WANDA Is Not Happy That Ray Mariano Forced People Like Her To Get A Job To Stay In Subsidized Housing And Neither Is Jim McGovern And Ed Augustus

So the other day Brad Petrishan, a reporter at the Turtlegram, wrote this really good article about former Worcester Mayor Ray Mariano, and the mark he has left as director of the Worcester Housing Authority. Read it when you get the chance. It’s amazing what he’s done there. I remember 15 year ago Great Brook Valley was the wild, wild west. You simply did not go there. Ever. Now the Valley is actually kind of quiet. It’s bizarre, and it’s all thanks to Ray Mariano, a guy who grew up in the projects and built himself up into something.

Ray started a program called “A Better Life,” in which able-bodied adult tenants living in government subsidized housing had to either get a job (working 25 hours a week), go to school, or get the hell out of the projects. At first the program offered classes for people who wanted to better themselves, but no one showed up. So because they didn’t seem to care, he had to make them care. For some reason it is considered “radical” in 2016 to insist that people living off the government dime get a job.

And right on cue the Department of Housing and Urban Development shut down the program, that they themselves had already signed off on. They said they were unaware of certain aspects of the program, which is weird because they already had approved of it. It’s all so strange because the federal government would NEVER screw something up like this. They’re known for their competence and lack of bureaucracy after all.

But it’s not about sticking it to poor people, its about helping them. Because life in the projects sucks, but too many people still decide to live there for the rest of their lives. And since Ray came from poverty himself, and is the oldest of nine kids, he understands how much better life is when you leave the projects. But in order to get out you have to better yourself first. That’s what his program is all about – helping people help themselves.

The results speak for themselves:

  • In 2002, 404 arrests were made in GBV. Last year, there were 78. That’s insane.
  • Petrishan interviews several GBV residents. Not one of them says they feel unsafe living in GBV. That’s insane.
  • Drug arrests plummeted from 99 in 2002 to two in 2015. That’s insane.
  • During “sweeps” of GBV, Ray Mariano himself went door to door at homes that were suspected of harboring drug dealers and other criminals. They ran like rats when Ray came knocking, because they were no longer welcomed in the Valley.
  • “According to WHA statistics, the program has doubled the employment rate of those in the program for more than six months. Ninety-five percent of participants are either going to work or in school, with total earned wages rising from $1.6 million to $4.3 million and personal savings increasing 800 percent, from $16,433 to $143,269.” That’s insane.
  • ““They help you achieve your goals in life,” Jessica Y. Pagan, 20, said of staff. She’s attending Quinsigamond Community College and hopes to go on to get her four-year degree elsewhere.”
  • ““I like that my life coach pushes me,” said Janeal Layne, while Ms. Toro, her neighbor, called the life skills classes “amazing.””

I’m not exaggerating when I say that this is the greatest government program that we’ve ever seen. It has not only been a success for participants, it’s been a great investment for taxpayers. Republicans and democrats alike can both agree that using our tax dollars to fund social programs is OK, so long as those programs are being used to uplift people from poverty, instead of keeping them impoverished, which happens all too often. Society is better off when people are working, spending money, and not committing crimes in order to make ends meet. This program accomplishes that goal.

But of course two of Turtleboy’s most famous villains have a problem with this:

WANDA and Clive McFarlane. If you’re new to the blog then about them here and here

Clive isn’t a fan of Ray Mariano because he “criminalized” residents with his sweeps to kick out the drug dealers. And as you know, Clive McFarlane’s lone goal in life is to be the voice for drug dealers and assholes in general.

Meanwhile WANDA is the world’s oldest 49 year old woman.

11150272_10206982566501487_7327675965635619011_n

Here’s why she doesn’t like this program:

“We were helping tenants get up and out (before he came),” she said, adding, “there’s a difference between helping people get out and putting people out.”

Ms. Alvarado Eaton sees Mr. Mariano as more of a dictator than a director. She accuses him of micromanaging every part of tenants’ lives and caring more about how the outsides of the buildings look than the inside.

Translation – WANDA really doesn’t want to get a job. Life was good when people like her could spend their entire lives collecting from the government, reproducing, and blowing all their money on weed and booze.

In other words, she is the poster child for unchecked entitlement abuse. If WANDA were smart then she’d recognize that the only people being “put out” are those like herself who are too lazy to get a real job. After all, the disabled and elderly are exempt from this program.

WANDA will read this and whine about how Turtleboy is picking on her again, because being a victim is what she has been trained to do her entire life. But the fact of the matter is that the Turtlegram actually sought her out for comment on this story. She is a public figure, and she is 100% open to Turtleboy ridicule. But it’s not just WANDA who has a problem with this, it’s politicians. Gutless politicians:

The City Council has routinely denied requests to chip in some funding for the program, refusals Mr. Mariano has said show his residents are treated like “second-class citizens.” And while City Manager Edward M. Augustus Jr. was very complimentary of Mr. Mariano in an interview Thursday, he stopped short of endorsing the teeth behind “A Better Life.”“I don’t necessarily agree with every aspect of the program,” Mr. Augustus said.

Of course Ed Augustus doesn’t support the program. Because unlike every action he has taken as City Manager, this program has actually helped people. If it doesn’t involve cutting a ribbon at a new hotel, or catering to people like WANDA who constantly place the race card, then Big Ed isn’t interested.

Screen Shot 2016-05-31 at 12.26.24 PM

U.S. Rep. James P. McGovern, D-Worcester, walked a similar line Thursday. “I’d be less than honest if I said that I agreed with everything that he has presented,” Mr. McGovern said. “But I appreciate his leadership, and I appreciate what he’s done, and the concrete results he’s been able to achieve.”

See that? This is why people are sick of democrats. I know I am because I used to be one. I grew up in the 90’s and Bill Clinton was the President and Ray Mariano was the Mayor. Both were democrats. REAL democrats. They were not obsessed with political correctness, and unlike Jim McGovern, didn’t want people on welfare forever. That’s why Bill Clinton famously reformed welfare “as we know it.”

The democratic party for years had been the party that tried to help people help themselves. Now they just use poor people as a voting base. It’s disgusting. People like Jim McGovern NEED people to stay in poverty. Because if he keeps them in poverty, then he can promise them more free shit and they’ll vote for him. But it doesn’t do them any good. It’s all a big scam. This is why Jim McGovern has a problem with Ray Mariano’s plan.

Anyway, the City of Worcester is lucky to have had someone like this running the WHA. He’s moving on now, but his program’s legacy will continue. It needs to be implemented statewide, not only in the projects, but in all Section 8 housing. Because we are a compassionate society, but we’re not chumps. And if you want our money, then you better be investing it in a program that works.

Big huge fan of Ray Mariano. I had him as a professor during my graduate studies. I got to know him and we talk on occasion these days. Great great guy. He is a moderate democrat leaning a bit toward the right as he says. And you can tell with everything that he does. That in my mind is a very cool democrat.

His “Get off your ass” program in the WHA I thought was genius. I think I read that other states are adopting the same type of philosophy but I’m not sure what states or how many. I’d have to look that up again.

Anyway – I grew up right next to GBV. Back then we played little league baseball at Tris Speaker field and most of my teammates were from Curtis Apartments (Great Brook Valley). They were all great kids from great families. Then GBV got all fucked up. Now it is regaining normalcy. All thanks to Mr. Raymond V. Mariano.

    A true leader.

Its appalling how the CM so graciously handed over thousands upon thousands of dollars to Mosaic without hesitation, but, when it comes to a legitimate cause, he can’t be bothered.

Petty McGovern Warren insist upon keeping poor people poor, basically destroying lives. Only problem with what Ray did is push everything out and destroy once good neighborhoods like Hamilton St and Grafton Hill

Jim McGovern is the ultimate poverty pusher. All he does is pimp social welfare programs slowly sucking the life out of these people as they get deeper and deeper more dependent and more addicted to crack and heroin all while he sits there with that smug little fuckin grin on his fat face knowin exactly was he’s doing.

The only reason Welfare reform passed during the Clinton administration is because the Republican had majorities in both the House and Senate. This was also the last time the Federal Budget was balanced and we there was actually a budget surplus. Both of these can be attributed to the Republican controlled Congress.

That being said, kudos to Ray Mariano for doing the right thing!

I hope that Ray runs for office. US Congressman, preferably….

If anybody can knock off McGovern in a primary, its Ray.

Sherrif Lew or The Fattman will run against him, tho

Remember the immigrants from yesteryear. Didn’t have much, performed hard work and long hours, all to proud to accept welfare and shunned that avenue preferring to sacrifice and pull themselves up the hard way. Society must take care of it’s most vulnerable. Absolutely. But able bodied that scam the system and refuse the path becoming contributing members if society hurt the truly vulnerable, elderly, or needy. What’s the difference between today’s immigrants and those from our past. By the way, stereotypes don’t just get created out of thin air.

Since Mariano left, he will probably be replaced by a left-wing lemming. Then, the programs that are active there, to help the people. Will be stopped one by one. Hopefully I’m wrong, but that’s the politics here usually. Mariano, did a great job, good luck to him !

My thought exactly. Just like Guiliani’s New York is going backwards, unfortunately all of these GBV improvements will disappear soon enough. Disgusting. People don’t even see that Democrats are creating a new slavery society.

I agreed with everything until you stated bill Clinton was a great president. So many terrible incidents happened on his watch which lead to 911. Had he been paying attention instead of diddling interns….

Personally I’d try to multitask and get it all done. Kill terrorists and score a hum job simultaneously. But that’s just me.

      I’m weird like that.
