Missouri transgender teen Lila Perry began to feel like a girl when she was 13 and started appearing as one in school this year when classes began in August.
The 17-year-old Hillsboro High School senior wears skirts, makeup and a long wig styled with bobby pins. She even started using the girls’ locker room to change for gym class, despite the school’s offer of a single-occupancy restroom.
“I am a girl. I am not going to be pushed away to another bathroom,” she told CNN affiliate KPLR. “It wasn’t too long ago white people were saying, ‘I don’t feel comfortable sharing a bathroom with a black person,’ and history repeats itself.”
In less than two weeks, however, it became clear she was not welcome in the locker room.
Because Perry has male anatomy, many students simply see her as a boy in a wig changing in the girls’ locker room — and that makes them uncomfortable. They whispered about her in hallways, complained to faculty and told their parents, who brought it up at the school board meeting on August 27.
In a petition read aloud, one parent asked the board to stop extending privileges to “confused teenagers who want to be something they are not sexually” at other students’ expense. Another parent, insinuating that the board was avoiding liability, asked which side it would support if he sues them for violating his right to “parent” as he chooses.
When they didn’t get the response they had hoped for, a group of students organized a walkout Monday with their parents’ support. By then, Perry had already dropped gym class, fearing for her safety, her friend Skyla Thompson said. Perry declined to speak to CNN for this story.
Students can use single occupancy bathrooms or unisex faculty bathrooms if they want, but it should be a choice, not a directive, said Alison Gill, senior legislative counsel for the Human Rights Campaign. Forcing students to use different bathrooms further stigmatizes them, placing them at greater risk for harassment. Logistically, depending on its location, it can also be inconvenient.
I know this is a sensitive issue and all, but here at Turtleboy Sports we don’t care if you’re offended. And I’m sorry, but this is a pretty simple situation – a human being with a penis wants to change in the girl’s locker room and that can’t happen. It’s PC on steroids.
Ever since transgender became the new cause celebre for social justice warriors, we’ve been told that gender and sex are different. Sex is determined by whether or not you possess a dinky-doodle. Gender is a social construct that is in your brain. Sure, whatever you say. It doesn’t matter because bathrooms and locker rooms are separated by gender, not sex. If this kid gets to use the girls locker room then everyone should get to. There’s literally no point of having boys and girls locker rooms. Because the whole purpose of segregating bathrooms is so that girls aren’t forced to look at schlongs and boys don’t get to look at hoo-hoos.
What pisses me off is that the school district has gone out of their way to make a “gender neutral” bathroom, that’s basically a private changing room for this student, but it’s still not good enough. Because at this point this is only about making a point. You know what that tells me? This kid is just being an asshole.
SJW’s everywhere will tell you that this is about not being stigmatized. Newsflash – it’s a teenager with an Adam’s apple, a wig, and a deep voice who wears skirts to school. They were stigmatized a long time ago.
The most insane part about all of this is that the rights of girls in that locker room who feel uncomfortable are being completely ignored because of the PC police. I would imagine it’s hard enough for some teenage girls to feel comfortable changing in a locker room full of other teenage girls, what with the adverse effects of puberty and all. But who gives a shit about them right? After all, we live in a world where a 65 year old man in a dress, who just committed manslaughter, gets an award for bravery.
Look, this isn’t the same thing as gay rights or civil rights or anything like that, so spare me the false equivalencies. Gay people and black people wanted to break down barriers that segregated them from everyone else. But the entire purpose of having boys and girls bathrooms is to segregate. And the basis of that segregation is whether or not you have the ability to use a urinal, which this student does.
