A Virginia high school released a statement on Wednesday claiming the leader of its state championship football team resigned to focus more time on his family, but the coach is claiming administrators didn’t renew his contract for running up the score.

The bizarre tale of Virginia Beach (Va.) Bishop Sullivan Catholic High football coach Carl Turner’s departure ischronicled in The Virginian-Pilot, and the only certainty at this point is that the man who led the Crusaders to a Virginia Independent Schools Athletic Association Division 2 state championship this past fall is out of a job.

Turner told the paper he received a text message Wednesday from BSCHS athletic director Corey Mistretta at 6:30 a.m. and had an ominous feeling about his future. “Today’s my day,” he reportedly thought. A few hours later the school released this statement.

“Coach Carl Turner has decided to step down from his position as head football coach at Bishop Sullivan Catholic High School. Coach Turner expressed that he would like to spend more quality time with his family, enjoy watching his son play college football and focus on his professional career.”

Turner’s son Pierce was an All-State senior linebacker this past fall, when his father captured VISAA Division II Coach of the Year honors. While Pierce has received interest from several Division I schools, Carl wasn’t prepared to give up his coaching reins.

“When I got into (Principal Dennis) Price’s office, he looked at me and said, ‘We’re not going to renew your contract,'” Turner told the paper. “I asked why, and he said ‘Because we told you not to run the score up and you chose to run the score up on teams.'”

Is anyone really surprised with stories like this? It’s 2014. You can’t be mean in 2014. You have to be nice to everyone. Every game has to be really close so that no one’s feelings get hurt. Because having your feelings hurt is literally the worst thing that can ever happen to a human being. Ever. It’s worse than being born in a North Korean work camp. Way worse. Sports aren’t something you’re supposed to try your best at. It’s something that has to be carefully manipulated by the coaches so that no one’s feelings get hurt. Do you think America became the greatest country on Earth by running up the score? Nope. We became great because we made sure we were only a little bit better than everyone else. We don’t want to hurt other countries feelings. That would make them sad.

Sure, I realize that winning by 27 points isn’t THAT much, but it’s still way too much. You shouldn’t be allowed to win by more than 10. Yea, the other team might be able to come back if you don’t keep the petal to the medal on offense, but I’d rather lose than hurt someone’s feelings. After all, sports isn’t about winning and losing. No one learns anything from losing. We need more ties. Or just don’t keep score at all. Whatever saves people from having their feelings hurt.

Feel free to share your thoughts to keep the conversation going.

Didn’t the Colts just come back from 28 points down? A professional sports team against a defense that is (arguably) better than one in Division II? Aren’t these high school kids with the potential to fold at any point and let a losing team back into the game? So we tell kids to not quit until the job is done, but in sports you are supposed to just lay back and wait for the other team to win? This is what I loved about coaching track. You are up against the clock, nothing else. If you happen to annihilate another team, then that is just an awesome addition to it.
