Masslive continues to be one of the trashiest news outlets that has ever existed:

Oh look, they’re intentionally putting out misleading information for the sole purpose of getting people to turn on their children’s teachers. This is just what the mainstream media does. People shit on Turtleboy because our opinions are “controversial.” But a big difference between Turtleboy and Masslive is that we don’t try to hide what we’re doing. We just come out and tell you how we feel about something. Masslive throws a burning match on a ball of gasoline and then sits back and watches as people argue over who started the fire.

From the article:

Teacher salaries vary greatly across Massachusetts, from the top paying district with an average salary of more than $100,000 to one that pays less than $44,000 a year. Massachusetts is the fifth highest paying state for public school teachers at $76,442 on average in 2016, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Public schools in Carlisle, a town northwest of Boston, tops the list. The district paid its 54 full-time equivalent teachers a total of $5,423,187 – an average salary of $100,803. Worthington, a tiny community in Hampshire County, had the lowest average statewide. The average salary at the community’s elementary school was $43,853, according to the most recent salary data available.

First of all, these numbers are intentionally misleading. Veteran teachers get paid more. For all we know Carlisle has an abnormal amount of veteran teachers. We can’t know for sure because Trashlive made the choice not to research that far. So we did it for them, since Concord-Carlisle’s teacher’s contract is readily available online (as are all teacher contracts):

If the average teacher in Carlisle makes over $100,000, it means that the vast majority of them have been there for at least 15 years and have Master’s Degrees plus credits. That’s because it’s a great district and probably has very little turnover, unlike urban schools where turnover is high because the clientele is more challenging. If you have a MBA and you’re working for the same company for 15 years and you’re not making AT LEAST this much, then you’re a sucker.

As far as teacher contracts goes, this is a pretty good one. They obviously have good leadership in their union. Plus, it’s a wealthy, heavily liberal community, so obviously they’re gonna support their teachers and they generally don’t have a big issue with paying more in taxes in order to do so. And in return Concord-Carlisle is one of the highest performing districts in the state year after year, so they’re obviously getting a good return on their investment.

But look at that chart for a first year teacher. If you come in with a Master’s Degree you $56K. Big deal. In the private sector a Master’s Degree is worth far more than that. A PhD gets you $64K. Once again, that’s far less than someone with a PhD would be worth in the private sector.

Oh, and where do we expect teachers to live? This district is one of the wealthiest and most expensive towns to live in in the state. It’s surrounded by places like Westford, Acton, Lincoln, Sudbury, Lexington, Wayland, and Burlington. Property value in those towns is INSANE. Good luck finding a house on a $100,000 salary in Carlisle. Are all teachers supposed to live in Worcester or Lawrence and commute to the wealthy suburbs to work every day? Are teachers respected professional or hired help?

For the record, the median salary in this state for teachers is…..

Yea, much lower.

It’s just such bullshit how MSM outlets continue to post teacher and cop salaries for the sole intention of turning people on each other by appealing to some of the dumbest people society has to offer. It works every time:

Newsflash – teachers don’t get paid during the summer. Vacations aren’t really vacations. They’re forced furloughs. Teachers don’t have the option to work then and get paid. If they did many would take it, which is why so many teachers have second jobs.

And when do people think their children’s tests are graded, lessons are planned, and parents are contacted with concerns? During magic time? Nope. Teachers are doing that during their unpaid free time. And ya see all those supplies in the classroom? Guess who’s not paying for that? You. Because most teachers stock and supply their classroom completely out of pocket. Many spend well over $1,000 a year, but can only claim $250 on their taxes.

Then there’s this:

Yea good point Justin. If you don’t have kids in school you shouldn’t have to pay taxes that go to public schools. Kind of like how I haven’t had to call the cops once this year, so why should I pay their salaries? Oh, and my house didn’t light on fire so I want a refund from the fire department too. See how stupid you sound?

Here’s another thing – Masslive and other MSM outlets post stuff like this to increase their following on social media. Turtleboy’s Facebook pages grew so fast because so many people interacted with posts. When you interact with a Facebook post your entire friends list sees it. Then people start following that page because most of us like to bust out the popcorn and watch people yell at each other. That’s exactly what Masslive did here. This is nothing more than a lame attempt to pick up cheap followers.

The bottom line is that if teachers were getting some great deal with a high paying job where you only have to work half the year, then everyone would be lining up to be a teacher. Instead over 50% of new teachers leave the profession after three years. Because you couldn’t pay me enough to be a teacher, and unlike Trashlive we have all the respect in the world for those that chose to pursue this honorable profession.

Want to challenge my $78,000 salary after 26 years of teaching? Go ahead. But come do my job for 1 month first (I would have said a week, but you’d need time to learn the ropes.) Put up with all those kids, parents, laws, the Dept. of Education, and some moron asshole Principal who has less time in the classroom than a 25 year old teacher. THEN…AND ONLY THEN…can you stand in judgement of my 183 day salary that is spread out over 52 weeks. I don’t give a rat’s ass what you make. Thank you.

Come to my work and see how hard it is. Cry me fucking river.
Not everyone has kids or plans on having them. So why do I have to keep paying for you to work 9 months out of the year? Hell with the sick time you people accrue you take whole years off.

My children are not in this district, but with 2 children on the spectrum I could never put a price tag on what the Teacher’s , Para’s and several other’s in the school district have done for both my children. I get that I am of the unpopular opinion. What I can guarantee you is that certain Teacher’s (especially with my oldest ) have gone above and beyond their duties for my children. I am eternally grateful, and until you have gone from specialist telling you that your children will never be “normal ” to Teacher’s who (in 2 different school districts ) believe in Your children you will never understand where I am coming from. I publicly thank them andwill continue to support them. Anyone who has had my experience (2 different children, 2 different age’s) would know why I think Teacher’s should be paid more. Teacher’s saved bothof my Boys live’s. They didn’t care what the specialist said. I now have 2 Boy’swith Autism who are doing phenomenal
Funny thing is their Teacher’s say it’s because of me, but I know the truth. It was because of them and I am eternally grateful ♡

Teacher retires five years ago after 40 years of service. In that time their total contribution to their pension is about $100k INCLUDING accumulated interest. They then retire at age 63 after accepting a lump sum early retirement incentive of over 70k and will receive over 60k/year for the rest of their life. I’ve seen many many cases just like it.

Turtle, I generally agree with you on most things but you play with the numbers just as much as TrashLive does. An average teacher’s salary of $69K is ~$83K annualized when you factor in a 10 month work schedule; not to mention the vacations during the school year. Yes they grade tests and do things outside of the work day but what profession does not. You want a 9-5 job punching a clock then don’t go to college and get a degree that requires you to mortgage your future.
Further, why the hell does your average elementary school teacher need a masters or a doctorate? This is just the union encouraging its membership to get worthless degrees (and more debt) in order to artificially pump up the perceived value of the union membership.
Finally, comparing a teacher salary to and MBA salary is again a ploy. If you have the option of getting a Teaching masters or an MBA and you choose the teaching masters because you believe the degrees will result in you getting comparable salaries then you are ill-informed, delusional or stupid. None of these results speak well of choosing a teaching masters.

I respectfully disagree. Teachers work extremely hard, and have to deal with the children of individuals, like yourself, who don’t value education. Bet that’s fun. Next time you’re at the grocery store, look around and see how many people you wouldn’t want to associate with-particularly in Worcester. Probably in the range of 75%. Guess what, teachers have to deal with all the children of those people, and are charged with fostering intellectual development among large swaths of the unwashed masses who will amount to no more than societal leeches. Public School teachers, especially the good ones, change lives and deserve sainthood.

Ignorance is bliss! When was the last time any of you spent the day inside an elementary school classroom? Every little thing that needs to be done (copying, correcting, testing, data collection, generating data reports, posting data reports, behavior documentation, parent calls, lesson planning, parent group meetings, faculty meetings, grade level meetings, PLC meetings, report cards, conferences, shopping for lessons, setting up lessons, etc) is being done AFTER contract hours. Even police get over-time and do not pay for their own supplies, as it should be. Not to mention kids who swear at you, bite you, throw things and spit at you…So until you really know what it is like to be on the trenches, shut your pie hole!

Many Teachers Are Dumber Than Their Students
          December 27, 2017 at 1:19 pm

This is simply not true (mostly). And even if it were, most private sector salary jobs pay less and require more than working 6 hour days for 9 months a year. Keep drinking that Kool Aid, though – you need to keep that self-righteous, public union sense of entitlement well exercised for your next feast at the taxpayer trough.

This is why there is no credibility in the public education industry. How can you reform the system when the victims are children and the system is designed to benefit those that keep it that way?

Private sector salary jobs that require a masters degree often start at a much higher salary. Tell you what; home school your kids. I’m sure they will be wonderful and perfectly acclimated.

Out of curiosity-what would you like your tax money to go towards (assuming you agree with the basic premise of taxation)? If you, for example, paid teachers let’s say $30,000, making the argument that they have 3 extra months to earn additional income-what kind of individuals do you think you would attract to the profession? Would you expect them to have degrees and training?

Also, as an FYI-anytime you reference ‘drinking that Kool Aid’ in anything you write, you immediately discredit your own opinion.

For whatever reason there’s very little honesty in the conversation of total compensation when it comes to civil servants. Teachers make a relatively small contribution to their pension and then have additional tax deferral options that aren’t seen in any other industry. In addition to an exceptionally generous pension teachers can often max out 403b AND 457 plans AND a Roth IRA. The untaxed value of the benefit packages including healthcare plans found nowhere else is enormous. I wouldn’t mind so much if it were at least acknowledged. I’ve attempted some version of this post five times so in the unlikely case that this makes it to the page I’ll end by saying that numbers aren’t politically correct and this can all be easily demonstrated.

You respectfully disagree, and then the next thing you write is an unjustified insult about valuing education. You obviously didn’t value yours, or you wouldn’t have written what you did. Just another dumbed down subject that would rather be pandered to than forced to use their brains.

Well most people with kids don’t pay for public schools. Hell in worcester most parents don’t pay any taxes and get money back. Wheres my tax credit for not being a burden on society. Plus 7 grand a month is compensation enough for a teacher right now.

I live near an elderly complex. The police, fire and ambulance run up and down my street at least once a week, sometimes more. That’s the argument I use every time someone makes the bright statement that because they don’t use a service they shouldn’t have to pay taxes for it.
