Most of the time when we blog about rappers on Turtleboy it’s because 860 Money Crew dropped another track about 2$moke getting arrested in Danielson. That’s because we like to highlight terrible rap as a reminder of why you should dissuade your child when they tell you they wanna be a rapper. That’s about to change.

This is Joyner Lucas out of THE Worcester South High School:

Where we didn’t have walls or usable toilets, but we did have keg parties at the Rez and half the people who graduated said they were gonna grow up to be rappers in the high school yearbook.

Joyner Lucas represents the 0.0000001% of all Worcester “rappers” who ended up attaining an actual paying career rapping. He’s an amazingly talented artist, and that’s not something I say about rappers very often. Don’t get me wrong, I grew up on hip-hop. I’m just not into Drake and Lil Wayne and all this new age shit that sounds exactly the same. I’m into Dr. Dre and Big L and the Lost Boys. Ya know, good rap.

The grassroots star is one of the biggest rising names in the industry, with millions of followers on social media, and for good reason. His latest video has everyone buzzing because it’s amazing. It’s honestly one of the best videos I’ve ever seen. It’s called “I’m not racist” and features a Trump supporter and a black lives matter dude sitting at a table yelling and swearig at each other. You gotta watch it to understand just how well this is done:

A fucking plus. The only thing I’d change is the hug at the end.

I feel like by the end both had had their say, they completely hated everything the other person stood for, but they now understood where the other one was coming from and had developed a mutual respect for one another. However, they should’ve stared each other down and shaken hands because despite their differences they’re both still hardos.

Then again my rapping acumen involves destroying Tony Deyoung in Turtleboy Live freestyles, so what do I know?

Naturally this video has offended many, many idiots who didn’t understand it:

Notice that many of the people who don’t like the video think exactly like the guy in the video. They’re divisive, they refuse to acknowledge anyone else’s world view as legitimate. They see one side as completely right and the other as completely wrong. The whole point of the video is NOT to be like either guy in the video.

Then you got Becky chiming in, and lecturing Joyner Lucas, a black man, about how he doesn’t know enough about the struggles of black people:

Friggin wypipo man. Be whiter….

You can’t.

It’s OK though because she’s going to university and watches rap videos, so she’s got racism all figured out.

“This rap was a white guy throwing down oppressive slurs, disgusting stereotypes and justification of slavery, mass incarceration & the unjustified killing of black men by police officers.”

Yea, no shit Becky. That was literally the whole point. Highlighting the radical fringe in America that are currently controlling both political parties.

Let me sum it up for you Jessie Lynn:

  • The point of this video is not about pushing any particular political agenda.
  • The point of this video is to show people the dangers of subscribing to fringe politics on either side.
  • The point of this video is to teach people how ugly you look when you’re this angry.
  • The point of this video is that people don’t have to find common ground to agree to respect someone else’s view of the world.
  • The point of this video is that both people got the way they were by refusing to engage with people who think differently from them, only to find out that the root of their concerns were reasonable when they laid it all out on the table one on one.

“You’re scared to lose your life so you take mine, I love and hate you at the same time”

That’s one of the best lines I’ve ever heard.

It’s just so refreshing because 99% of rap is just chains, skinny jeans, and bullshit nowadays. Then Joyner Lucas comes along with this thought provoking, politically charged work of art, AND the rapping and beats themselves were better than anything Drake has ever put out. Ever.

Just another Worcester South graduate out there dominating the world. It’s what we do. Mrs. Binienda approves.

Joshua Shipp makes some fair points brought to mind when the cia brought crack cocaine into the ghettos to sabotage

But a culture has to evolve past what its enemies envision/frame it

and that is exactly why this artist is so great in transcending the cultural norm
no small feat and nearly impossible actually for a super long time many have tried valiantly and not gotten anywhere for years

the vid they let the white guy be super angry and violent and make such heavy mean points whereas the black guy was more a lamb to that lion, didn’t make many strong points to defend or offend.. way unbalanced

“Don’t get me wrong, I grew up on hip-hop. I’m just not into Drake and Lil Wayne and all this new age shit that sounds exactly the same. I’m into Dr. Dre and Big L and the Lost Boys. Ya know, good rap.”

    cheers
NWA era for me and Eminem too

I can’t believe people listen to Lil Wayne etc it’s like they’re soulless robot sheep for corporate hip hop

Will your love for Mrs. Binienda keep you from reporting on the dishonesty, nepotism, failing Principals, student violence, and bullying taking place in the WPS on a daily basis? Your admiration for her is noble, but it destroys the anonymity you think you possess. She knows you. She has named you. And she has said, “That’s Turtleboy. He’s on MY SIDE.” No word on her from TBS about how she’s set up shop at North High.

Don’t get me wrong….she deserves praise. Not ONE Superintendent would EVER set up office at North High to oversee the turmoil there, but SHE did. What Im saying is that a lot of games are still being played in Worcester, and should something surface, I’m questioning how TBS would report it if it didn’t show the Superintendent in a good light. Would you ever go all Michael Gaffney on her?

Very well done and great to see it from a local! People will bitch because it depicts something most are no longer interested in – a dialogue.

if that is your idea of a dialogue, you are the problem

Proud to say I attended good ole’ South high with this man back in the day (class of 07). Saw him at the palladium a few months back and was blown away by his love and devotion to this city. Glad to see one of our own make it and not resort to the level of ridiculous most modern rappers do. His entire album was truly great in the eyes of any true hip-hop fan and is well worth a listen. He addresses not only our current political climate but a large swath of other pertinent topics such as poverty depression and suicide and all from a standpoint you know is authentic and genuine. His music videos are often above and beyond anything out right now in terms of scope and the message they create a visual for. Keep up doing the great work and representing this great city and you will always have a fan in me Joyner.

I feel the need to add that while we attended school together we were never friends and actually didn’t get along very well at all. However that was 10 years ago and I do not let any of that stop me from giving this man and his actions the respect they deserve.

Kudos to Joyner Lucas, he has used his considerable talent to create a thought provoking piece of art.
    And that is the problem.
By provoking thoughts in some people he creates frustration, and anger. Anger is a familiar “feeling” and “feelings” are all some people base their opinions on. Our headlines and airwaves are pontificate and seek to have their “feelings” validated. (e.g. “I feel very strongly that mustard belongs on hot dogs and no one should ever put Ketchup on hot dogs!!!”)
Real thinking is scarce, more rare than talented artists.

you did say “artist” … ba ha ha ha ha… wtf…. we’re headed back to the stone age.

Michelangelo was an artist creating timeless art with crude tools, pains taking work.

Now in this age with every tool imaginable at ones disposal “artist” refers to a young black man screaming I’m a victim and I’m afraid of the police, knocking a fat white man’s hat off his head and flipping tables over.

That isn’t art that is every day behavior by young men of color, only thing missing was a weapon and robbery, arrest, public defender and dindu nothin defence

Now in this age with every tool imaginable at YOUR disposal, you still somehow typed “pains taking” and hit submit like you actually knew what the fuck you were typing. I dare you to name one fucking piece of work by Michelangelo, I would bet you 3 narcans if I ask you why you like Michelangelo tomorrow your answer would be “because he’s the coolest turtle!”. It also appears you are either racist or only watched half the video, because there is also a white man yelling a whole bunch of ignorant things at a black man that you seemed to have no problem with. The whole point was to show the extremes on BOTH sides and create a DIALOGUE between the two to help us understand our differences, why does it not surprise me your simple ass mind never grasped that concept. If you honestly believe the last line of your comment at all then you ma’am are part of the problem and wish you nothing but legos in the path of your bare feet for eternity.
