Heat StreetThe University of Chicago, one of America’s most prestigious and selective universities, is warning incoming students starting this fall not to expect safe spaces and a trigger-free existence during their four-year journey through academia. In a letter sent to the class of 2020, Dean of Students John (Jay) Ellison said one of the defining characteristics of the school was its unwavering commitment to freedom of inquiry and expression. Civility and mutual respect are vital to the campus culture, the letter states, but not at the expense of shielding students from unpopular opinions or ideas.

“Our commitment to academic freedom means that we do not support so-called “trigger warnings,” we do not cancel invited speakers because their topics might prove controversial, and we do not condone the creation of intellectual “safe spaces” where individuals can retreat from ideas and perspectives at odds with their own,” the letter states.

The University of Chicago is consistently ranked one of the top universities in the world, and also one of the most selective. Only about 8% of the more than 31,000 people who applied to enter the class of 2020 were accepted by the school. The warning from Chicago stands in sharp contrast to many other American universities that have gone out of their way to coddle students by protecting them from ideas they may find offensive or disturbing.

5kwoce

So-called trigger warnings have been issued over everything from newspaper opinion pieces to art exhibits to reading assignments so that students who might find the content distressing or disturbing can avoid being exposed to it. Safe spaces, where students can shelter from ideas or expression they find discomforting, are the other trend du jour on some campuses. Brown University last year turned a room on campus into a safe space by outfitting it with cookies, coloring books, soft music, pillows and a video of frolicking puppies, along with trauma counselors, after students complained that a speaker invited to campus would be too upsetting.

The University of Chicago is having none of it. To drive home the point, the letter to students includes a link to a report on freedom of expression issued by the university in January 2015. The report quotes a former president of the University, Hanna Holborn Gray, as saying that “education should not be intended to make people comfortable, it is meant to make them think.

“Universities should be expected to provide the conditions within which hard thought, and therefore strong disagreement, independent judgment, and the questioning of stubborn assumptions can flourish in an environment of the greatest freedom,” she stated.

Just when Turtleboy had lost complete faith in secondary education, this guy comes out of nowhere and is the hero we all need:

xrcbsitayf1761220140423

Must be the stache.

KMarko over at Barstool Sports put together a list of just a small fraction of some of the colleges that have made headlines by creating safe spaces:

avHnbUZ

Don’t forget the heroic Hirsi Ali being denied the right to speak as graduation speaker at Brandeis University because the former Muslim from Somalia, who had her genitals mutilated in the name of Allah, was “Islamophobic.”

Or the Bowdoin College students who got in trouble for wearing sombreros at a “Tequila” party because this is an example of “cultural apporpriation.”

Or the black female Yale student who cussed out her professor, yelled “who the fuck hired you,” and said it was his job to create a safe space for her after he had the audacity to suggest that free speech is important.

Or the Hampshire College student speaker at graduation (and the biggest pussy who has ever lived) who called his internship “slavery,” and condemned “Hampshire College’s capitalist, sexist, rape culture, racist, prison industrial complex, transmisognistic. Simply put, our institution is stuck under white, cishetero patriarchal liberalism. Fuck Hampshire College.”

And most famously at UMass, Jennie Chenkin and Trigglypuff showing up to literally yell and scream over three conservative speakers that the UMass Republicans Club paid to have speak there.

cj5NCZ

Colleges have become places where rich white kids’ parents spend $60,000 a year for them to learn about the supposed struggle of minorities they have never interacted with before, so that they can be their “advocates” by shaming and censoring other white people who have actually lived in reality.

Newsflash – if you need a safe space, then you are not ready for college. Period. You simply are not socially mature enough, and you are not ready to live on your own. College was invented so that people could become smarter and acquire skills that would enable them to attain better paying jobs. The alternative to college has always been work or the military. There is no safe space in either of those, so why should there be for college?

And I really hope Dean John Ellison is a liberal. Because generally conservatives think safe spaces are stupid things we should laugh at. But along the way liberalism has been hijacked by PC pussbags who are more concerned with protecting people’s feelings than they are about bettering society. They’ve become fascists who win arguments by yelling over people about how much their feelings are hurt from your “harassment.”Normal liberals need to take their ideology back from the thugs and naniburgers.

Don’t take my word for it – take it from America’s most famous liberal:

If Obama thinks that liberal college kids need to stop being pussies and hear some different points of view, then that should tell you all you need to know about what colleges have become. Hopefully Dean John Jay Ellison has started a trend that more colleges will catch onto.

Margret Melican, what’s the story with the Gaffney/Tirella defamation suit?
Hear Pineiro and Scott joined to defend Tirella and you’re representing Aidan.
    Give us some details.

Can we please stop calling Hampshire a college? It’s pretty insulting to all the actual colleges out there.

I majored in frisbee! With a minor in hacky sack… Classes were in the quad next to the smelly drum circle. I had a B+ average, would have been an A, but the mushrooms made me throw up…

Those were the days! Now, I just get yelled at by some high school drop out for not making the Big Macs fast enough to keep up with the drive thru traffic during lunch rush.

Best $75k per year my parents ever spent! Oh yeah… #15anhour

The alternative to going to collage USED to be “get a job or join the military. ” Now the kids can just stay home at mommies place and live off of the taxpayers.

Safe to say we’re at the point now where helicopter parents are ready to send their little SJWs off to school, and encourage them to dictate what needs to be provided and how the institution will provide it. No mention of what is being taught there, as it’s all about what these kids are expecting to receive. I thought the expectation of a university is to provide an education, not coddle these kids when Mexican food being served is considered racial, food options not being diversified, and designated safe areas where free speech is not to be expressed. I’m sure the “safe” zone has to be plenty far away from the smoking zone……

My compliments to Dean John Jay Ellison, his warning should be well taken, his University is about education, not continuing to coddle kids that are expecting to be.

Oh – smoking zones are being totally eliminated, too. University of Cincinnati just announced they’ve gone entirely smoke-free, even if you’re just a visitor going to a game at the stadium. They’re not the first & won’t be the last.

You know, because smoking outdoors in the open air is totally detrimental to that guy standing 50 feet away from you.

        August 26, 2016 at 9:15 am

The problem is that some people don’t obey the smoking zones so they ruin it for all the others that do. I haven’t smoke cigarettes in over 20 years so it’s no big deal to me – smoke free zones. And, actually, if you do smoke cigarettes – which is your right – you are a special kind of stupid. Same goes for people who eat themselves into obesity, but it’s not their fault.

You are the most evil person in Worcester county. And you will be proud of this fact.
This post points out this young ladies weight issues and mental health.
This is so Turtleboy. When you are not attacking people due to their physical appearances then you are attacking people suffering with mental illness.
As you know I know these girls. They have good hearts and are good people but you attack them. You attack their sexual identities.
When you are not attacking them you attack homeless people and those addicted to drugs.
You attack the most vulnerable and you are proud of that.
Then you LIE as you did with the stories you wrote about me.
Then there is the racist part of you all which you wear on your sleeves from Turtleboy including the label “wiggers” in his stories to the turtleriders feeling very comfortable relating to you all out here by using words such as “spics” , ni”ggers” and “savages”.
Your defense shows on the countless anti BLACK LIVES MATTER ALSO stories you write about.
I know the other Hampshire college girl you attacked, we didn’t even know you were attacking her even after we called her when she was in tears and overwhelmed with your unjust criminal harrassment of her. I read your story about her the day after the call to her.
I believe in god and karma and I truthfully believe both will justly come for you all holding you all accountable for your deplorable ways.

Big deal , you are an attorney, big fucking deal.

How did I know that your “poor 19 year old on the verge of suicide” was that fucking toad Jennie Chenkin? Lmao I just told fiesty the other night that was who you were talking about. You guys make a really great couple Kevo, seriously, you should turn straight for her, you are absolutely Fucking perfect for each other!!

        • Kevin Lynch
          August 25, 2016 at 7:03 pm

All your hatred aside that girl is very good people.

She cares for others and you criticize her for that.

Yes, I know her and she is a sweetheart. She wouldn’t hurt anyone as she is always smiling and helping others.

She truly is a beautiful person. Why are you see vicious to her and her friends?

You have attacked many many people whom I know. Dozens of them individually.

You people remind me of when Trump made fun of that handicapped guy.

Does such behavior really make you feel better about yourselves?

Some of you have got some extras in life and that fact alone makes you feel like you are better than others.

Your group of turtleriders are just a bunch of bitching cowards. All you people do is bitch.
It is expected of some of the skinny bar room junkies out here who have been giving head while drunk for decades now and they still are in the bars. Time to grow up.

            1. Trading a few facebook PMs doesn’t make you friends.
            2. I’m sure she is nice to you because you agree with her. If you disagree, she’ll stick bomb your house and svream non-stop until you give up trying to reason with this toddler. She will then claim to be the victim.
            3. I started with just as much as you did, maybe less. But I chose a path that made me a productive member of society, so stop labeling, you bigot.

Oh man really Kevin? I’m not even sure what I said about her. I remember not liking her very much so I’m sure it was rude. 🙂 But please, really, please, tell me that she told you that I offended her with what I said! Please, I might actually get a tear of happiness in my eye if you do…. It would truly warm my heart to hear that Jennie Chenkin mentioned me as one of the people who has offended her…. But I got to tell you, I have an INCREDIBLE amount of love and respect for the people who were speaking the night that awful disgusting bitch decided to get what she deserved here… So, I’ll just consider it a little payback for those three and what she did that night. Tell her I said that I truly wish her a thousand unhappy moments, and a seriously bad case of yeast infection.

Something good came out of Chicago – cool.

I read today the Mizzou’s enrollment is down by 2,200. 1,500 of those are out of the new freshman class of 2020, which is something like a 23% reduction from the enrollment of the 2019 class.

How’s that safe space crap working out for you, Mizzou?
