WTF

UPenn Professor Anthea Butler Calls Ben Carson “Coon Of The Year” Which Is Only Racist If You Think That’s Racist

A University of Pennsylvania professor called Ben Carson a “coon,” and apparently you are racist if you think that this is a racial slur.

So we found another really racist professor at the asterisk Ivy League School – UPenn – who apparently has taken a page out of the Nathan Pickens playbook. Goldie Taylor shared an article on Twitter about Ben Carson telling NASCAR fans that he didn’t care if they flew a confederate flag on private property. Since Ben Carson is black, this didn’t go over well with Professor Anthea Butler, who is also black:

Yup. “Coon of the year.” And she’s still employed. I guess it’s not really surprising, since Saida Grundy is still teaching classes without receiving any sort of punishment for saying stuff like this on Twitter:Screen Shot 2015-10-08 at 9.10.13 AM Screen Shot 2015-10-08 at 9.09.28 AM Screen Shot 2015-10-08 at 9.08.52 AM

Well, that’s not very nice. Sure a white guy would’ve been fired in a split second if they ever said something like this, but white privilege is definitely a real thing. Definitely.

When you search for Anthea Butler online this article from Meditate.com is the first to come up. It’s titled “Ivy League Professor Didn’t Actually Call Ben Carson A Coon,” which is weird, because she definitely did. Not only did she call him a coon, she awarded him the coon of the year. It’s written by a white guy named Tommy Christopher, who did some serious whitesplaining to justify why a professor was allowed to liberally call a black presidential candidate racial slurs without any sort of recourse:

There are a few problems with this story, chief among them being that Professor Butler didn’t actually call Ben Carson anything, nor did she even recommend him for the titular award. Butler herself pointed this out before her Twitter account was locked, perhaps because conservatives decided to defend Ben Carson from her alleged racism by calling her everything from “Buckwheat” to “Jigaboo” to, yes, “coon” (here’s a sampling of those tweets).

Oh I see. She didn’t actually “call Ben Carson anything.” Because that tweet in which she called him the “coon of the year” somehow wasn’t an insult. Plus, Tommy Christopher found some racist things irrelevant nobodies wrote on the Internet. Therefore Anthea Butler is the victim.

Newsflash – when you are a professor at an Ivy League school you’re held to a higher standard than some nobjobs sitting in the Mom’s basement. Because you have the right to say racist things on the Internet until the cows come home, but you don’t have the right to a job. No one does. Oh yea, and if you need 1,300 words to explain what a 9 word tweet meant, it means you’re trying too hard.

Now, if you want to interpret Professor Butler’s tweet that way, you’re welcome to do so, but to state that interpretation as fact is just plain wrong. In fact, maybe you’re the racist for reading that tweet and assuming that she meant Ben Carson is a “coon.” There’s another much more relevant interpretation to be made.

Oh right, right. Turtleboy is the racist because he thinks “coon of the year” is a racial term. Who are you gonna believe – this white social justice warrior, or your dirty, lying, racist eyes? But please, I’d love to hear how this can possibly be interpreted in any different way.

The sentence in Professor Butler’s tweet could have been completed in any number of ways, including “If only there was a ‘coon of the year’ award…Ben Carson could tell NASCAR to hold the ceremony, as long as it’s a majority of people in the area who want to give out the award, and it was on private property.”

LOL. I love it when people do this. That racist tweet wasn’t actually racist. She just ran out of characters on Twitter. What she really meant was this. Because I’m a white guy and I have access to her thought processes.

These definitions are all perfectly accurate as it relates to white people using the word, but among black people, it has a completely different, much more complex meaning. When a white person calls someone a “coon,” they are slurring all black people, but within the black community, the term is not a racial slur, and it’s not interchangeable with the multi-purpose n-word. It is a provocative (and yes, offensive) social and/or political critique that covers a wide range of behaviors. Here’s how the website Coonwatch defines the term.

Oh look, a white guy explaining to other white people how it’s OK for black people to use racial slurs because as unenlightened white folk we just don’t understand the subculture. Plus he cited a website called “Coonwatch” so you know it’s pretty legit.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – words don’t lose their meaning based on the pigmentation of the the person saying them. A racial slur is a racial slur. Period. It’s never, ever OK to use it, particularly when you’re a public figure.

It’a free country, though, so if you want to be offended by what Professor Butler said, go ahead. Just be offended by what she actually said, not what you imagine she said, and just know that no matter how many times she tweets the word “coon,” it’s still racist when white people say it.

Yea, if you wanna be offended by a racial slur, then go ahead. Just understand that it makes you racist to be offended by it. She didn’t actually call him a racial slur. You’re just imagining that. She can call him a coon until the cows come home and he’s gonna defend her, but if you honkies ever get the urge to say it don’t forget to check your privilege first. LOL. He actually wrote this and he gets paid to do so.

The problem is when you start making up the rules as you go along they get lost in translation. Jalapeño bacon mac and cheese boy was arrested last year in Amherst and called the cop a “nigger.” The cop was white. He is white. Because people his age, who grow up in white suburbia, are being brought up to believe that using the “n” word is OK because the lines have become so blurred. First only black people could say it to each other. Then latinos. Then Asians. Then white people form urban areas. Then rich white kids from Long Island.

And it gets to this point because assholes like Tommy Christopher bend over backwards to justify it in a vain attempt to be a white social justice warrior who understands a culture he only read about in books. A black presidential candidate was called a racial slur by a public figure, and this white guy has decided that the black presidential candidate has no right to be offended by it. Because that makes tons of sense.

The problem is he never even spoke to Anthea Butler. He literally just put words in her mouth and gave her the benefit of the doubt. I’m sure he would’ve been equally as charitable if a white professor had used a racial slur as well. I’m sure he would’ve found a way to explain that they didn’t actually mean that in a racial sense, and how they ran out of characters to use on Twitter. Definitely.

Here’s the thing – this guy was ordered to write this article. He writes for a website that obviously has a certain agenda. This story kind of blew up so they had to find some way to justify it. So the suits at Meditate.com called up this schlub and said, “Yea, we need you write a column defending this professor who said one of the most blatantly racist things possible. So you’re gonna have to figure out a way to spin this in 1,500 words or less. Good luck.

So he spit out this drivel, patted himself on the back, went shopping at Whole Foods, and called it a day. Anthea Butler should obviously be fired, but we all know that’s never gonna happen and most likely there will be another professor next week that does the same thing. Welcome to PC America in 2015!!!

Oh Brian Williams works there so anything they say holds water. Give me a break. Dr. Ben Carson is a great life saving human being,we will never know that because they’ll never interview a life he has saved. This lady is a paid schill to say bs on tv. If the BLM want to grow up and be taken legitimate they’d read past I have a dream…. Many important words followed those 4.

I wasn’t offended by her use of the word. I was, however, sad that she couldn’t come up with a more intelligent response.
