Last week a body was found inside a burned out car on Swan Avenue in Worcester. Although the story was shocking, the location was not. Because if there were one place in Worcester you would expect someone to burn a car with a dead body in it, it’s Swan Avenue. Many Worcesterites have lived their whole lives without driving this 1.5 mile long street, because it’s a terrible dirt road. If it were paved then everyone and their mother would be using it to avoid Webster Square, because it brings you from Mill Street to Worcester’s most pothole ridden road – Wildwood Ave. So let’s explore Swan Ave in today’s Wonders of the Woo, and find out why it’s Worcester’s go to destination for destroying evidence and discarding trash.

The whole area between Goddard Memorial Drive and Mill Street is a huge wooded area. But there’s tons of random homes in there that you’d never know existed. It’s all part of Worcester’s biggest hill – Airport Hill. It starts off down near the old Mill Swan Elementary School:

And ends up here on Wildwood:

12207735_1648451528771457_1048780763_n

The road starts off smoothly

12207988_1648451652104778_795292868_n

But as you go up it turns into some backwoods country road that will make you say – “this is Worcester?”

12233025_1648451635438113_490479950_n

Once you get to the Williamsburg projects the road swings to the right and gets very narrow.

12212078_1648451622104781_434712011_n

This is where you wanna go to drop a body. You’ll see a random gate that would bring you over towards Fourth Street.

12231684_1648451625438114_158425706_n

This might look like a good place to burn a car or some other evidence, but you still need to go up more until you get to this random little drop off point where Williamsburg’s finest toss their trash and unregistered vehicles:

12226735_1648451612104782_1910443982_n

You can find some real treasures here, such as mattresses, VHS tapes (remember VHS tapes)

12233561_1648451602104783_331823687_n

Pillows, trash, paint cans

12212258_1648451598771450_76509445_n

Doors

12231481_1648451592104784_1323883987_n

Anything made of wood

12226806_1648451605438116_760255853_n

And if you’ve ever asked yourself, “What am I supposed to do with my old computer when I get a new one?”, the answer is apparently, toss it on Swan Ave.

12212476_1648451595438117_623780259_n

Honestly, this torched vehicle is far from the first to be set on fire on Swan Ave. Ask anyone who lives over on one of Passway’s 3-6 knows that fires aren’t exactly a rare occurrence. I’ve gone up and down this street plenty of times before and there’s always a new collection of trash or charcoal Corollas no matter the season.

It’s too bad because the place really is one of Worcester’s hidden gems.

12231288_1648451578771452_1229781401_n

Once you get to the top of the hill there’s a hiking trail that will bring you alongside these big ass cliffs for a couple of miles before dumping you off at Logan Field on Mill Street.

12231470_1648451575438119_1241346249_n

But Swan Road ends up going to the left where it might look nice from time to time

12207941_1648451538771456_1023581609_n

But whenever there’s a pullover spot you will pretty much be guaranteed to find more piles of trash

12231112_1648451562104787_1781489759_n

12226738_1648451542104789_1985314301_n

It was right around here somewhere that the found the dead body in the car last week. Oh yea, and what kind of savage throws out a perfectly good VHS of Varsity Blues?

12212145_1648451548771455_1654638205_n

Probably the same nudnik that won this award back in ought one

12212325_1648451545438122_90057635_n

Finally it drops you off onto Wildwood Ave with some may argue is actually in worse condition than Swan Ave.

12231355_1648451532104790_448882324_n

Here’s my question for the city of Worcester – is Swan Ave a real street that we’re supposed to care about, or is it just a place to destroy evidence and get rid of appliances? Inquiring minds want to know. Hey Jumpin’ Joe Petty, get off your ass and have someone pick this shit up!!

Its been years since Mr Boudillion updated his page but its a great site. Tons of local natural/native/historical pics, histories (that he researches fully before posting) and natural land formations from all over the state.

Really is a great source of info.

Turtleboy knows all about illegal dumping, though he prefers to leave the city limits to do his. I believe he prefers to dump his old televisions and other hazardous waste in the woods of Leicester. Bragged about it right on the very pages of this blog, he did. Maybe the city should check the names on the trash up on Swan, just to be sure.

Might want to collect your computer before the cops find all your child porn. Though maybe you can share a cell with your buddy Deb’s boys.

This is what drives me nuts most about Worcester. City Hall has a “live free or die” attitude when it comes to private roads falling to shit, decrepit homes, code violations, overgrown lots, and generally uglyass pieces of real estate. Look, if Jumpin’ Joe and Big Ed want to keep purporting that they’re helping the most disadvantaged in this city, then clean the fucking place up, work harder and faster on City Square, and find capable developers to reuse perfectly good slices of real estate. Hell, I’ll do it myself– just reroute those funds from Mosaic and I’ll make this a decent place to live where everyone will be so content that they won’t have to use taxpayer dollars to figure out whose feelings are hurt.
Too bad that will never happen because liberals are perfectly content living in their own turds if it means there won’t be an ounce of that evil gentrification.
God forbid middle class people move into this city and start taking care of their property.

This is so incredibly sad. I lived on Swan Ave, and the city refused to take care of any of it. The neighbors were going to try to go in together to fix the road, as a HUGE sink hole developed right after the nursing home and swallowed a few car axles. Alas, it would have cost an insane amount of money for the residents, so no fixing. There are families and children living on that street. It’s such a shame…

What is with all of these wooded and semi wooded areas around Worcester with piles and piles of garbage? I could be wrong, but I honestly believe the reason for this might have to do with the city really restrictive recycling program. You’re not allowed to throw away certain objects in the trash unless you schedule a ‘special’ pick up – which is either inconvenient or costs you more money.

Well, every mayor since Levy has touted how those fucking yellow bags have increased recycling and reduced the amount of trash.

They just try to ignore that, instead of the trash going into a landfill, it’s being dumped all over the city.

    • Fillet o fish
      November 10, 2015 at 5:54 am

Bingo Dm! THAT’S exactly the reason. But if you recall, the yellow bag fee was supposed to supplement the pick up of such items, even BEFORE they raised the yellow bag fee. What happened and where does this money go now? If you could get this stuff picked up for free, why would you risk a $10,000 fine for illegal dumping?

You obviously aren’t familiar with the trick of hiding your garbage in the recycle bin.

        November 11, 2015 at 1:07 pm

Of course I am. But how do you hide tires, large paint buckets, and an entire PC tower in the recycling bin? XD

Looks like a setting straight out of an episode of Forensic Files.

I can see the narration right now…

“On a hot, August morning in Worcester, Massachusetts, a neighbor walking his dog came upon a gruesome discovery. The decomposed body of a young woman…”

It takes a smart person to illegally dump trash with your name on it.
