This article by Stephen Foskett (by far the best reporter at the Telegram) had me laughing today. The quoted parts of the article are in italics, and our responses are in bold.

Telegram: Talking about black incarceration rates while ignoring black crime rates is not the foundation for an honest conversation, Wall Street Journal columnist Jason Riley told a packed audience Monday afternoon at the College of the Holy Cross.

Mr. Riley’s talk touched on several issues involving race in America currently being hotly debated across the nation, and he made no apologies for his conservative-leaning viewpoints on everything from welfare to affirmative action to policing to what it means to be black in a cultural context.

A conservative African-American man who writes for the Wall Street journal. I don’t care what your beliefs are – this is intriguing. Considering all the racial animosity in this country right now, I’m sure the open-minded students of Holy Cross were willing to hear him out right?

Many students in attendance held signs supporting the Black Lives Matter movement, and pictures were circulated of Michael Brown, the victim of a fatal police shooting in Ferguson, Missouri, last year, and Eric Garner, who died after being wrestled to the ground by police last year in New York City.

Oh for fucks sake. 

All the while, Mr. Riley said, it has been considered taboo to look at a cultural component of racial economic disparities. Mr. Riley, who is black, told a personal story about returning home to his native Buffalo to have his young niece tease him that he sounded like he was white. He said it wasn’t the first time he had heard that, but said it struck him that from a young age his niece was making a connection between race and speech. 

Interesting. So the guy doesn’t want to be labeled and put into a box simply because of the color of his skin. That sounds fair. Since Holy Cross students are known for their tolerance, I’m sure they agreed with him right? 

Another student returned to Mr. Riley’s comments about his niece teasing him that he sounded white. The student said the anecdote presupposed that black culture must assimilate into a system that’s being imposed upon them.

Leave it to white upper middle class trust fund babies who never had a job in high school because daddy pays for everything to tell a black guy that he is not black enough. God bless higher education.

A majority white audience telling a successful black man that everything he believes in is racist. The irony is so fantastic it hurts. 

Hippie logic 101 – when confronted with rational thoughts, use big words. Hey Riley, why aren’t you embracing what these white Holy Cross kids think it means to be black? Why are you trying to “assimilate” into white culture? Don’t you know that it’s only socially acceptable for African-American men to speak and act in a certain manner? Didn’t you read Lisa Dyer’s email about being color blind?? If you’re not “embracing” and “celebrating” the color of your skin, then you’re a racist. Cultural Competency 101. 

He said the concern over police shootings of black men is misplaced when the vast majority of black homicides have nothing to do with the police. He said there were around 450 homicides in Chicago last year; 350 of those victims were black, he said. He said that’s roughly twice as high as the number of black people killed by police on an annual basis. He said that means that if you cut the number of black homicides in Chicago in half, you would have saved more lives than there were victims of police shootings.

Boom. Roasted. 

Quoting several influential black leaders of the past, including Martin Luther King and Frederick Douglass, Mr. Riley said what is needed is to encourage blacks to stand on their own, and to return to a strong family unit that includes two parents. 

Sounds pretty racist to me. 

Many students in the audience took umbrage at most of Mr. Riley’s positions, and the ensuing question-and-answer session reflected that. Several students said Mr. Riley used outdated statistics in the face of more recent developments, like the Department of Justice’s report on policing in Ferguson, which found that, among other things, there was a pattern of unlawful bias.

Yea, Eric Holder, a man of integrity, showed data that African-American men were arrested at a higher rate than anyone else in Ferguson. Clearly the only logical conclusion one can reach is that this data is the result of racism. It has nothing to do with poverty, family structure, the rate at which they are committing crimes. Clearly it’s racism. 

Mr. Riley said that as far as over-policing of predominantly black communities goes, he took issue with the premise that higher arrest rates out of bias are to blame. He said his argument is that that’s where the 911 calls are coming from. He called Ferguson an “obsession,” adding that if the goal is to reduce the black body count, “I’m not focused on police.”

Wait a minute. Mr. Riley, are you suggesting that police respond to 911 calls and then arrest people that are committing crimes? Because that sounds pretty racist to me. 

Students argued that there are indeed systemic forces at work that contribute to racial disparities, particularly regarding income, even among college graduates. And other students argued that it’s hard to feel like the education system is supporting them when schools are increasingly resembling prisons under high surveillance.

Ding, ding ding!!! Now I know whose hands are all over this. It’s the Circlejerk in action!! Mentioning cameras in school and relating it to a prison was the dead giveaway. Because in real life the only places there are cameras are in prisons. Everyone knows that. Clearly the students who assaulted vice principals at North High, or the kid who brought the loaded gun to school at Burncoat, weren’t doing well in school because they didn’t feel the education system was supporting them. You know, because of all the cameras. 

In response to Mr. Riley’s argument that self-reliance, and not government programs, is the answer, one student asked how they can develop themselves in a society where they aren’t given a fair chance.

Newsflash dumbass – you go to Holy fucking Cross!! One of the best schools in America. Supreme Court justices went to Holy Cross. You have an opportunity few people in America have. But please, tell me more about how you aren’t “given a fair chance.”

There’s only five million programs out there to help assist at risk youths growing up. There’s government assistance, scholarships, grants, loans. They pretty much hand you the tools to succeed in this country and all you have to do is stop whining and do something about it.  But please, tell me more about how unfair life is. Everyone really feels bad for you. 

Oh yea, and I love the Telegram’s comment section. People complain that our readers are bad, then I see shit like this:

Uncle Tom was a slave who didn’t fight with his masters and thus was always in good standing with them. Until he gets sold to Mr. Legree who then kills him because Mr. Legree is an asshole. Calling someone Uncle Tom is no less than a racial slur. It’s equivalent to calling him a “house slave.” Apparently if you’re successful and proud of it while being black, this makes you an Uncle Tom. And the Telegram didn’t find this offensive enough to take down. Oh yea, and 26 people liked it. But please, tell me more about how Turtleboy is the racist publication in Worcester. 

The bottom line is we make money off a fucking Mom and Pop blog. Families get fed off of this. Just think about that for a second. These morons are sitting here whining about how it’s impossible to make it in America, and we’re getting paid to write blogs. A year and a half ago Turtleboy didn’t even exist. America is what you make of it. That’s the beauty of America. We saw a demand for hot takes so we supplied. 

I’ll end with a quote that the great Mr. French once said in The Departed, “This is America. If you don’t make money, then you’re a fucking douchebag.”
