Turtlegram: A new cellphone policy in the Worcester public schools is not getting a ringing endorsement from students, who are frustrated by what they see as a crackdown on the devices during the school day. The new rules, which went into effect for the school year that began on Monday, on the surface appear to loosen the old restrictions, which required students to keep their phones in their lockers throughout the school day. Now, students are allowed to keep their phones with them, as long as they’re powered off and out of sight. Teachers can even allow students to use their phones during class for educational purposes at some high schools.

I know a lot of people think kids shouldn’t be allowed to have cell phones in class at all, but I for one applaud teachers who infuse technology into their classrooms. God knows that schools are drastically underfunded, and the fact that we’re still teaching kids using 20 pound textbooks is archaic. There is a world of information available to kids at the palm of their hands. Smartphones are AMAZING!! But instead of using them for that purpose kids are using them to write meaningless shit on Instagram and send dick pics to girls who definitely don’t wanna see dick pics.

Picture being a teacher in a classroom and you’re teaching kids about some boring thing that they could care less about. You could bring them to your school’s computer lab for them to work on an interactive lesson, if only said computer lab existed. So you tell them to whip out their phones and go on Youtube and explore the topic you’re teaching about. That way the learning is in their hands and you’re working on their wavelength. If you were a kid would you rather learn about the Civil Rights Movement by reading about it in a textbook or watching police beat up peaceful protesters? What do you think makes the experience more real and educational?

The mere fact that teachers are embracing this should make kids happy. But as usual they’re whining about it:

But students have lamented the stronger enforcement of the policy, which allows school staff to confiscate phones from offenders. Students have taken to social media to criticize the School Department. After school on Tuesday, several students said they felt the new policy is too heavy-handed.

Oh you can’t use your cell phone to see what the person next to you ate for breakfast this morning? Cry me a river. Billions of people before you managed to graduate from high school without having to go on social media to keep themselves occupied.

“I think it’s kind of bogus,” said Luc Nguyen, a junior at Burncoat High School. “It’s not like we always have it on. And they banned it at lunch, too, which is unfair.”

This is why I’m glad Turtleboy Jr. will never be a teenager. Because I wouldn’t be able to not call him a dumbass if he ever said something like this to the “newspaper.” It’s unfair? Just no. Ya know what’s unfair sunshine? The fact that your teacher gets evaluated based on your performance in his or her class. The fact that they have to go to work every day and deal with ungrateful kids who think they’re being “unfair” for trying to run a classroom with rules. The fact that kids like this from Oxford High School secretly tape their teachers in the classroom and send it to Turtleboy on Twitter in hopes that we will publicly humiliate them and get them fired:

Screen-Shot-2016-03-25-at-8.46.00-AM

Or this kid who secretly recorded his teacher walking into class every day saying “hello”

Alright, that’s pretty funny. But they still didn’t have the teacher’s permission to tape him like that. If a teacher EVER secretly taped a student in class they’d be fired in a heartbeat.

“I understand the purpose, but it’s a major inconvenience,” said Sam Callery, also a junior at Burncoat. While cellphones were supposed to be out of sight in years past as well, “It was more like, ‘Just put it away,’ ” she said. “Now they’ll take it.”

“It’s a major inconvenience.” That quote right there sums up everything that is wrong with this generation of whiners. You live in the wealthiest country in the world, and you have literally everything handed to you. The taxpayers pay for buses to come to your house to pick you up. We all wait in traffic as you take your sweet time getting on and off the bus. We pay for your food if you can’t afford it. We’re constantly looking for better ways to provide this free education to you, and you’re sitting here telling us about how you’re “majorly inconvenienced.” Oh, you poor thing, you.

WjypJKxho4BGAGobS9y2

Newsflash – they should’ve been taking your phones a long, long time ago. Telling you to “put it away” is clearly not a deterrent, because you can just take it out five minutes later. Why wouldn’t you? What’s the worst they could do? But if they take your phone, make you bring it to the office, and then have Mommy or Daddy come and pick it up, then you’re gonna think twice about ever doing that again. Because that would mean that Mommy or Daddy would be inconvenienced, and they’d probably think twice about letting their rule-breaking kids have an iPhone.

Maureen Binienda has been the superintendent of the Worcester Public Schools for about five minutes and they’re already looking a million times better. Probably because unlike Melinda Boone she’s actually worked in schools her entire career and understands what is REALLY going on. Looks like the Turtleboy Sports Revolution is a force for good after all.

P.S. I know a lot of people think this is some brilliant idea that will work:

7a6ed3b53ebf224e23c2e631139ff4e9

But obviously it won’t. Any kid with a brain would just deny that they have a cell phone on them and keep it in their pocket.

As Fiesty mentioned above, we use to pass notes in class which is essentially the same as texting in class. However, what happened when you got caught passing a note? Many teachers use to take the note and read it out loud to the class or make the student read it.

Today, teachers can take the student’s phone but can not access the txt messages and read the conversation like they did with the notes. They simply confiscate the phone and hold it until the class or school day is over and in cases where the student has been caught on multiple occasions, a parent must pick the phone up. They don’t have the embarrassment of having their private conversation exposed to everyone. The special little snow flakes can just suck it up because it could be worse.

    GROW A SET OF BALLS

Isn’t there anyone in the school administration that can grow a set of balls and say “no fucking phones during class” And when the kids or parents whine about it, tell them to simply fuck off, period.

Back in my day we wrote letters and passed them like ninjas. Kids today will never understand the “slide the paper under my shoe” game.

If that was my kid being quoted in the paper, he’d lose the phone completely.

While most parents will understand this and support it, the entitlement crowd will scream bloody murder because their right to use the phone overrules the importance of education. At least in their simple little minds. Little Johnny has every right to post useless information on facebook over learning any day. After all, when your on the dole, why put forth the effort to better yourself. Just blame it on someone else and put you hand out for more free stuff.

This article has inspired me to disclose my upcoming snow-removal plan for the 2016-2017 winter earlier than I had anticipated. My blue ribbon commission has suggested we have all public school children hold their phones half an inch above the snow accumulating on the roads in front of their homes for the duration of each storm. This will provide radiation melting and allow for a heightened sense of community. Paul Moosey will head up the effort by vigorously dialing his rotary phone on his Sturbridge driveway.

You had me at ribbon! Can I cut it? I have my own special ribbon cutting scissors…

Shut up Eldredge – this is the big time. You’re more cut out for water fountains.

Plus, the glare off of my shiny head will help with the snow melting.

Millbury High has this policy, changing it up a bit to make sure that they can text during lunch only. It works.

BLISTER!!! no, we can’t have that. If the little buttercup gets a blister, the DI will be placed on administrative leave, pending an investigation by NCIS.

The texting in class is 1 thing, but its CONSTANT social media crap, updating, posting PLUS sexting. No need! But, in the WPS, the largest concern by far is: texting your ” boys” when something is about to “go down”. Cop or staff who’s trying to address a situation all of a sudden finds him or herself surrounded by the perpetrators buddies, even ones who 10 minutes ago were not at school. No consideration given for this FACT.
