A teacher at Stoughton High School is being suspended for 20 days without pay for rescinding a letter of recommendation for a student who was making swastikas in class and taping them to recycling bins in the school. The teacher, who is a veteran, was upset because the kid was planning on going to the teacher’s Alma Mater. And as a veteran they were obviously none too pleased with seeing a symbol for the 1930’s version of ISIS being put into places by someone they had written a glowing letter for.

It’s also perfectly understandable. Suppose the kid gets to college and keeps doing stuff like that. How’s that gonna look? Suppose he goes postal and does the unthinkable. You’re telling me the media wouldn’t find his transcripts and rip the teacher to shreds for saying nice things about him? Teachers have every right to take away a letter of recommendation if they find something out about the student they didn’t previously know.

The Stoughton Teacher’s Union is none too pleased and wanted to go to the media. But they made a HUGE mistake – they went to the Boston Globe. Rookie move. Because instead of writing an article that would focus on the outrageous 20 day suspension for a teacher who simply didn’t want their name attached to swastika boy, they turned around and made the whole story about Trump. Here’s some bits and pieces of the article. Let’s see how much of it focuses on the most important part of the story:

Screen Shot 2017-01-30 at 8.35.17 PMScreen Shot 2017-01-30 at 8.35.28 PMScreen Shot 2017-01-30 at 8.35.51 PMScreen Shot 2017-01-30 at 8.36.03 PMScreen Shot 2017-01-30 at 8.36.15 PMScreen Shot 2017-01-30 at 8.36.20 PMScreen Shot 2017-01-30 at 8.36.27 PM

That whole thing is about the Trump effect. They mention the 20 days suspension like it’s some footnote. But, ya know, a 20 day unpaid suspension for a teacher for not recommending a swastika boy is kind of, I dunno, INSANE!!!

Then again the Boston Globe and the mainstream media doesn’t give a shit about teachers. They’re too obsessed with Trump to think about anything else. You could literally pitch them a story about girl scouts building rocket ships for the homeless and they’d find a way to make it about Trump.

Look, kids are gonna do dumb things. Sometimes the dumb ones draw swastikas. It doesn’t mean they’re terrible people, but at the same time teachers are not under any sort of obligation to endorse them to an institute of higher learning. Pretty simple concept. Plus, it’s supposed to be a “learning process.” What better lesson can you teach a kid than “actions have consequences?”

Apparently all these teachers were investigated when the kid’s mother went and complained to the school that teachers were bullying the kid by talking about anti-semitism. Something tells me this would’ve been taken a little more seriously if it happened one town over in Sharon, which has a gigantic Jewish population. A little over a year ago a Sharon student was killed in Israel by an anti-semite. But I guess when teachers have a problem with swastikas in school in a town that isn’t as predominantly Jewish, it’s bullying to reprimand students who display anti-semitic symbols on school property.

Remember this story the next time some dumbass says something stupid about “teachers unions being outdated” or “greedy teachers” or something like that. THIS is why teacher’s unions exist. Because of vindictive administrators and asshole parents whose kids can do no wrong. And as you can see, they’re pretty much the weakest and most powerless union out there. I mean, one of their own just lost 1/9th of their salary and what are they doing about it? Nothing. Letting it play out in court. Know what a real union would do right now? They’d call up the teamsters and a bread truck would break down in front of the school driveway every day for the rest of the year. If it were a real union, with the alleged power that many claim the teacher’s union has, then they’d be using their collective strength to force the administration to reinstate their coworker, who did absolutely nothing wrong.

Instead when we search for the topic on Facebook we find this:

Screen Shot 2017-01-30 at 9.20.29 PM Screen Shot 2017-01-30 at 9.20.21 PM

Oh for fuck’s sake. Is there anything more meaningless than a candlelight vigil? For what? Because a dumbshit teenager made a paper swastika?? What will that accomplish? Will that get rid of Nazis? Will that help reinstate the teacher? That’s not the issue here genius!!! The issue is a teacher being unfairly attacked because they made a professional decision to rescind a letter based on new information.

According to a letter sent out by superintendent Dr. Rizzi, the Stoughton School Department will not back down on this poor teacher. This is the latest in a series of events showing the lack of respect and care for the teachers in town.

Dr. Rizzi’s letter makes such statements as: “We must work together to make everyone in this community feel safe.” Yet when two teachers tried to back up the one who was suspended, they were reprimanded in a direct contrast to what is stated as the policy. They were not allowed to work together.
The letter also states “Please be advised that the Stoughton High School is and continues to be a safe place for all students and staff.” Perhaps for students, but staff at Stoughton High School are not safe from the bullying and targeting of other staff and of students.
Just last year, two teachers in the same department went to administration at Stoughton High School for help. Both stated they were being bullied by their department head. One was so afraid to say anything, she waited until another coworker asked for help. She then felt safe in doing so. Both teachers reported multiple instances in which they were mistreated by their department head.
The result: Both teachers were not rehired. The department head remains employed by the Stoughton School Department.
A very popular, very involved teacher was so bullied by a member of her department she felt helpless. She went and asked for help many times from administration. Students witnessed the bullying from this other teacher. They were horrified and terrified of what they had seen, but reported it anyway to administration.
The result: The teacher being bullied felt she had no choice but to resign. The teacher who bullied her remains employed by the Stoughton School Department.
Another popular and extremely involved teacher was being bullied by a student. The student actively recruited other students to help him get the teacher fired. The teacher asked for help from administration and guidance. Students who witnessed the bullying reported it to administration. Students who were approached to help get the teacher fired reported it to administration.
The result: The teacher was not rehired. The student was never given a detention or a suspension and was allowed to walk across the stage at graduation free of any penalties by the Stoughton School Department.
In this day of alternative facts, the Stoughton School Department sends out reports that they are supporting their teachers, but actions speak louder than words.

Jeez, Turtleboy, way to distort the story. Let’s talk about what really happened here: a teacher pulled his recommendation when he found out the student was a Trump supporter. Sorry, snowflake, that’s not how it works. His liberal SJW ass should ABSOLUTELY be suspended.

  • Former SHS teacher
    January 31, 2017 at 6:32 pm

I used to work at Stoughton High. It is a negative, unsupportive place to work, even though there are still a lot of great students, staff, and teachers who call it their home. A few veteran teachers when I started there told me to keep my head down and then get the f#!& out of there before getting trapped for life. They were right.

My former colleague that was suspended without pay is one of a dwindling number of individuals who works there who has a big personality and says exactly what is on her mind. A lot of people feel that they can’t say much because of the fact that they haven’t been there long, or they don’t want to stick their necks out and face retaliation from the office. She did exactly the right thing by rescinding the recommendation, and I 100% support her decision to do so and also support the other teachers who received disciplinary actions.

There is a LOT of funny business that does not get dealt with properly at SHS by admin. This is the tip of the iceberg. The SHS administration does not support its teachers enough and does not like when people make waves or speak up about something that is wrong. I recently heard something from a friend who is still there that approximately 40% of the staff at SHS is not professional teacher status (“PTS”) (non-tenure, or on their first, second, or third year in the district). That means that they clean house constantly and bring in fresh, inexperienced, and cheap non- PTS blood just to save a few bucks. Most people don’t realize that public school teachers in MA are given a 3 year probationary period. They can be dismissed at the end of their contract for no reason after putting in their blood, sweat, time, money, and tears into their job and don’t even have the right to know why, and most are pretty good teachers, and have the makings to grow into a great teacher. Remember, it takes time, experience, and effective support to become a good teacher. It doesn’t just happen. Anyways, the kids of Stoughton are getting ripped off on their educations because of this practice to keep control of the staff and to save a few bucks.

I’m sure that if the teacher that was suspended were new, she would have her contract non-renewed this spring. Luckily, she has the support of the union, but I bet the admin is going to make her life hell and give her further retaliation. She will probably get the worst-behaved kids in the school in her classes next year and massive class sizes. And I wish her well!! They are trying to either give her a reason to quit or to actually be able to fire her, so they can bring on new blood that is afraid to say no or disagree, and further cycle in newbies and have a whole school full of “yes men”. I hope she completely aces whatever tests get put in front of her and that she passes with ‘exemplary’ flying colors.

If you don’t believe me about what is is like to work there, go pass your MTELs and work in that building and try it out for yourself. I can guarantee there will be several openings on Schoolspring.com this spring.

How can the general public support the teacher? Call the school? I am an alumni, it was a great school when I went there and most of the teachers had been there for a long time. Pains me to hear how it is now. I live out of state but want to help.

I also am a former teacher at SHS and someone who gave up professional status to move onto another school district. I left because of the lack of support I felt from the administration. I spent a half-decade thinking every year would be a better year, but it got worse every year that Dr. Rizzi has been superintendent. The only way that the school climate will turn around at this point is to clean house (and I don’t mean increase teacher turnover).

I just left Stoughton High School I witnessed bullying. I reported it. I saw others report it as well. Nothing was done. The principal never acted on any of the multiple reports of bullying. She just ignored it and let it continue. The teachers were not backed up when they reported it. This is not the first incident of a teacher being punished for the bullying actions of a student. I hope something is done so it will be the last.

I understand the premise of your argument, however, if the young scholar was placing the dreaded Swastikas INSIDE the trash receptacles, which party would receive the punishment?

  • A Stoughton Citizen
    January 31, 2017 at 1:10 pm

I cannot believe that they suspended the teacher. What was the punishment for the kid who made the swastika,. Don’t make everything that goes wrong in this country Trump’s fault that’s ridiculous. The parent should be ashamed instead of blaming the school. But this is very typical. The teachers get the blame for these kids actions. In my day, the kid would have been punished by the parent.. Good luck to anyone raising kids today.

    • Lets blame trump for everything!!!
      January 31, 2017 at 4:07 pm

Its so easy to blame others….when does it become the parents responsability.Blaming trump is the most absurd thing i have ever heard…lets start being more responsible as parents

Where is the ADL, Southern Law Poverty Center and other like groups to back the teacher. Not going to be heard, because they’re PC organizations. This does not fit their pretentious bill. Also, the teacher’s colleagues have sold him out, especially the principal and the town officials. Typical government, run for the hills when something goes astray.

Just remembering when I was in grammar school and we had these huge windows with shades that had long cords on them, many of which were tied into nooses. Because a kid thinks that’s a cool knot. I do believe in their heart all the teachers made what they felt to be the correct response. At least they did not ignore it.
I do think the teacher who rescinded the letter should have made the student write a paper on why a swastika is not an acceptable and the ramifications of such behavior even though I personally do not think he was trying to be malicious. Just a lesson in self reflection. I also guaranty this teacher will not be writing any more recommendations. They are not required to. The school just did a disservice to the future student body.

    • I melt snowflakes.
      January 31, 2017 at 12:11 pm

Hey snowflake the teacher has the right to do whatever they want when it comes to a letter they wrote. Oh and I’m sure the kid knows that the swastika is not an acceptable image unless he has been living in mommy and daddy’s basement playing video games. One more thing a noose is NOT a racist knot by the way, white people, Indians or should I say Native Anericans, black, and many other people have hung from them. Your argument that the swastika and noose are just as bad is completely wrong. Now if only 6million black people were hung from nooses you might have an argument.

Forgive me for asking, but doesn’t a teacher (or anyone for that matter) have the right to rescind a letter of recommendation regardless of reason? Have we really gotten to the point where a person no longer has the right to change their mind? Not to mention that this teacher had a darn good reason to change her mind.

    January 31, 2017 at 8:16 am

    2 things:

I didn’t know teachers could be suspended without pay, their salaries are contracted by the town and should be guaranteed.

People are different at 17 than 27, most kids at that age most likely don’t know what the swastika really means or the horrors of the holocaust. I say as a punishment make the student watch all the films of the death camps after they were liberated, might scar them but I think they’ll learn a good lesson
