The weekly Tour de Turtle bone ride series continued this week as we explored the towns and cities of northern Worcester and Middlesex County. Join us as we rank the crapability of the following nine places we visited in order: Leominster, Lunenburg, Shirley, Ayer, Groton, Pepperell, Townsend, Ashby, Fitchburg.

1. Lunenburg

12696627_1680981548851788_1659211344_o

Honestly, we didn’t think going into this that Lunenburg would get the top spot. Just the name itself sounds kind of dumpy. But seriously, the town is fantastic. Wherever you drive it’s pretty much as pleasant as you get.

12699078_1680981458851797_795490547_o

It’s got a lot of rural areas so you don’t have to live directly next door to some dooshnozzle neighbor

12696751_1680981542185122_1476423162_o

And the center of town is picturesque

12695468_1680981495518460_1033893327_o

We had no idea Lunenburg was this nice.

How bout this neighborhood? Anyone recognize this land?

12736884_1680981508851792_553811383_o

It’s nice looking and all, but I almost wanted to cry driving through it. Because here on this very land some 20 odd years ago, the Turtleboy family was having a whale of a time where these nice looking condos now sit.

It’s depressing to realize that Turtleboy Jr. will never experience the joy of seeing this sign in Leominster:

d93f8f8876ae261c75820f1e8fd23467

He will never experience the terror of his first roller coaster experience looking like this:

390597671_1723586e9f_b

ne-whalom-comet_reflection

I don’t know why Whalom Park went out of business. Maybe it’s because it was named after a whale but yet for some reason their mascot was a bear with a blond afro wearing a vest and a leprechaun hat.

WhalomParkDVDOrder~~element51

All I know is, these are two of the saddest images these eyes have ever seen.

Not the turtle!!!

Oh well, if Lunenburg were like the majority of towns in this state, they’d just let Whalom Park sit there, rot, destroy property value, and become a junkie’s paradise. But instead they bulldozed over it and turned it into a yuppie factory. Nevertheless, the legend of Whalom Park lives on.

2. Groton

12696715_1680985098851433_251365245_o

If your town wins state championships in soccer it means one of two things. Either you’re a wealthy, liberal town filled with people who don’t want their kids playing a blue collar sport like football. Or you’re living in Worcester and your team is being carried by Ghanian, Albanian, Polish, and Colombian immigrants. Groton is the former. Plenty of nice digs in G-Town

12695521_1680985138851429_1081325454_o

Downtown does kind of have an older feel to it, but it’s not like Warren or Spencer old. It’s actually quite lovely.

12696766_1680985158851427_1798343696_o

There’s no bad parts of town or anything like that. Sure you get some of this once in a while

12696858_1680985112184765_1836560596_o

And you gotta watch out for runaway tractors

12722335_1680985115518098_1466058550_o

But all in all Groton is a nice little town.

3. Leominster

12597109_1680980862185190_1460085282_o

A pet peeve of mind is when people from Leominster try to act like hardos. As if Leominster is the hood or something. It’s not. It’s just an overgrown suburb that borders Fitchburg. Granted there is no shortage of abandoned factories in Leominster

12674745_1680980765518533_1361330299_o

12675186_1680980812185195_1835653589_o

Or run down vacant buildings

12656014_1680980805518529_1576259090_o

12736731_1680980795518530_835030617_o

Or random guys walking down the street talking to themselves

12699189_1680980755518534_1960424876_o

Or gypsies

12698956_1680980798851863_1383978800_o

But some people act like Mechanic Street (which is the Leominster equivalent of Main South) is this place that hardens you up and turns you into a bad ass. It’s really not that bad.

12695495_1680980785518531_74001453_o

12675154_1680980802185196_1442700527_o

The downtown is bustling

12722558_1680980822185194_404758877_o

Some of the abandoned factories have been converted into YMCA’s

12696622_1680980818851861_2052400288_o

This is what happens when your city is run by an Italian guy. This is how Leominster doesn’t turn into Fitchburg. Turtleboy would have zero problem settling down in Leominster. First of all, Turtleboy Jr. is gonna be a football star, and Leominster is always good at football. I mean, there’s families in Lunenburg who have literally spray painted racial slurs on their own home in order to get their 1/4 black sons onto the Leominster football team. Plus it’s right off Route 2 and I-190 and there are TONS of neighborhoods that look like this:

12696371_1680980842185192_1969200010_o

12736855_1680980855518524_427078758_o

Everyone has their own taste, but to me, this is what the American dream looks like. This is the type of neighborhood you’re supposed to ultimately wanna move to.

4. Townsend

12696745_1680987208851222_903711406_o

Townsend is one of the most forgettable places we’ve been to. That’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s just not that good either. It’s basically the same thing as Pepperell except with less trailer parks. It’s essentially one main road

12675232_1680987275517882_979137420_o

that everyone lives on

12736695_1680987225517887_1867666421_o

12674748_1680987205517889_12871332_o

Downtown is a whole lot of what it is

12696882_1680987235517886_649123698_o

There’s not really a lot of neighborhoods, just random streets with not much going on

12669216_1680987215517888_849428072_o

12736968_1680987238851219_1010981031_o

12736568_1680987272184549_1238935114_o

12695591_1680987245517885_1742877298_o

12695302_1680987242184552_2009880683_o

There’s a lot of fine dining, such as Cliff’s Cafe

12674749_1680987212184555_1108180595_o

And there are some newer developments

10574648_1680987265517883_1121151507_o

And safe neighborhoods where the kids can frolic

12499308_1680987248851218_533846591_o

Screen Shot 2015-12-28 at 1.20.12 PM

12699025_1680987262184550_298141295_o
But it’s also up on the New Hampshire border, and there’s pretty much nothing to do there. It’s not a bad place, but the Turtleboy family needs entertainment and Townsend is just too boring.

Screen Shot 2015-12-01 at 10.29.56 AM

5. Pepperell

12699040_1680986282184648_418481344_o

First of all, Pepperell is a pain in the ass to get to. Secondly, the whole town is just a double yellow lined road that leads you nowhere.

12636890_1680986232184653_1684889371_o

12699182_1680986205517989_101421415_o

Usually we look for neighborhoods in these towns, but Pepperell doesn’t really seem to have that many. It’s just a collection of trailer parks

12737038_1680986218851321_1883613955_o

Lone trailers

12736678_1680986242184652_286080163_o

Streets with no sidewalks

12698980_1680986185517991_41201697_o

12736699_1680986192184657_1015691321_o

And the occasional new developments on busy roads.

12695376_1680986268851316_1846464694_o

Other than that Pepperell is basically a bunch of this:

12696873_1680986212184655_1075720298_o

I can safely say that this is probably the last time Turtleboy will ever step foot in Pepperell.

6. Ashby

12698831_1680988872184389_2094396749_o

Here’s some of Turtleboy’s beefs with Ashby. First of all, it’s one of the oldest looking towns we’ve ever seen. If you live in Ashby you must feel like every day is another terrible field trip to Old Sturbridge Village.

12699166_1680988812184395_1405754716_o

12695125_1680988472184429_1378145350_o

12722488_1680988605517749_1743470530_o

12674743_1680988708851072_300630031_o

Secondly, it’s in the absolute middle of nowhere. This is where people from Fitchburg go to dump a body.

12695301_1680988845517725_319646325_o

Thirdly, I’ve seen better roads in Heath and Colrain.

12675011_1680988452184431_1679148764_o

12737047_1680988468851096_135152913_o

Fourthly, this is what there is to do downtown.

12737023_1680988508851092_1087291272_o

12695319_1680988552184421_181253922_o

Fifthly, this is what they have to offer for restaurants in Ashby.

12699308_1680988782184398_214551458_o

12722297_1680988822184394_1567684243_o

So as you can see, if you’re hungry, you have to go to Fitchburg. What’s the point of living in a nice town if your daily routine involves going to Fitchburg? Because there are a lot of really nice homes in Ashby.

12696863_1680988455517764_572411863_o

12736655_1680988442184432_372518296_o

12736506_1680988438851099_1380479096_o

But when the closest form of civilization is Fitchburg….what are you supposed to do with that?

Screen Shot 2015-12-01 at 10.10.28 AM

7. Ayer

12695604_1680984078851535_1684480798_o

This is Ayer in a nutshell:

12695252_1680984028851540_1538213643_o

Ayer is where you move to if you’re from Fitchburg and you’re trying to move up in the world.

12736949_1680984038851539_902818320_o

The motto of Ayer has to be, “At least we’re not in the ghetto.

12695186_1680984045518205_63034289_o

Because it’s a fine town, it’s just  whole lot of what it is:

12696743_1680983968851546_1612317644_o

12696557_1680983992184877_685959692_o

Screen Shot 2015-11-11 at 10.29.52 AM

12695381_1680984035518206_1219120725_o

12736974_1680984042184872_539812732_o
12722203_1680984052184871_274718183_o

12737039_1680984068851536_827341216_o

I mean, what’s up with the Caza Manor hotel?

12325643_1680984002184876_1396414238_o

It looks like a place where corrupt state representatives go to get blowjobs.

Ayer, Shirley, and Harvard all have this part of town called Devens, which had a military base in it until 1996. After that it was kind of built into a little village. It’s easily the nicest part of town.

12736652_1680984018851541_1961423916_o

12736842_1680984058851537_221798063_o

Consequently the people of Devens looked to form their own town. We’re not that familiar with the politics up there, but we know that the independence vote failed. It passed in the Ayer and Shirley parts of Devens, but not Harvard. Not sure why, but I know that Harvard is a wicked nice town, and I’m assuming that people who live in the Ayer and Shirley part of Devens couldn’t wait to GTFO, while the Harvard people were like….nah, we’re all set.

8. Shirley

12736720_1680982855518324_1404263427_o

There’s a reason they warehouse the most dangerous criminals in Shirley. Because if they escape they’ll think the apocalypse happened and they’ll run back to jail. The first thing that stands out about this town is the downtown. For some strange reason someone thought it would be wise to put train tracks smack dab in the middle of town that run parallel to Main Street:

12695182_1680982832184993_678305100_o

12736592_1680982828851660_1099495889_o

12737070_1680982812184995_439397826_o

12696638_1680982788851664_1641421064_o

It’s generally a rule of thumb that wherever the train tracks are in your town, that’s gonna be the place where drugs are sold. In Worcester we’ve got Cantebury Street. In Shirley they have downtown.

You just kind of get the feeling that you’re in a bootleg town. A lot of the places we’ve seen have Ford or Toyota dealerships. Not Shirley. Shirley has Mohawk Motors:

12695294_1680982845518325_1404310060_o

There’s just a lot of random stuff around town that looks like this:

12696878_1680982848851658_125409898_o

I mean, don’t get me wrong, there’s some nice looking areas:

12698754_1680982835518326_1274072278_o

12736793_1680982805518329_502570849_o

But there’s also a lot of this going on:

12722702_1680982802184996_972284003_o

I mean, it’s certainly not ghetto or anything like that. But when you drive around town, its just seems like a place that isn’t very much fun at all.

12698993_1680982792184997_855256693_o

9. Fitchburg

12674800_1680990305517579_1715714745_o

What else? It’s hilly. It’s dumpy. It’s a great place to buy drugs. It’s where dreams go to die.  It’s the dirty Burg in all it’s majesty. When people think of Fitchburg they usually think of something like this:

12696544_1680990202184256_1468870980_o

And believe me, there is plenty of that to go around. I mean, what’s not to like about this?

12696313_1680989988850944_795104211_o

or this

12736484_1680990032184273_506012129_o

and this is lovely

12722708_1680989955517614_802617025_o

12736661_1680989938850949_1823417780_o

And here is one of the many glorious vacant buildings.

12695394_1680989922184284_904427170_o

You gotta love how in Fitchburg even the streetlights look like they’re dying. Seriously, those things look like sad tulips in November.

There are plenty of vacant buildings for local vagrants to procreate in

12736961_1680990065517603_521279734_o

The front porches are covered with satellite dishes, old appliances, and unfulfilled New Years resolutions:

12736752_1680990085517601_913329226_o

The main roads are littered with boarded up places where people used to live back when Fitchburg was a place where you didn’t mind living.

12736922_1680990125517597_118183508_o

There is some great property cemetery-front property, but it’s best to use tarps rather than curtains.

12736641_1680990192184257_107236408_o

So like we said, these are generally the type of sights we associated with the dirty Burg. But there’s actually tons of Fitchburg that looks like this:

12695537_1680990218850921_1992896408_o

12698792_1680990288850914_760972816_o

12722538_1680990252184251_1719841236_o

Which of course are ideal for a Fitchburg bone ride.

And there’s lots of nice homes up near Ashby and Ashburnham and Westminster that will make you say, “We’re still in Fitchburg??!!”

12695367_1680990238850919_652959846_o

Homes like this are a million times cheaper than they would be in Lunenburg or Groton. Gee whiz, can’t imagine why.

Anyway, we hope you enjoyed our weekly segment. Join us next week as we explore new crevices of the Bay State. Where should we go next?

Imma keep saying it. If there’s a Rhode Island Turtleboy, we need a Maine Turtleboy! So much material up there! Also please start describing dooshnozzles as muffs again. Pretty sure every time this blog uses the term muff, a turtle gets its shell… or a normal, upstanding citizen moves to Worcester

Agreed. And I still want to see the one on Southern Woo County – Auburn, Oxford, Dudley, Southbridge, Sturbridge, Douglas, Charlton, and of course Webdah.

And you can throw Thompson, CT on there too.

Spot on. I lived in Fitchburg for a while. Even though it was a nice section, I’m glad I moved. I don’t go around bragging about living in Fitchburg, because soon as you say, ” I am from Fitchburg” everyone thinks you’re either on welfare, you do drugs or both.

May I say, my lovely Fitchburg did not disappoint. You are absolutely correct that there are a lot of nice houses and some old farmland that makes you think you crossed over into the next town, but most of those dumpy pics you took were right near Main Street. Why wouldn’t people think Fitchburg was dumpy if that is what we have at the face of town. Lol

Jesus H. Christ if I ever had to live in Ayer I would be permanent fixture in that liquor store in the center of town…

Ok TBS, time for the double bone or bong rip ride: the savage hinterlands of Bristol County. Fall River, New Beige, Somerset, Swansea, Dartmouth. Maybe dip over the county line to Brockton, Taunton, Raynham.

A place where “dreams go to die”? They are stillborn in these shitholes.
