As soon as Kirk and Callahan started exposing disgraced Boston Globe columnist Kevin Cullen’s many documented lies, the first thing I said was they’re gonna do two things to spin this:

  • Frame this as a right wing attack. Because by framing this as a right-left thing they can distract from the real issue at hand – Kevin Cullen is a serial liar.
  • I knew they’d also try to turn this into a “WEEI is just trying to get back at the Globe” thing as well. Which is exactly what it is, and it doesn’t really matter. The truth is the truth. The messenger of the truth does not matter, nor does the messenger’s motives.

And right on cue on Saturday…..

Yup. The Globe allowed their suspended columnist to speak at a panel of journalists, and he framed the investigation into his obvious lies as an “attack from the right.” His boss at the Irish Times, Fintan O’Toole, claimed that investigating made up stories from a respected newspaper is “delegitimizing of public service journalism.” In other words, he’s protecting Kevin Cullen.

For the record, Kevin Cullen is deserving of this. He’s not some quiet guy that lied repeatedly about the Boston Marathon. He’s been outspoken against WEEI and tried to act like he’s above them. He participated in the harassment campaign of WEEI advertisers, in which the Globe labeled the station as racist without providing any sort of proof of these accusations:

He passive-aggressively called out everyone at the station who isn’t an outspoken left leaning host, by accusing them of “open racism”:

He’s defended his coworker Bryan Marquard, a man who was once arrested for masturbating in front of a strange woman’s doorway.

But since he says all the right things, regurgitates all the “right” talking points, and checks his white privilege….

He’s protected at the Globe. Even though it’s undeniable that he made many things up in just his recent columns alone. God knows what you’ll find if you go back 30 years

And right on cue the collection of washed up journalists who get paid to talk about other journalists on “Beat the Press” did exactly what we knew they would do:

“The tone of their criticism was so gleeful.”

Why wouldn’t it be gleeful? He attacked their livelihoods by going after their advertisers. He called them one of the most damaging things you can call someone in 2018 – racist.

Why wouldn’t they be gleeful? Of course if Howie Carr did this, every single fraud on that board would be just as gleeful as Kirk and Callahan are by exposing this fraud.

And they’re actually trying to say that when Kevin Cullen went on HBO and talked about how when he claimed he heard Krystel Campbell’s “death wail” he was referring to when he watched the tape at Jafar’s trial:

“WEEI edited out the part where he said he heard it on tape.”

Anyone listening to that can CLEARLY tell that his goal was to make you think he was there. Either way, some other things he’s written and said have been much more cut and dry:

  • He says he knows Bill Richard personally from his “activism” in Dorchester, which was completely made up since Bill Richard was never a well known activist.
  • He claims he saw Bill Richard finish the marathon, and Martin Richard run out and hug his father right before being blown up by the bomb. Except Bill Richard never ran the marathon that day and Martin Richard would never have been able to run out onto the course the finish line.
  • He claims he saw an older runner in pink socks get knocked to the ground by a photographer. In reality that man, who made the front page of sports illustrated, was knocked to the ground by the sound of the bomb itself.
  • He claims that his “friend” Sean O’Brien, a Boston firefighter, carried Jane Richard from the blast and then went back to look for her leg because he didn’t realize until AFTER he put her down that she had lost it. Except that’s not believable, Sean O’Brien says that he’s not friends with Cullen, and the firefighter who really did this was Lynn firefighter Matt Patterson.
  • He claims that he has “second hand PTSD” from talking to so many survivors, which made him unable to eat, begin to start drinking again, and frequently led to spontaneous outbursts of crying. We can’t prove that he does’t cry a lot, or that his tears didn’t actually smudge his notepad, but we know for a fact that there’s no such thing as PTSD.

I implore you, if you haven’t read Kirk Minihane’s latest article for WEEI about Kevin Cullen, read it here. It’s one of the best written and fair assessments you’ll ever read.

When I did read him, the stories almost always struck me as too clean. It all tied together in a way that seemed unrealistic. There were characters with no last names, dialogue that seemed better served in a Dennis Lehane novel, and lots and lots of firefighters, cops and bartenders who knew Cullen well, were his buddies. This was always a theme — Cullen was one of them, one of the good guys.

Also this: Cullen cast himself as a tough guy, not afraid to fight for the truth. In his world, in his mind, the politicians hated him, the corporations hated him, he was on our side against the system.

Another Cullen staple is the idea that the government is against him, his work is so relevant and biting that someone from the AG’s office would attempt to bar him from entering a press conference. Third, the friend coming in and saving the day, but at the same time letting us know what a hard-ass Cullen is.

Kirk found an even more insane column by Cullen written just days before his recent column where he claimed “Janey” Richard waved and smiled at home before he broke down crying in the Dorchester Post parking lot:

“Years ago, when Ronald Reagan was still president, and I still had black hair, I showed up at a press conference at the attorney general’s office near the State House.

“As I was about to enter the room where all the cameras were lined up, some guy barred me at the door.

“‘Too late,’ he said, not looking me in the eye. ‘You’re too late.’

“I looked over his shoulder. Reporters were milling around. No one was at the podium.

“‘But it hasn’t even started,’ I told the guy.

“He shook his head. Folded his arms.

“Now, I was born at night but I wasn’t born in the dark. I knew what was going on. A few days earlier, I had written a story about some screw-up at the AG’s office. It wasn’t even that big of a deal. The story ran inside the paper.

“But some flunky in the AG’s office decided to do to me what Seamus the Irish Setter used to do to the roof of Mitt Romney’s car.

Across the room, I saw Charlie Austin watching the whole thing. Charlie worked for Channel 4, and I knew him pretty well from the street. He was a good guy. A real reporter.

“So Charlie comes across the room and confronts the jerk from the AG’s office and asks what the problem is.

“The jerk from the AG’s office starts fumbling some lame excuse about me being too late to get in and Charlie starts remonstrating. The jerk from the AG’s office said something about me always being late and screwing stuff up and asking stupid questions.

“‘Yeah,’ Charlie goes, ‘we know Kevin’s an [expletive], but he’s our [expletive].’

“Those, apparently, were the magic words. Because the jerk from the AG’s office just stepped aside and I walked in, high-fiving Charlie as I passed and Charlie continued to give the jerk from the AG’s office the evil eye.”

You gotta be kidding me. NONE OF THAT ACTUALLY HAPPENED!!!

“I knew him pretty well from the street.”

The street? What street are you talking about? You’re a columnist. You’re not even a reporter. You don’t respond to fires or shootings on the “streets” You write fantasy twice a week about things that have already happened. You write these columns at the office, not “in the streets.” This is just him trying to push this image of himself an old school Boston kid, who grew up playing stickball against the rival Italian kids from Hyde Park. He’s seen so much shit over the years that he drinks to dull the pain. He’s a real man of the people, not some punk kid right out of journalism school!

Meanwhile, he’s taking the death of a guy he probably casually knew and once again using his demise as a way to insert himself into a story that has nothing to do with him. It’s all he knows how to do. This is the image Kevin Cullen wants you to imagine when you think about him:

There he is. Just an old school Boston blue collar guy drinking a pint of Guiness down at Foley’s with a couple old timers doing the crossword puzzle. His ancestors weren’t Boston brahmins. They were working class immigrants who came over here, worked in the mills, and taught him how to be street tough! He don’t need no stinkin’ computer. He’s got a typewriter in his car, buried under fast food wrappers because he’s always eating on the run, trying to be at every big story before it happens.

I’m honestly gonna start going back over his columns because I’m genuinely curious now to see just how much he’s made up. Every single person he writes about is someone he’s “known for about 20 years”

Mikey, not Mike. They’re good friends. From the streets of course.

Here’s the worst part that I’ve been saying since day one – Kevin Cullen isn’t going to lose his job. He might have if the rest of the MSM actually did their job and investigated him like Minihane was doing. But the USELESS Boston Herald has been silent, which explains why they’re going out of business. Instead they’ll be able to dismiss this as a one time lapse on the part of a distinguished and loved blue blooded Boston guy, and paint him as the victim of a right wing attack. The question is, when he returns will he still be telling these tall tales? Or will he have finally learned his lesson?

Cryin’ Cullen did such a poor job! Very obvious LIES in all his stories, yet MSM will protect him! So sad and disgraceful.

The “Hobson’s Choice” faced when the first responder found both a young girl and BOY with an amputated leg. Anyone ever heard of a young boy losing a leg in the Marathon Bombing? How did that obvious lie get past the editors? This looks bad for the entire Globe.

I was all about this article until it stated that it’s a fact that PTSD is not real. You are dead wrong on that.

It’s obvious from the context he meant “secondary PTSD” isn’t real, and just omitted the word accidentally. Happens a lot, it’s up to you to think through the sentence.

      April 24, 2018 at 8:32 pm

31 bravo. Judging by the name we are thankful for your service. It does seem clear that TB meant to indicate that “secondhand PTSD” …doesn’t exist. This is judged by prior TB articles and this seems to be an oversight, although I thought the same thing at first blush and first reading.

It is interesting that the DSM-V distinguishes between actual trauma and that which is witnessed via video for example (as in the red faced liars case). What he claims to be suffering from is more accurately compassion fatigue and in order to remotely be diagnosed with actual PTSD he would need to meet very specific requirements since he was not present and may only have “Witnessed” (more likely heard and viewed via video) any resultant trauma as a ‘spectator’ at best. Cullen seems to be stolen valor on full display.

TB, those with prior or current service would likely appreciate a correction of your language choice for clairification.

My #MeToo moment was when I was raped in a men’s room at a Chinatown hotel. I’ll never forget last week. It was so beautiful and degrading, it brought a tear to my eye. I wept like a little girl when that stranger pushed his swollen member inside me… filling me to the brim with abusive love… He let out a wail of pleasure that went right through me, but for real this time. It brought back memories of the week before in P-Town when me and Mikey and Pauly and Jonesy and Tyler-y went cruising and got on our knees to service the bears in the gay motorcycle club. I feel like calling Yvonne and Shirley and taking them shopping. When it hurts this good, all I can say is… #MeToo.

The tearing down of cullen is great, enjoyed kirk shredding him last week and yesterday. But, I’m waiting for the takedown of shirley leung. Someone’s gotta do it. I know she is of protected status and eei can’t do it because it would look racist but that cunt needs to be exposed for being a fraud.

Turtle boy still clinging to the idea that Cullen said he was there when Krystle Campbell died. That’s pretty shitty. I didn’t see that video but I’ve seen plenty of videos from the marathon that punched me in the gut and made me cry. Twisting your original error that he said he was there into your new take that that was what he really wanted us to think only compounds your error. You aren’t defending the deceased’ honor at all. You’re just making things worse.

Now that you’re going to be fired, you can get together with Shirley Lungclam and talk about boys and giggle, and of course you now have plenty more time to suck off other homos at the Ramrod.

TB- admit you made a mistake. Minihan did, you probably heard it. Cullen should still be fired. But not for that bit about Krystle Campbell. You are as bad as him if you go around spouting off twisted facts. Be the bigger man.

Years ago at work we used to call them “Donkey pictures”.

I had a boss, nice guy, knew his stuff. He was in a charge of someone that couldn’t get a job done. Granted it was a very hard job, ATM machine transactions interfaced into a banking system that was never meant to handle ATMs, but this project dragged on for years. At the same time, he’d sling shit at everyone else and would get away with it.

The boss retires. Within 2 months this guy who couldn’t get it done also retired. We figured it was “Donkey pictures”. After he leaves, we basically toss out a 3+ years of uncompleted work. The job was started over from scratch. Completed withing the year.

He turns every story into one of those longwinded exaggerated tall tales told by old guys to each other at the bar. Every story is bullshit so every story flies, the older they get the crazier the storys become. One day your stories dont make any sense and u get put in a home. Seems like this guy was busted riiight before the kids started shopping nursing homes. Cant wait to see what comes up when people start digging, and really cant wait for people to find what the paper found first and attempted to hide. This has great potential, i just hope it dont get “massachusettsed”.
