Fitchburg Sentinel: Mayor Dean Mazzarella is upset about the decision to not allow local access broadcasters to show Saturday’s Central-Western Massachusetts state semifinals on their airwaves, two of which occur at Leominster’s Doyle Field. Shortly after the Sentinel & Enterprise posted a story reporting on the television ban that appeared in Friday’s edition, the mayor took to Facebook to protest the decision.
On Friday, Mazzarella said that in the future the city “will make absolutely sure that they sign a contract” that will allow the games to be broadcast locally. Due to a contract between the Mass. Interscholastic Athletic Association and PlayOn! Sports — an organization that streams events for a fee on the Internet — local coverage of the game at Doyle Field has been blacked out.
What do you know, the MIAA are being a bunch of a-holes again. Never saw that one coming.
This is the same organization that literally made a bunch of high school kids choose between playing in the District Championship baseball game and taking the SAT’s, after refusing to schedule the game around that test. But, fuck going to college though right? The MIAA doesn’t have to schedule games around stupid stuff like the SAT’s.
This is the same organization that didn’t allow two Beverly lacrosse players to play in the State Championship because they smoked a cigar to celebrate their graduation. Because God forbid 18 year olds celebrate a major life event. That’s against the rules!!!
Have you ever seen anything more corrupt than this? Fitchburg played in the state semifinal football match and no one could watch it because Fitchburg Access TV didn’t bribe the MIAA with enough money. That’s what this basically came down to. PlayOn Sports charges people ten freaking bucks to watch a God damn high school football game. You gotta be a special kind of sucker to pay $10 to watch a high school football game on the internet.
My question is, when are athletic directors around here gonna grow a sack and tell the MIAA to go fuck themselves? What do they get from the MIAA? When a school makes a district tournament in basketball or football who makes money off the gates? Not the schools themselves. Nope. It goes right to Franklin so the MIAA can pay a bunch of self-righteous dooshnozzles three figure salaries. Here’s their tax return from last year:
Yup, the MIAA Executive Director Richard Neal made $213,290 last year. His salary comes directly from a bunch of schools who literally pay him to fuck them over time and time again. Their salaries are financed by you as a taxpayer, you again with the user fees you have to pay for your kid to play sports, and you again for the $10 privilege of watching your kid perform in district tournament games.
When are schools gonna learn? You don’t have to be a part of this shitty, corrupt organization of empty suits. What do they do for you? Schedule your tournament games? Athletic directors can do that too. Collect gate receipts? You can collect it and even KEEP the money too? But hey, if you’re looking to just piss your money away then feel free to join the TIAA – Turtleboy Interscholastic Athletic Association. We’ll only take half your money and you can have whoever you want to film the game. It’s a win, win.
And I just wanna say that I don’t live in Leominster, but after reading what their mayor Dean Mazzarella wrote on Facebook, I kind of wish I did. Because being a politically correct goober who tows the company line is pretty much par for the course for politicians. But not Dean. This guy’s actually got a sack, and I can’t help but respect the hell out of that. Plus he loves babies and so do I!!!
He didn’t stop there either:
He’s right. Picture telling your grandpa that he has to pay $9.95 to stream a high school football game. Do you understand how far above his pay grade that would be? First you have to explain to them what the internet is. That’s gonna take at least 24 hours. Then you have to tell him what “streaming” means. Add on another 12 hours. Then you have to explain to him what a credit card is AND how to use it to pay for something online if he wants to pay that money to watch a HIGH SCHOOL FOOTBALL GAME!! The whole process will take at least a week.
Then my boy Dean came up with a crafty way to get back at the MIAA:
See that? That’s why I would vote for this guy for President. You wanna charge old people who can’t drive to Doyle Field to watch the game? Fine, game on. Special MIAA parking rate for a bargain basement price of $9.95 an hour. Classic.
Look, the mayor is right. I grew up in a town right outside of Fitchburg and Leominster. There isn’t a bigger rivalry in the history of sports. I’m not even kidding. If you went to Fitchburg you can’t even consider buying a house in Leominster because then you’d have to do the unthinkable – watch your son or daughter wear blue instead of red when they get to high school. Football is all these people have. Old people and families in these cities literally watch these games on TV like it’s the God damn Super Bowl. And they couldn’t today because the MIAA are a bunch of crooks.
If it makes the residents of Fitchburg who couldn’t watch the game feel better they didn’t have to watch Fitchburg lose 10-7 to Longmeadow.
At least Dean Mazzarella is keeping it real.
