The Clark Tournament Is A Meaningless Exhibition Because It Doesn’t Invite Any Schools With Diversity

The only thing worth reading in the Telegram and Gazette is the sports page, solely for their coverage of high school sports. Jim Wilson really has done a fantastic job with the website and the coverage of local sports over there. He’s got reporters at every big game, live tweeting it, and kids get really into it. It’s really cool.

With that said, I was reading the Hometeam section (local high school sports) online the last couple days and the headlines have all revolved around this Clark Tournament.

So I wanted to quickly rant about the Clark Tournament. This is the tournament’s 77th year, and it really should’ve ended a long time ago. People who have played in this tournament swear by it, but it’s really just an exclusive, pointless tournament for town schools so they don’t have to get bullied by the city and catholic schools. Here’s a list of schools that can go:

Gee whiz, what’s the common denominator between all those schools? I can’t put my finger on it because as you know, Turtleboy is color blind. But it’s just kind of mind boggling that Clark University, which is easily the most liberal school in Worcester and was basically ground zero for the black lives matter protests, is cool with this exclusive tournament that essentially bans diverse high schools.

The whole point of the tournament when it started 77 years ago was to give exposure to some of the more rural schools. So if that’s the case, then how come Tantasqua isn’t invited? Because Wales and Brimfield seem pretty rural to me. And they’ve got a smaller population than at least 4 of those schools listed above. And how bout Algonquin? Wachusett? Shrewsbury? Too urban?

Some coaches will tell you that winning the Clark Tournament means more to the team than winning the Districts, which is probably the most small-town, loser mentality thing I’ve ever heard. The Clark Tournament is nothing more than an exhibition. It’s a way for them to make rural schools feel special while they’re swimming in cash from gate receipts. Because they make a LOT of money for all these games. And all of that money goes right into the pockets of Clark University. And they do so by marketing this tournament like it actually matters. It doesn’t.

The goal of any high school sports team is to win the State Championship. To do that you have to first win the District Championship. That’s the only thing that matters. If you won a tournament that doesn’t have Holy Name, St. John’s, and Doherty in it, then you didn’t really do that much.

This year is a little different, because for the first time in a while most of the city schools aren’t very good. That’s what would make it so much better if city schools were in it. Bartlett, Oxford, Sutton. These schools could all play with the likes of Fitchburg, Leominster, and any city school this year. But we’ll never get to see it because the directors still think it’s 1939.

So basically my biggest beef is with Clark being a bunch of hypocrites. They are a tax exempt for profit organization that makes money off of an exclusive tournament that specifically excludes schools with high minority populations. The fact that Clarks’ social justice warrior professors are just cool with this proves once again how much frauds they truly are.

It’s a shame turtleboy that you’re not old enough to remember when high school basketball in the city ruled. Ask anyone that attended one of the seven parochial high schools in the city about the annual New England Catholic High School tournament held each year in Lawrence. Worcester schools annually held their own against some of the best in New England. But of course, it wasn’t a state title they could win. By the way the seven schools; Holy Name, St. Peter’s, St. Mary’s, St. Stephen’s, Scared Heart, St. John’s Prep. and Assumption Prep. St. John’s was on Temple St. in the city and they officially went by St. John’s Prep.

. And how bout Algonquin? Wachusett? Shrewsbury? Check your “facts”. All of these school have participated in the tournament. By the way, you do know that the city school s have their own February tournament. Holy Name, St Peter-Marian, Doherty, North, South, Burncoat, Voke-Tech and Main-South Charter. Be sure to let the winner know that it doesn’t really matter.

Yeah, I went to Quaboag in the 90s and we had an African-American classmate so I’m not sure where you’re coming from, calling us “not diverse.”

But I don’t see the problem with a tournament for small schools…not sure the makeup of the student body matters in this case.

Terrible article….. This tournament was created to give the schools you mentioned an opportunity to play on such a big stage. The inter-high and higher populated schools have their own tournaments they’ve participated in over the years and continue to play in. Diversity has literally nothing to do with it. Good try though.
