, they were offered a chance to continue their protest, to which they “oinked” at police.
These people don’t have respect. Therefore, they don’t deserve any.

I COMPLETELY agree with you about the protesting aspect… they were disruptive, and the oinking was totally disrespectful. However, I still believe that doesn’t entitle anybody the right to personally criticize people’s personal attributes (like their appearance). Their protesting habits are completely different from their appearance. Two wrongs don’t make a right.
I can understand your point. As a normal human being i wouldn’t want to be put on a blog that people read and have my appearance made fun of. If you take a look at these pictures, these are not normal human beings and the fact they go out in public like this makes it abundantly clear they do no care at all about their appearance. They want attention by doing something like this, so when they get negative attention they are just going to have to deal with it. These people deserve to be belittled, because quite frankly they are scumbags. They are making a mockery of the movement for equality. Anyone who is intelligent at this point now thinks that there really isn’t much of a problem, just a bunch of attention whores whining and complaining about situations where criminals who break the law and resist arrest get shot.
