Saw this picture on the Facebook machine that a turtle rider took at the West Mountain Street Price Chopper in Worcester:

It’s like they’re begging you to use food stamps on literally the most expensive, luxury food item that a grocery store can sell. This is why people don’t trust the government. Because they rub shit like this in your face. You know who’s not eating lobster tonight or any time soon? The Turtleboy family. Because we’re on a budget, just like lots of other hard working folks. But I’m glad to see that my tax dollars are going to people who will eat better than I will tonight. Because that makes TONS of sense.

The purpose of food stamps and welfare in general is simple – it’s supposed to be a tool that you use to uplift yourself out of poverty and become self sufficient. And I’m all for that. I’m not a laissez-faire guy. I wanna help my fellow man get his or her shit together so they can become a taxpaying contributing member of society.

ahzry

But this doesn’t uplift people. It encourages them to make poor decisions to which in turn will keep them in poverty. That’s why they made the EBT sticker bright yellow. And quite frankly, if you’re on food stamps, it’s very likely because you’re not known for making smart decisions. Therefore a government that actually gives a shit about helping poor people would put restrictions on what people can spend their food stamps on. No candy, no soda, no cigarettes, no lottery, no cashing it out for real money, and certainly no lobster dinners.

Look, Turtleboy is a bleeding heart at heart. I can’t help but feel for people that are struggling, which makes me inclined to be a democrat. But when I see shit like this it makes my blood boil. And it’s the fact that people like Jim McGovern and Elizabeth Warren REFUSE to admit that there is ANY sort of abuse out there which makes it impossible to support people like them. I’m all for paying more out of pocket in taxes if it means it’s going to be spent efficiently and it will help people rise out of poverty. But the problem is that the government and efficiency are two words that don’t seem to go well together in Massachusetts.

This is the type of comment that ensures that poor people will remain trapped in the cycle of poverty:

Screen Shot 2015-09-07 at 1.58.14 PM

It’s pretty simple. If you feel the same way as this commenter, then you don’t like poor people. You want them to remain in poverty so you can win an argument on Facebook. You want them to be dependent on you so they can eat. Because that lobster is only good for one meal. But what will their children do when there’s no breakfast or lunch tomorrow? One of the biggest factors that hinders children from doing well in school is coming to school on an empty stomach. Because thousands of kids in Worcester live in households there was no breakfast that day because they ate lobster last night. And you can’t learn effectively on any empty stomach and a lack of sleep.

And of course the solution to this is more free shit. Free breakfast, free lunch, free after school programs, free dinner. Free everything. Because it’s a million times easier for upper middle class liberal folks to write a check than it is for them to volunteer at a soup kitchen or help people learn how to make smart decisions.

531701_10100118430955607_1306307989_n-300x210

So who is more to blame here – the government or Price Chopper? I say it’s 50/50. The government should be passing laws that put restrictions on what you can and cannot purchase with food stamps. And Price Chopper technically isn’t breaking any laws, but they’re purposely preying on poor people at the taxpayer’s expense. Because what happens when someone comes in and uses a week’s worth of food stamps on one meal? Who suffers? Oh yea, their children. And who pays for it? Oh yea, we do. So basically Price Chopper has no problem profiting off of morons while the taxpayers finance this.

I’ll tell you one thing though – Turtleboy won’t be shopping at Price Chopper until they end this nonsense. We’re not really into the whole boycott thing because it’s such a hippie move. But we wouldn’t be offended if you followed suit and took your business to Market Basket or Big Y.

There are plenty of people out there that are on food stamps and work! Just look at places like Walmart that had a food drive. They might have a food drive for the poor because they are nice people right…… wrong it was for their own employees! Getting food stamps is only a part of the problem that might need a little more oversight but what needs even more oversight is the way that these huge companies including these very same grocery stores don’t pay living wages to their own employees who then go get food stamps and spend them where?????????? The places they work…..Yet you don’t see that as a problem. Not all people that get food stamps are welfare queens and drug dealers. If you wanna pick on someone pick on some of the corporations that are banking on the fact that yes you pay taxes and yes they go to social programs in turn are spent at these multi million dollar corporations that don’t have to pay any taxes at all. Get a clue!

So myself, and my husband, and oh yeah, my 72 year old father who STILL works, are paying for welfare peeps to dine on lobster. Please everyone..vote for Trump and make America great again!! Because this is sickening. So they can use certain ATMs to get cash, spend that cash at the strip club, then waddle on over to PC and have themselves a lobster dinner, lol. Living the dream right there!

Even if this was some sort of joke or mistake the abuse is insane and will never stop and this is right on par with the abuse that goes on daily..Anyone who pushes the issue will never get elected. Want to fix the problem ? We have empty buildings all over the city put food banks in them and fill them with knock off rice krispies and block cheese and surplus just like any dollar store..See how many starving people show up to collect the free food then..I have zero problem helping starving people but all this program does is ensure the liberal machine keeps getting elected

I am sure I am not the only one who has seen convenience stores ring in cigarettes under grocery…I have called the state multiple times and get the we will look into it story every time..The system is past broken

Everyone work some over time this week to pay extra taxes..Baby Momma needs Lobster!!

Or perhaps a careless clerk in PriceChopper’s seafood department merely placed the “EBT Approved” sticker on the WRONG package?! Not everything is necessarily as it appears on the surface. A telephone call to store manager Amanda Terencio at (508)854-8474 should be sufficient to verify a simple human error. Lighten up, please!

Whether or not lobster (raw OR cooked) should be eligible for government/taxpayer subsidy/subsidies is a totally different matter!

Quit freaking out. It’s called being environmental. Nothing went to waste. Some jackass at my party passed out so we had to bring the lobsters cooked for him and some skank back to the store already cooked. At first They told us that they wouldn’t take them which seemed right but a bunch of onlookers wanteded them so the store kyboshed the unofficial parking lot deal we had with the seagulls if the store credit didnt work out. Whoever bought those third hand sewer lobsters fought freakishly large seagulls all the way to their car.

I’ve seen this advertised inside Shaws, as well. Cooked lobsters = meal, uncooked lobsters = groceries (according to the law, not to me). I agree with your premise that this shouldn’t be allowed, but when every supermarket does the same thing, you can’t boycott just one.

If your income is so low that you need EBT to cover a basic human need… eating, I would hope that they atleast budget it correctly. It is not meant for you to splurge or treat yourself. It is meant for you or your kids to not starve. If you go to food banks or soup kitchens I am sure they are not serving lobster.

Amen, TB. Bottom line is if you need food stamps you should be treated as subhuman. You want normal people food? Get a job. These people should have to pick through trash for their meals.

Price Chopper isn’t the one that made the policies which allowed people to buy this kind of thing on their EBT card, they’re simply just taking advantage of what was put in place by our government. But even if the ‘EBT approved’ stickers weren’t on there, it’s not like that’s going to stop or detract users of foodstamps for purchasing fancy foods like lobster anyways.
I do agree that it’s appalling that such high end food is allowed for purchase of EBT cards, but Price Chopper has very little to do with this.
Personally I try to avoid going to PC ever since they stopped their 24 hour operations for all of the inner-city locations.

I was out in Hawaii a few weeks ago and ran into a girl who is a case manager in one of Massachusetts “Social Services” departments. She is Puerto Rican, half my age, an irrelevant fact but we got hammered at a sushi bar, random meet.

Anyway she seethes at the waste she sees every day and goes home furious! She walks into filthy homes to see brand new TV’s, kids with new shoes, mom’s with new tattoos and boyfriend’s with warrants sitting around enjoying the good life complaining they can’t make it on government assistance while she is barely making it after busting her ass and getting a college degree to help these assholes! She says she has a huge heart, wants to make a difference, but can’t afford to live the way they do, and she has a job! She has college debt but she has honor and honesty.

Many of her co-workers share her opinion but think they can make a difference. I tried to talk some sense into her. I made no headway. The EBT crowd will only change when all benefits are cutoff. Take their kids away and take care of them. Take care of the elderly and the truly disabled. Leave the rest to suffer, rot and die. We don’t need them.

  • RJ
    September 7, 2015 at 11:53 pm

This would be like agreeing to help your brother buy a car so he can get to work. He needs it, can’t afford it, you want to help, you can afford to help, great. No problem. Then he rolls up in a brand new Mercedes. That wasn’t the idea. The idea was to help him get something to go from point A to point B, not to have him rolling along in luxury. Lobster is a terribly inefficient use of money when the goal is to have enough food to keep from being hungry. Also, to the “you don’t get to tell them what to do!” crew….yeah, we do. When you take society’s money, you get society’s opinions on how you spend it. Don’t like that part of the bargain? Don’t take the money. If someone came to me and said they needed to borrow some money to feed their kids and I saw them walking around with new shoes the next day, I’d be angry. If you take my money, I get to have an opinion.

As to the people who aren’t abusing the system: just move along, this doesn’t apply to you.

So is a dollar can of tuna fish. As a working parent I have to get creative sometimes to make sure my kids eat healthy meals. Lobster is not in the budget. I don’t get assistance but I do know that they don’t give you enough to eat a really healthy meal every day. Is the lobster really for the kids or did they have ramen noodles while the parent(s) ate like kings.

” If you are on a budget you shouldn’t be eating lobster dinners. reasoning like this is why they will never get out of dependence. ”

Excellent point. This is slightly off-topic, but that quote reminded me of years ago, I gave up artificial nails because the recurring cost of upkeep was too much. A few days after getting rid of them, I saw a woman on the local news, complaining about her financial situation, how hard it was to pay for food, clothing for her child, no one was helping her out…THEN I noticed HER very long, airbrushed nails.

Hmmm…food for my child, or get the nails filled-in this week? Priorities.

  • bostonhater
    September 7, 2015 at 9:20 pm

Way off the mark here tb. First you are condemning one store, when they all do it. Second, not everyone with foodstamps have children. Many are elderly whose social security doesn’t cover their food needs. Third, letting them buy lobster doesn’t “keep them poor.” I’d like to think that everyone deserves a treat sometimes. What you’re calling for is the control over what people choose to do with their food budget. If someone chooses to spend their money on lobster, so be it, hopefully they budgeted enough to afford it.
I think the system is crooked and needs more monitoring, but what you’re suggesting is ridiculous. I find it hard to believe you are a democrat. Everything you say seems to be so far right, that if you moved any farther, you’d fall off the scale. I smell Republican, you have all the qualities. Slowly but surely your rants are seemingly more and more outrageous, at times bordering on hate and anger filled speech. I used to be a fan, but I think this is probably the last time I’ll read the column. You are grasping at straws lately and your 15 minutes are just about up. Focus on real issues instead of spouting off about an overpriced bottom feeding, shit eating, shellfish.

Ha! “Budgeted” for a nice dinner while you are on EBT? Something doesn’t sound right about that statement. What goes through a persons mind they think they can splurge on govt assistance?

“if someone chooses to spend their money on lobster, so be it, ”

Here’s the whole problem with your argument. If they’re on any kind of government assistance then it is not their money. It’s my money and every other tax payer’s money,so yes, we should be able to say how it should be spent.

    September 7, 2015 at 8:23 pm

Hate to break it to you but bigy also approves EBT for prepped lobster dinners. Due to the fact that steaming shellfish is a free service offered by the seafood department there is no difference in the sticker that is placed on raw fresh items from the case and fully prepped shellfish dinners, it is through this loophole that people are able to get lobster and scallops…you name it, through EBT. In my opinion whether it’s raw or prepped shouldn’t matter certain things just shouldn’t be supplemented by EBT but that’s just my opinion. So yeah just because a yellow sticker isnt slapped on it doesn’t mean it’s not necessarily approved under EBT. I worked at big Y for several years and I saw countless examples of entitlement and EBT abuse on the daily..

You can buy anything cold with EBT. Even cooked lobster after its refrigerated. Price chopper is not the problem. All the grocery stores do it, even colony farms. The problem is the government for allowing these types of purchases. EBT should be set up like WIC, you can only buy wants on the check.

The Palestinians were a bunch of nomads that NO OTHER ARAB COUNTRY WANTED. They were squatting on a piece of shit land THAT NOBODY WANTED. But as soon as the Jews showed up and put in some irrigation, making the land actually worth something, now they’re suddenly Palestinians fighting for their freedom against their Semitic oppressors.

Seriously, read a history book. The Israelis were willing to accept a compromise where both groups would have their own state, but the Palestinians wanted all or nothing. So the Israelis basically said, “OK, nothing it is, assholes!” Then suddenly the other Arab countries (who, again, wanted jack fuck all to do with the Palestinians before this) suddenly got a jolt of love for their fellow Muslim and decided it was time to kill some Jews.

And, for the last seventy some odd years, they’ve repeatedly gotten the shit kicked out of them every time.

Those stickers are not to attract poor people. They are used to attract drug dealers who have 5-10 EBT cards that they got for trading drugs for EBT cards. Poor people buy Ramon noodles for 33 cents for the kids to make in the microwave after school while mommy is out getting wasted. Learn the Democratic system. Smarten up dummy.
