For all you whiny losers out there who wanna complain about how unfair the system is instead of doing something to get your ass in gear, here’s the feel good story of the day for you:

WHDHMichael Vaudreuil hopes anyone who hits rock bottom hears his story. “You go through life and you say, ‘someday I’m going do this. I’m going do that,’ and very often in life you’re hit with a curveball that kind of throws you off track.”

It was the recession that threw Vaudreuil off track. “It left our heads spinning. It happened so fast.”

In 2007, his plastering business went under. Within six months, so did everything else. “We lost our home, bankruptcy, and our personal vehicle… decimation was completed. I was just a shell of a person at that time.”

He took the only job he could find, a custodian at Worcester Polytechnic Institute. To cut the boredom, he signed up for a tuition-free class WPI offers employees. That brought him to a new world, and the lab where he designed his own prototype of a reusable dust fuel cartridge. After eight years of classes all day and cleaning all night, Vaudreuil now emerges a mechanical engineer. He graduates Saturday, May 14th, with a class of students less than half his age. “It’s a lot. It’s a lot to comprehend,” says his wife, Joyce.

He not only gets a diploma, but hopes for a new job, and a life the Vaudreuils dreamed might happen someday. “Very few times do you ever get to experience a real ‘someday,’” says Vaudreuil. “And so it feels like, welcome to my ‘someday.’”

God bless Michael Vaudreuil. The man is Worcester’s version of Good Will Hunting. Ladies and gentlemen, this is what a winner looks like. In our last blog we saw whiny parents complaining about how life wasn’t fair. And it’s not. It sucks this guy lost his home during the Great Recession. But instead of occupying Wall Street or blaming Big Oil or whoever else for the fact that his business failed, Mike Vaudreuil hiked up his bootstraps and did something about it. He took a job that he probably felt was beneath him. He took advantage of a great opportunity to take classes in his limited free time for free. And now he’s got a degree from a GREAT school, and he’s inventing things and he’ll probably be better off than he was before the recession hit.

I remember back during the Presidential elections in 2008 and 2012 this was a hot topic. People were losing their jobs, businesses, and homes. Politicians capitalized on it by blaming everything on banks and rich people for rigging the system. People like Liz Warren pointed the fingers at JP Morgan instead of her $400,000 salary for doing nothing. But the beauty of the American system is that anything is possible if you play your cards right. And this guy just proved it.

Meanwhile we have kids all over college campuses whining about the price of their private liberal arts college as they pursue their degree in Gender Studies. But these buttnuts would NEVER do what this guy did because they think being a janitor is beneath them. They shouldn’t have to work their way through college. Things should be handed to them. College should be free.

This guy is the American dream, and I assume he reads Turtleboy Sports because he is a winner. Winners only at Turtleboy Sports.

P.S. This is why WPI is my favorite college in Worcester. While Worcester State and Clark are hiring losers like Sonya Conner who are brainwashing the next generation of whiners, WPI is hiring guys like this who will change the world.

WPI grad here. If there is one thing I enjoy about my alma mater, it’s that we make the news with these types of stories, and not the Hampshiresque ones. Engineers don’t have time for all the SJW baloney.

Bobnmic, I don’t know this man. My imposter is back tonight. Even if everything my imposter said is/was true, this guy really dug himself out of a hole by hard work and applying himself, and for that I have respect for him. We all do stupid shit from time to time, but it appears this guy took life by the horns, and it’s made him a better person for it. Congratulations Mike. Good luck in your inevitable job search. Whomever is saying they are me is a fuckin ass hole. Who does that shit?

My niece graduated from WPI yesterday and I am glad to say I witnessed Mike receiving his diploma. America is all about 2nd chances and 2nd careers.

As Actress Erin Cummins said “At the end of the day, you are solely responsible for your success and your failure. And the sooner you realize that, you accept that, and integrate that into your work ethic, you will start being successful. As long as you blame others for the reason you aren’t where you want to be, you will always be a failure.”

Unfortunately the political left for the last 50 years has been beating the drum that hard work isn’t the key to success it is skin color, where you were born, how wealthy your family is/was, how lucky you are and a thousand other reasons. Finally in 2012 President Obama said “If you’ve got a business — you didn’t build that. Somebody else made that happen.” But without citizens who work hard and are successful there wouldn’t be a US government.

The real story is more like he had a successful plastering company in the 90’s and then he started to live beyond his means buying expensive houses, boats and toys. Acting like the rock star he thought he was he started snorting grams of coke and having Bloody Marys for breakfast. After the IRS caught up with him and the bank repoed everything due to default the only job anyone would trust him to do is scrub toilets.

Even if it is true, he didn’t kick back and collect welfare. Remember, this is Massachusetts where you can collect more than 15 bucks an hour by sitting on your ass.

I myself would never take a job as a janitor or any other job unless of course it’s to be Mayor of a city because I’m special!

  • Kevin Lynch

For one, janitor is way better than plasterer. Congrats to this man for his hard work. He was fortunate to receive free tuition. I know a few who take advantage of such perks as they are very good.

Problem is that there are only so many openings for janitor. The real problem is people like turtleboy who sees the world from a small bubble. Turtleboy earns a living bashing hoe people look because he is a sissy jogger.

The great recession took millions down and kept them down with no such opportunities such as a janitor job at a college which most people in construction would give their right arm for such an opportunity

As a double WPI alumna, I’m so proud of this gentleman, and of my alma mater for continuing to offer free classes (note that books are NOT free, and very costly) for its employees, no matter now menial their jobs are. My husband and I each got graduate degrees from WPI “for free,” but we worked all day (me at WPI running their website for 10 years) and went to classes at night. America is the land of opportunity, but you there is no substitute for hard work – Carpe Diem and make something of yourself like this guy, kids!

Here’s what BHO and HRC would say about this story: “You didn’t build that!”even though clearly he did. Self reliance and personal responsibility is foreign to the socialist left. Great job to Michael and to WPI for creating opportunities.
