Suburban parents are FREAKING out over this common sense new policy being instituted at Quabbin Regional High School (serving the towns of Barre, Hubbardston, Oakham, New Braintree, and Hardwick)

So just to summarize, the new policy is that if you take a family vacation during the school year, your kid has to make up all the work they missed before they start doing extra curricular activities or parking their car in the student lot. They’re not being suspended from school, it’s a “social suspension.” Basically it motivates them to hurry up and get their shit done so they can do the fun stuff that takes place outside of the classroom.

People messaged us about this assuming we’d be on the parent’s side, so I’m sorry to break it to you guys, but the turtle is just unpredictable like that. We don’t join mobs. We look at facts and draw conclusions based on those. If you don’t agree with this one that’s fine. We can still be friends. But we apologize for nothing.

Just to make it clear, we couldn’t possibly side with administration more on this one. It’s a great policy for a million reasons. We bitch and complain a lot about how every kid gets a trophy right? Well, if a kid misses a week of school because they’re in Disney World, why should they get to just come back to school and reap the same benefits as the kids who woke up at the ass crack of dawn and got through the school day? Suggesting that your kids should get benefits that other kids get even though they didn’t do the same amount of work, is “everyone gets a trophy” personified.

Schools build in 15 freaking weeks of vacation!! If you can’t figure out how to schedule a vacation during that time then how is that the school’s problem? Obviously this policy didn’t come out of nowhere, and CLEARLY there must be a problem in this district with parents pulling this shit all the time. It’s more than likely something the teachers wanted in place.

Think about it. If your kid has a lab in science class that week, how do they make it up? The teacher has to stay after school to accommodate your vacation? What if you take a vacation during mid-terms? Your kid gets an extra week to study and probably finds out all the answers from his friends? Or is the teacher supposed to make an entire new exam just for your special snowflake? If your kid has a group project in with a presentation in history or English class, they get to miss the presentation and collaboration with their classmates and do some worksheets instead because they’re in Hershey Pennsylvania? Fuck out of here.

How bout if your kid plays sports? What if your kid plays football, can you just miss a weeks worth of practice and a game and assume you’ll get playing time as soon as you come back? Fuck no. I wouldn’t want my kid playing for a coach like that. I want my kid playing for a coach that teaches them discipline, teamwork, and responsibility. God forbid we teach kids personal responsibility, right?

Let’s look at some of the whining that’s going on on this page. There’s a lot of it…..

Yea, because it’s one or the other. As a result of this new policy Quabbin will now actively promote drug use and bullying. What a great point!!

Oh yea, lets model our schools after special feelings Germany!! A country with open borders that lets pretty much lets anyone walk in, and then acts surprised when they bombed. Great idea.

No moron. This is EXACTLY how the real world works. First of all, when you have a real job you don’t get 15 weeks vacation, you get like 2 if you’re lucky. Secondly, most jobs won’t let you take those vacation days whenever you feel like. If you’re working on a project or something like that you don’t get to just abandon ship on your coworkers. That’s not how reality works.

It’s actually EXACTLY how most companies are run. Companies don’t work around you. You work around your company. You’re replaceable. Schools exist to train our kids to handle responsibility because that’s what is expected of them in the real world. The fact that people don’t understand this is mind boggling.

Who gives the school authority? Is that a real question? Ummmm….accreditation boards, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, and the School Committee. This stupid comment got 14 likes. This is what we’re dealing with here. No wonder the teachers want change. Imagine dealing with whiny dumb people like this every day?

This was reasonable:

Everything I don’t like is a Nazi!! We’re looking forward to the massive lawsuit though Ryan. Let me know how that goes. Looks like Ryan won’t be the only one in Internet lawsuit court:

Uhoh, this guy right here is contemplating a lawsuit right now!!!

The wheels are in motion, and Attorney Richard N. Vulva is drafting up the paperwork as we speak!!

I can see Edward went to Jupiter to get more STUPIDER!! But yea, telling a kid that he has to go to Myrtle Beach in April instead of October is basically the same thing as flogging. Excellent analogy!!

Loved this too:

See that? If you’re against the policy then your peer group includes Quabbin High School dropouts. Newsflash – if you couldn’t manage to get through high school without dropping out, then you’re an idiot. The fact that Adrianna would blame the school for that because she was probably behind in credits and couldn’t afford to take another art class, tells me everything I need to know about her.

Here’s another chick who dropped out of high school because the school was mean to her:

Once again, this is your peer group. The girl who had no choice but to move to Virginia after the school district called DCF on her ratchet parents. The girl who is three years behind schedule and will graduate high school when she can buy booze. These are your people.

And another one:

First of all, they’re not penalizing students. They’re just not giving them the extra curricular privileges they normally would get until they make up their work. God forbid.

Secondly, the Gateway to College program she was in is for high school dropouts. Congratulations on being the valedictorian of your gaggle of high school dropouts.

Thirdly, if you have “nightmares” from high school, you are the definition of a virtue signaling triggered snowflake. Oh wait, that’s exactly what you are:

Then there’s this:

Oh OK. Then why do we have teachers at all if we can just give your kid a packet and they do it on their own? So how did your kid do science labs without being in an actual science lab? How did they practice basketball plays without being at basketball practice? It’s almost as if there’s a reason we make kids go to school.

Boo-fucking-hoo. Welcome to reality. Where tough choices have to be made and not everything works out the way you wanted it to.

“No one enrolls TO this school.” Yea, I can’t believe you graduated from high school either.

Dumb analogy. Your kid is allowed to miss school if they’re sick. That’s not even remotely the same thing as a family vacation. Only a stupid person would need that pointed out to them.

This is not even remotely similar to the dumpster fire that was Spencer-East Brookfield. That was a school with missing money, teachers being given 30 day unpaid vacations for NO REASON, a corrupt School Committee that wouldn’t let people talk at meetings, a Superintendent that was basically bribing her boss to keep her job, schools with falling ceilings, no textbooks, and crumbling facilities. Quabbin is just asking parents not to go to Disney World during school hours. The horror!!

Says the lady whose profile picture is her chucking the bird.

Check out these white people problems:

Cry me a fucking river. You can’t afford plane tickets to Cancun in February, but you CAN afford to go in May. It must be so fucking hard growing up and jumping on planes to exotic locations, you poor thing!! Ya know what we did for vacations in the Turtleboy household? We packed the stationwagon up with bologna sandwiches and drove to Toledo during April vacation. That counted as a trip. But please, tell me more about how hard you have it because you have to pay more for plane ticket in February.

They’re not meddling in your business. You are free to schedule a vacation whenever you want. They will not be calling the truant officer on you. But no, your children will not get special after school privileges that students who have been coming to school everyday get. Fucked up, right?

You’re right Lori, you do get to decide when the vacation is. And the school gets to decide what policy is. Problem solved.

Oh look, a woman with a hyphenated name whining about bullying. Shocker.

This is the exact opposite of political correctness. Stop ruining great words.

Thank you Beth for being one of the lone voices of reason. But to answer Morgan’s question, of course it applies to the staff. Ya know what would happen to a teacher who defied their bosses and went on a vacation for a week during the school year? They’d be fired, or at the very least written up for insubordination and not paid for a week. This is how the real world works when you have responsibilities.

See all this bullshit? That’s why so many kids are entitled assholes now. Not because they’re inherently more douchey than the previous generation. But because they were brought up by people who have taught them that they’re not personally responsible for shit, and they’ll get the same privileges and rewards as kids who actually show up to school and follow school policies.

Ya know why we didn’t have these problems at Worcester South High School? Because no one’s parents could afford to go to Disney World. So yea, cry me a river with your suburban problems you whiny snowflakes.

We urge you to support the following local businesses. They provide terrific services for the community!

Ummm. I graduated Quabbin my wife. 2 daughters. And youngest is in middle school through school choice .(moved outside district) One best schools in area. Wtf is the issue. Should kids be given a pass no make up what you missed. Part problem is to many sjw from North Hampton area moved into area. Don’t like the policy send your kid to Ware or Athol. Problem with kids these days they have 2 mommies that teaching them to bitch and cry instead of that’s life suck it up and get your shit you missed done.

Okay, so some kids are cheesed off because like if you are on social suspension, you can’t drive your car to school or they will tow it, you can’t play sports, or you can’t attend any school sponsored event. Teachers also don’t understand the caliber of work completion either, so even if you want your social suspension to be over in 3 days, it can be harder after you actually do do the work. That’s just my understanding though.

I’m over 65 years old and I’d like to reprint Gunny Highway’s introduction speech from the movie “Heartbreak Ridge.” But, because it might melt some snowflakes, I won’t.
Fact is that, back in the day, you did what you were told to do. Period! No negotiation!
My parents scheduled our vacation AROUND our school vacation (singular), (holiday vacas were for FAMILY) AND my Dad’s vacation. And, because the Old Man wasn’t a senior officer, he got the shit picks for 1 week vacations. There are no warm waters in June at the Cape or in the Adirondacks. Even the “heated pools” were cold. DisneyLAND, not WORLD. Too far to drive and too expensive to fly!
In retrospect, given the pain & heartache me and my estranged sibs caused my parents, I wished they had left us at home with Gramma and took the time for themselves.
So it was like deja-vous all over when I had to schedule my 2nd wedding with #1 son’s summer vacation, (from QRHS, NO exceptions) custody time, my vacation time (as a rookie, just like the Old Man, the 2nd’s time off and the”honeymoon.” Where? The Adirondacks during the rainy season, of course!!!!
But we dealt with it. That was our lot in life. That is what we did.
Today I can go and come as I please, but I see more and more school age children at family resorts during the school season! And it’s a BIG pain in the ass.
Our recent trip to San Diego was a perfect example….Adults Only pool with school age kids in it! School age kids eating at the bar, in the same in the spa, running in the halls!
And the venue, not wanting to be un-PC, just smiled. School age kids in the museums, running amok and millenial parents just slowly walking around, like deer in headlights….”Nothing to see here people, just move on!”
I saw a baby running at-large at the adult pool and it nearly took a dive before a “custodial” female grabbed it. I loudly commented to others who watched in horror that “They wonder why children drown!” Well, I was given the “stink eye” and “crossed arm” stalk by a male, who seemed to incensed at the comment. Fortunately, froggy didn’t jump.
The world is a good place but some of the people in it are just plain fucked up!!!!

A couple of years ago our daughter needed to have her impacted wisdom teeth removed and we scheduled the 1st visit, ex-rays, consultation, etc, during Christmas break week. When we came to the scheduling part during the visit our daughter didn’t want to have the procedure done during one of the 2 school vacation breaks, winter and spring, and wanted to miss school instead. She was in her senior year and had just been accepted to the college of her choice just before Christmas, she had applied via early decision, so grades were not a problem and she wasn’t playing a winter sport or other activity. My wife and I were adamant that she wasn’t missing school for something that could be scheduled when school was in session. To me this was just plain common sense. Our daughter was just as adamant that she wasn’t wasting her vacation recuperating from her surgery. But since we are the parents our augment won out 🙂

Keep in mind that this district also has Columbus Day and MLK day as 4 day weekends. If you want to use to off prime time excuse, well there you go. The Gateway to College program is not for high school dropouts, in fact many participants in Gateway leave their schools to join the program. Also students are integrated into college setting. It’s not just “a gaggle of dropouts”. If you’re going to try and insult something, do your research.

The Gateway to College program is an alternative for regular high school. Please recognize there are a number of reasons why people find themselves doing better in an alternative setting (in this case, a college setting) for a NUMBER of reasons. Some have left high school because it was too easy, some left because of personal issues, some left because of behavioral issues, some just wanted a head start in college, and many did not want to deal with school administration. Have what you want about the school’s policies, but DO RECOGNIZE that high school is not for everyone, and it does not make those who seek alternatives like Gateway incompetent by any means. In fact, Gateway students are some of the most intelligent and well-rounded people I’ve ever met. Education is an option for everyone, and it doesn’t have to be 8-3 daily dose of cookie-cutter education like public schools.

This policy is over the top bullshit. Having them make up the work is obviously necessary but adding in no driving privileges and no participation in any school activity for what would be 3 weeks for a standard 5 day vacation is dog shit.

I went to Quabbin all throughout my middle and high school career. On occasion my parents would schedule a vacation during the school year and I would miss school. If the teacher was generous I would get work before hand. However, not all teachers were and I had about two days to make up any work when I got back. If I didn’t make it up in time we would get detention or suspended. Also my parents wouldn’t let me go to social events unless my work was done. Even my gym classes would require my parents to supervise me while I didn’t activities that were given to me to make up the class with. They then had to sign off on them. I don’t know if the teachers are different now but I do now that the current principle was at the school while I went there just as the assistant principal and he was actually really nice. They only person I would go to in the offices of the school. I really don’t think this is that big of an issue. I know we as students are lazy and don’t want to get the work done right away but just get it over with. Then you can do whatever you want. That’s what the school is saying. Just act and think like a responsible adult and it’s really not that hard to get by all of the crappy high school rules.

These parents need to read Chapter 76, Section 1 (School Attendance) of the Massachusetts General Laws. They can also be fined if their child is absent XX amount of days. And yes, DCF can be called to investigate.

Snow days need to be made up at the end of the year. Bottom line is: if you miss school/academics, you have to make it up — especially in high school. It’s a no brainer.

I went every September because my father worked 15hrs (plus) a day from 3/31-9/1. Yes we got take home work to be done but nothing like this. Most of your stuff I like that you post. But before you make a comment on a post maybe you should do some fact checking. And learn basic math. Caitlynn Disley is my daughter. One she will graduate at 20 and with credit recovery at the age of 19. Two the school was handed 3 doctors notes and given the doctors phone number. A women there refused it all and wanted to know what my daughters illness was. She had no legal rights to know so they called Dcf end result Dcf yelled at the school not the parents. So if being a parent who cares about there child’s health and education makes me ratchet you are way off on that one. And if you want me to save you some digging I have never been on state assistance I moved to Virginia based on a job offer. Kidney stones, doctor note ignored. Unknown illness that I was getting tested for, ignored. And I’ll be graduating next year, by mot own desire to take summer school and do credit recovery during the school year.

My “ratchety” parents did everything to do to get me educated. And im down in Virginia because my dad moved I myself decided it was better than getting my GED or finishing out job corps where I was hated because I actually did what I was supposed to. Gtfo. I have proof of exactly quabbin did to me and my family, and am currently a straight A student like I could have been if they had done what they were legally obligated to do. Quabbin broke the laws in my case, not my parents

Also, how many allergies you have and if you or any of your family members have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia.

This was always the policy at my high school, and I graduated in the 80’s. Miss the work, make up the work. It’s that simple. Like you said, when these kids enter the workforce the employers won’t coddle them and let them slack off on their work. Yes, your request for vacation can and probably will be denied if the company decides your work on a project needs to be done.

When I was in school, you always had to make up the work you missed when you were absent. While I was rarely out sick, I was excused due to school-sanctioned trips, but I still had to complete all work, which meant working extra hard upon my return.

However, as a previous poster stated, I don’t think we are being presented with all of the facts.

Hey I agree with you about them getting the school work done. However they are only giving that option if the vacation was booked before August 27,2017. Otherwise any student missing four consecutive days gets the two week social suspension regardless of doing the work or not. That I don’t agree with. If they do the work no suspension, but they are not giving that option.

This is in fact an edited policy. The school is reacting to parents complaining that their vacations are being punished. The policy was enacted this past summer and not given to us parents until school started. The reason for the 8/27 date in the edit is for that reason. It gives a bridge for parents and kids to get through this year with minimial incident for a pre-planned vacation. As of next year, there will be no exceptions. As a new transferred-in parent in the quabbin district we agree with this policy. One of the many reasons why we chose to send our daughter here is because they have rules that are followed and not waved for invalid circumstances or if they like your kid over another . This rule only involved vacations or missed time of more than 3 days without reason in any single trimester. Thats 9 days total a year that can be missed without consequence. The fact parents are all upset makes me laugh. Take a vacation, enjoy it, and do the work when you get back. Sorry no dance or practice. Parking is an issue for us but we would deal with it. Oh and most schools have rules about missing practices anyway, they have to be made up before the child plays again. So little timmy is not missing games due to the new rule anyways.
