There’s a lot of random and crappy looking stuff in Worcester. Usually we just drive by these eyesores and don’t think twice about them. But Turtleboy Investigates is going to start a new series entitled “Wonders Of The Woo,” in which we take a closer look at what exactly is behind some of these magical lands of enchantment. Today we start with the Krock’s empty lot on Park Ave, in between May and Chandler Streets:

Screen Shot 2015-10-14 at 10.27.49 AM

There’s a bunch of abandoned lots in there totalling six acres of land. All owned by one of Worcester’s wealthiest families – the Krocks. Clearly they have the capital to do something with this, but instead it just sits there. Lets take a look at what’s going on.

To get into the lot you have to enter from the fields by Beaver Brook on Mayfield Street. So we parked by the Big Y parking lot near May Street. This is what you’re greeted by when you enter:

12064167_1640931362856807_547715547_n

Trash. Awesome. And the bushes are filled with……you guessed it

12167079_1640931746190102_493209458_n

soiled diapers for the win!!!

Once you start walking down Mayfield Street, which for some reason abruptly comes to end with concrete barricades, you are greeted by some more high quality Worcester trash:

12166117_1640931366190140_704000069_n

It’s mostly liquor

12064213_1640931389523471_1317585869_n 12167826_1640931392856804_1270621263_n 12083772_1640931422856801_1711977165_n 12167589_1640931429523467_656039233_n

But it’s also sprinkled in with some of Worcester’s finest favorite brand of cigarettes:

12167826_1640931399523470_1440519312_n

Head a little bit in more towards the fence and you can find some real treasures!!

12167281_1640931459523464_1311587229_n 12167565_1640931452856798_330957670_n 12064114_1640931449523465_621921800_n 12167572_1640931442856799_295595438_n 12165801_1640931432856800_1032114672_n

And if these pictures don’t make new businesses want to invest in Worcester, then I don’t know what will!!!

12165956_1640931472856796_639276554_n 12165942_1640931466190130_1021156895_n

Just gazing into there I can see it’s filled with splendor, elegance, and broken dreams.

Once you walk through the giant gap in the fence you will find abandoned lots as far as the eye can see.

12167551_1640931679523442_1570176595_n 12166836_1640931662856777_1752855718_n12167322_1640931479523462_770722730_n

But there is life in this vast wilderness of concrete and asphalt. If life can exist in the Krock lots, then there MUST be life on Jupiter.

12092553_1640931492856794_973840204_n

Beautiful.

According to the Telegram the Krocks were ordered by the courts to cut down all the brush in their empty lot because it’s been used as a homeless encampment. So they did that last year. And as you can see they have clearly done an effective job of getting rid of the encampments.

12064117_1640931596190117_1366050392_n 12166411_1640931576190119_1141665963_n

Back during the Great Depression they used to call encampments like these “Hoovervilles” because President Hoover was such a shitty leader. Therefore I think it’s only appropriate to call these fabulous little villages “Pettyvilles.”

Anyway, we kept walking around to see if there were any more of Tracy Novick’s finest hanging out back here. So we did a little exploring and found out that this is apparently a great place for teenagers to come and do some good ol’ fashioned whip its!!!

12166340_1640931602856783_1925529278_n

After that we stumbled through some more trash

12167722_1640931589523451_852068368_n 12166696_1640931582856785_262060355_n

Apparently this is where people throw their clothes when the for-profit bins are filled on Grafton Street. If I knew this lot had so many hidden nooks and crannies back in high school it would’ve been the ideal spot for some underage drinking and making out!!

Shortly afterwards we came upon the mack daddy of all bum encampments, hidden deep within the brush.

12167402_1640931616190115_1596418339_n

Whoever lives here is here to stay. A true man for all seasons.

The master of the house wasn’t there at the moment for comment. But this is prime real estate if you’re trying to be the sign guy at the corner of Park Ave and Chandler. You have to earn your way to the top though. That’s how nature works.

Also, it appears as if RBG and the hippies do some camping here after a long day of dumpster diving:

12064249_1640931652856778_425454774_n

Here’s what I don’t understand. Why isn’t Mayfield Street a street that you can drive on? It cuts from Chandler Street over to May

12167830_1640931712856772_380604902_n 12167918_1640931696190107_184943970_n

and Beaver Brook park is right there. Well, at least it USED TO BE called Beaver Brook Park. Now it belongs to some guy named Furo.

12063959_1640931719523438_60079814_n

LOL. “City of Worcester, pride in our parks.” Yea, Joe Petty’s showing a lot “pride” in this park. That’s why it belongs to Furo now.

You can tell because Jumpin’ Joe has obviously been “working together” to make sure our parks are looking great once you see how it’s been decorated for the fall harvest.

12166310_1640931732856770_948952952_n 12167938_1640931726190104_138274170_n 12086975_1640931722856771_451411681_n-2

Yea, lots of normal people are gonna wanna bring their kids down to Beaver Brook park for the afternoon.

So what’s the solution to this? Well for one thing Mayfield Street should be a real street that people can drive on. Because it’s a dead end dirt road that leads nowhere, bums are obviously gonna set up shop here, because no one is gonna see them if no one’s driving on that street. As a result we’ve effectively taken six acres of land and permanently handed it over to the derelicts.

Joe Petty could be allocating city resources towards park maintenance instead of spending millions of dollars on City Square so we can build a hotel that no one from Worcester will ever stay in. But then again Joe Petty’s primary concern has never been the citizens of Worcester. He’s focused on giving the impression that Worcester is a yuppie’s paradise when you drive by it on 290. You can’t see Beaver Brook or Park Ave from 290, so fuck it.

Lastly we could actually hold the Krocks responsible for this. Why is the City Council just COOL with this eyesore? It’s been abandoned for as long as I can remember, and we just allow the richest family in the city to keep this bum magnet going. Here’s what you do. The Krocks live on Salisbury Street, right after the fork with Forest Street. They have that gate on the right that leads to their eight acre $1.5 million mansion. The city needs to call up some teamsters and have a bread truck “break down” in front of their house. If they wanna get that bread truck towed, they’re gonna need to call in some heavy machinery from out of state. And that’s gonna take some time. Unless of course the Krocks clean their shit up and sell their lot to some developer who will actually make it look like it’s not a Holiday Inn Express for drug addicts.

So there’s our first installment of “Wonders Of The Woo.” If you have any suggestions for our next Turtleboy Investigates, message us and let us know. It doesn’t have to be contained to Worcester though. If it’s close and it’s gross, we’ll come check it out. If you live in some dump like Fall River or Springfield, feel free to take your own pictures and send them to us and we’ll add the Turtleboy commentary. Now buy a hoodie before it gets cold out!!!

This city has a solution that works every time!

Send the boy scouts in to clean up everyone else’s shit !! Nothing pisses me off more than when I see boy scouts out cleaning up neighborhoods, while the friggon slobs who threw their shit in the street sit on their porches and watch the little suckers pick up their nasty shit!

THE BOYSCOUTS AND THIS “EARTH DAY” CRAPOLA should not be picking up peoples trash they throw out their doors and windows! Hold these pigs accountable and fine them for littering…the city has cameras everyone, they know what is going on. Like the corner of Hudson and Shamut St. Every day there is a another couch or old tv dumped at the corner….or some other LARGE trash. Twice i have rode by and so the filthy bastards unloading the car. Both times is was the same 4-5 muslim men dumping their shit on the people of worcester! Yes they were muslims!!

If you are looking for an “urban” lot, try the corner of plantation st and Caroline st. I am not sure how you can access it now. (we used to enter it from Cohasset St.) I am not sure who or what lives on that lot now. Check out Google Earth or something similar.

+1 to the Bell Pond area. It was cleaned up a bit years ago but it still looks spooky behind the school.

Here’s an idea for a story. Identify non-profit heads and politicians who live outside of Worcester, and yet advocate positions that make life ugly for city residents. Take photos of their glorious Millis and Newton residences and set up panhandlers on their streets and report on the reactions. This would be huge!

The woods surrounding Bell Pond that are also behind East Park… Homeless camp city there too.

I’m surprised you didn’t step on any needles…

The reason the Krocks get away with this is all the property they own on Main St. The last time the city got tough with them, they illegally knocked down a few buildings to build parking lots, and happily paid the fine.

For the record, the previous CM and the City Council have been working to fix Mayfield St. It’s not a through street because it is a private way. They also don’t want a through street next to 2 little league fields, due to asshats looking for shortcuts to speed through.

The paving that extends from Chandler St. halfway down Mayfield was done with the cooperation and money from the abutter, Webster 5, per city ordinance for a private way. The Kricks refuse to do the same for the rest of Mayfield.

As for the abandoned lots, they are all brown fields, which would require significant clean up before building. After they lost the Big Y development to May St, they refused to develop the lots. Why? Guess.

Every cleanup of the Mayfield sites come at a cost- it takes a few years of legal battles to get one year of cooperation.

I got the fuck out of Worcester years ago. Building the parks is key. I lived in a tiny Midwestern town with a huge meth problem and they are still better than Woo because they put a crap ton of money into a paved rail trail, a heated bathroom/water stop and multiple restrooms and park decorations and maintenance. It’s the best town ever. They have a few big hotels because they are a dual college town with schools similar to Woo State and WPI and almost identical in rankings but they don’t try to be a big city. They accept who they are and build on that. Worcester thinks it’s fucking Boston or NYC. Fuck that. Maybe you could if you’d let go of your ego and actually learn how to build a city.

First, too bad that area has become that way for the reasons they have-such as neglect, people being slobs, etc…-as it used to be a decent area.

Second, hopefully, this series gets leaders, residents, owners of the land, and the community to improve areas of the city.

Third, to the person who commented, “You can fight your losing battle with demographics, or you can move somewhere where the prices discriminate, so you don’t have to.”, that is still you or anyone else who does it for that reason, discriminating. You may as well as have commented, …move somewhere where the prices discriminate, so you don’t appear to do so.

Thoughts on next one? My god the options are endless. A couple I can think of off the top of my head are the new “park” where Coes Knife used to be. Wtf is going on with that shit hole? Built a park that no one can ever go to and proceed to never maintain the land again? Sounds pretty Worcester to me.
What’s up with the old Big D supermarket on Mill St too? Why does everything just get abandoned around here and no one is responsible.
And an eye sore you’d only know about if you drove by: 8 Stearns St. Worcester
Seriously. Drive by this beautiful manse. The shit you see has been there for weeks, if not months. To steal from John Oliver, how on earth is this still a thing? Honestly, I put my trash out the night before pick up and I get a ticket, and these winners are allowed to do this shit. Drive by and you’ll see what I’m talking about. Worcester’s finest.

    We live in a democracy.

You blame Joe Petty, but Petty didn’t put the trash and make all of those places disgusting-
The citizenry of worcester did. They throw used diapers in public spaces, they don’t take care of their city, they throw trash everywhere, and then, when someone comes to their house and tells them to vote for Joe Petty for more of the same (they must be blind) they vote for him, they vote for drug addicts begging at every street corner.

Joe Petty is part of the problem, but he is only a symptom of the greater social dysfunction of worcesterites. Worcester has a shitty government because it is full of stupid, ignorant people. Good lucking solving this as anyone with a brain is getting the hell out of worcester as soon as they are able, and the citizens of Worcester, shipped in from the movie Idiocracy, will continue to make more of themselves and continue to not give a fuck about being the human equivalent of pigs rolling in their own shit.

You can fight your losing battle with demographics, or you can move somewhere where the prices discriminate, so you don’t have to.

Well said, at this point it’s not worth fixing the woo up. Lets just try to keep those people there so they don’t take over other cities too.
