So we have to address the ads on Turtleboy Sports, because we’re getting a shitload of negative feedback about them about the redirects that people are getting, mostly on mobile devices. I’m sure plenty of people reading this (unless they got redirected again) have had this happen to them:
Let’s start from the top….
Hosting a website that gets upwards of 2 million views every month can get pricey. But Turtleboy Sports is more than just a popular blog with millions of viewers. It’s a target for hackers. We get hacked an obscene amount so we have to basically employ a team whose job it is to constantly stop malicious attacks on the site. Sometimes it happens hundreds of times per day. This adds to the cost.
Turtleboy has bills to pay too, and we’ve reached the point where local businesses alone cannot pay those bills. It’s also not time efficient for us to go out and find new advertisers since we also have to produce content on a daily basis. Without hot takes the blog could not exist.
That’s where an ad network comes in. Turtleboy cannot call up Mr. Uber or Mrs. Hewlett Packard, or Mr. American Express. These gigantic corporations allocate an amount of their budget to advertising. They then pay an advertising network to find websites that will give them the amount of views that they pay for. The ad network is the middle man and they take their cut. Everyone’s a winner. The ad network gets paid. The corporations save time, and time is money. And Turtleboy can focus on what Turtleboy does best – generating hot takes, exposing corruption, and putting bad guys in jail.
We use a couple of ad networks, one of them is MGID. They’re the ones who give you this:
And these popups:
They’re not the problem though. You can easily just click your mouse and the pop up is gone. Plus, they only pop up on desktops, and most of you reading this right now are not on a desktop. Granted, Grandma Turtleboy does not really like a wall full of thong while she’s reading her morning Turtleboy, but it is what it is. You can either click on it or scroll past it and then you’re done with it. I know, it’s like the worst thing in the world, but I think you’ll survive your traumatizing experience on this free website.
The ad network that is causing the most trouble are the ads that are coming from Monumetric, which is our biggest client. They’re a company based out of Utah that does advertising for tens of thousands of large websites. Every day they try to figure out which of the providers are sending rogue codes that cause some people to get redirected. Here’s an email they sent us yesterday:
The problem is, they can’t figure out which provider is doing it. They’ve had hundreds of people at their Utah headquarters attempt to get redirected so they can figure out what the problem is, but they can’t get all the popups that people in Massachusetts seem to get. This leads them to believe that the problems are geographical.
So our conundrum is simple – without ad networks the blog cannot exist, but at the same time we can’t afford to have our brand and reputation destroyed by shitty ads.
Here’s some things you can do in the meantime while Monumetric continues to figure out which providers are causing these issues:
- Try using Google chrome. On this Turtleboy’s phone we have issues with Safari sometimes, but we’ve never once been redirected while using Google Chrome.
- Allow the blogs to load before scrolling down. It’s clear that something happens that triggers the redirect when you start scrolling down quickly. I understand you want hot takes, and I can’t blame you for that. But just give it a few seconds and the site hopefully will load normally. Sometimes you inadvertently click on ads by scrolling down too quickly as well.
- If you get redirected constantly and can’t get on the site by clicking on a blog from our Facebook page, try going to Turtleboy Sports home page directly and reading blogs from there. Usually that helps.
If none of these things work we just ask you for patience. I know that I’ve had times where I literally could not get on the site. It’s frustrating and it sucks. But it gets fixed pretty quickly. We are new at this, and we’re complete amateurs. But we’re building something special here and there will always be bumps on the road and kinks that we need to work out.
The bottom line is that Turtleboy will be forever free. We are not the Turtlegram or the Boston Globe, and we would never even consider charging a penny to consume hot takes. If everyone reading our blogs bought a mug, or a t-shirt, or something else just once a year, then we would never, ever have to have an ad on here ever again.
And that’s what’s so hilarious about some of the butthurts complaining. I’ve never seen 99% of them support Turtleboy by buying a shirt. Basically they’re whiny little bitches who think they’re entitled to free shit. If you wanna tell us about the problem, that’s perfectly understandable. We like to know. But when some of these dooshcanoes tell us to take down the ads or generally just whine instead of helping find a solution, we can’t help but laugh at them. Oh, you’re temporarily inconvenienced because you can’t get on a free website? Poor thing. I know, being an American is hard.
Turtleboy is not your safe space. We don’t care about your feelings. We don’t care about being nice to you when you say dumb things on our Facebook page. We are not professional or politically correct. We will fire right back at you because you are the type of person that we love to blog about.
We do want to make the site better, and we do care about your experience on the website. We actively try to improve it on a daily basis, and we just ask for your patience and support while doing so. Or just keep whining about it in the comments. Whatever you think is more productive.
We urge you to support the Turtleboy Sponsors by doing business with them. Without them none of this is possible. Click on any of them to check out their sites or Facebook pages.

So, a few words of advice…
– Awhile back, the Facebook app started using its own internal browser to open links. If you’re getting redirected, then that’s probably what’s opening your TB links from Facebook. Disable that to force links to be opened in your browser of choice (Chrome is the way to go, especially on Android devices). I have the Facebook browser disabled, and I didn’t even know about the redirect problem until I read this blog post.
– Install AdGuard on your Android device (don’t know about iOS). It’s not on the Play store, but it’s easily the best ad blocker for Android. I’ve been using it for awhile on both my phone and tablet, and can vouch for its safety.
– On your desktop/laptop, use Chrome. Install AdBlock (which will get rid of most of your pop ups and other garbage) and Removes Taboola (which will block those boxes full of clickbait articles about that one great diet trick or whatever). Taboola is a different ad service than Monumetric, but apparently they use a similar enough code that I haven’t seen those clickbait boxes in months.
You don’t get 2 million views per month you get ~250,000 visits per month from ~35,000 individuals. You can’t count people hitting the back button as visitors. That’s lying. Additionally if you did get 2 million visits per month you could afford a team that would prevent your site from being hacked multiple times per day. What you are doing is allowing trashy ads to install adware on your users computers when they visit your site.
TB can you add a link to donate directly without buying merch?
Hey TB, do what you gotta do, but please leave the ad with the upskirt of the girl bending over picking up the kielbasa off the floor, I like that one
Free here, things happen, bear with it and it’s surely not the end of the world.
Tb is now blocked at work 🙁
NSFW
Tell Grandma Turtleboy that I do like a “wall full of thong”!
I have 1blocker installed on this iPad. No redirects at all. Very few pop ups get through on other sites. Ad blocker also works but is buggy.
In crazy Bernie’s world everything would be free. Too bad the cackling bitch stabbed him through his carotid.
Shit in one hand and wish in the other. Comment below and let me know which one filled up first.
Scrolling by soft porn is fun!
We don’t have an issue with pop-ups over here because we aren’t total morons and can problem solve like adults. God forbid anyone figures out a solution instead of bitching and complaining and whining about how they can only read the comments. Jesus H, people. Who feeds you and wipes your ass? Maybe ask them to help with your redirects.
ad blocker solved the issue. The site is faster aging and none of the soft porn adds.
I use Firefox and installed an ad blocking plugin. Boom. Done.
Sweet tiny baby Jesus people it’s 2016. Learn the interwebs.
Shhh don’t tell them. The people who don’t block ads are subsidizing our ad free experience.
