Any Sympathy I Had For Stop N Shop Workers Is Gone After The Publicly Shamed And Harassed Ray Bourque For Buying Food

To read this blog on our ad free website click here

People have asked us to blog about the Stop n Shop strike that started last week. Personally, I try not to get involved in situations like this because it’s more complicated than meets the eye, and I don’t know all the details. I generally, as a default, usually side with labor, unless they give me a reason not to. And harassing and publicly shaming Bruins legend Ray Bourque for buying food in North Andover is one of those reasons:

The real crime here is that anyone would ever shop at Stop n Shop to begin with when Market Basket is a thing that exists.

These seem like perfectly reasonable responses:

“Now my 300 autographs I got when I played against Chris are worthless.”

Tell us more about the glory days bro. We’re all very impressed. Almost as impressed as the fact that you’re a grown ass man who wears flat brimmed hats, can shoot a frisbee, and carry a gun in your crotch.

Someone pointed out that publicly shaming people probably isn’t the most effective way to get your point across, but Christine Fontanez disagreed.

Yea, no. You could’ve posted a video of anyone shopping there, and you chose Ray Bourque because he’s famous. Customers who cross picket lines aren’t scabs; replacement workers are. But you’re not shaming them, just a private citizen trying to buy overpriced food at a shitty supermarket.

And all these yahoos calling him a “scab,” have no idea what that word means. Scabs are replacement workers who take your job when you’re on strike. They undermine the strike. Ray Bourque is a customer, and you don’t treat customers like that. Ever. What happens when the strike ends and you see him in the store? Whatever your salary was was paid for by people like him.

Just to be clear, I would not have done this if I were Ray Bourque, especially when there are other places to shop. But when Market Basket workers went on strike a few years ago it worked, specifically because they didn’t do stuff like this. They stood there, smiled, and waved. The real problem aren’t the customers, it’s your fellow workers inside stocking the shelves and undermining your strike.

And no, your labor dispute has nothing to do with the fact that he was in a union too. Ray Bourque was in the top .01% of people in the world at playing hockey. He had a unique talent that couldn’t be replaced. His labor was valuable and rare, whereas your’s is replaceable. I also don’t remember seeing Stop n Shop workers standing on picket lines in front of any other striking workers recently, yet they want everyone else in a union to join their’s. Sorry, but that’s a hard pass on that one guys.

Joke will be on these unskilled shrieking 80 IQ fucksticks when their ‘jobs’ are replaced by automation shortly. Complete and utter economic illiteracy happens to be just one of the many intellectual blind spots of fat lazy union trash. Your typical union argument goes something like this…HEY NO FUCK YOU DO WHAT I WANT OR I’LL SCREAM HOLLER CALL YOU A SCAB AND MAKE PATHETIC SOPHOMORIC THREATS ABOUT KICKING YOUR ASS. Not sure which is lower…your level of class or your deductive reasoning skills. Either way it is a race to the bottom, much like your life has been since you either got knocked up out of wedlock or knocked someone up out of wedlock. If you had any kind of marketable skill, I could sympathize. You do realize high school kids can do your ‘job’. No one ever said you should raise a family working at a grocery store or fast food restaurant. Stop and Shop is overpriced. WalMart is not. The average person likes to save money. Squeal like pigs all you want, but facts are facts. Human nature is human nature.

I never like to feel like I have to do something but Liz Warren demanding that Stop & Shop shoppers not cross the line has forced me to sign up for Peapod. I’d forgotten about the strike. They yelled as I approached the door and told me to go to Big Y (which is expensive AF). Do what you gotta do, but don’t tell me where to shop, and don’t you want a job to go back to when all of this is over? I went to Target instead.

Going to disagree with you on this one, MVTB.
Ray B even thought better of what happened and sent out an apology.
This contract is horrible. Some might say that some of it only affects new hires but guess what? You ratify it and they start brooming long time employees in favor of bringing in newer, cheaper fresh meat. The turnover would be almost immediate.
These employees are your friends and neighbors. Try not shitting on them. Unions help all of us to have better working conditions, whether your place is organized or not. Sometimes the prospect of a union coming in is enough to encourage an employer to treat their help better.

    April 15, 2019 at 5:58 pm

No one gives a fuck what you did in high school or how “tough” had it . Ray Borque is wrong for crossing that line when he belonged to a union himself. The only way to negotiate better wages and fair prices is for both the worker and consumer to take a stand. Don’t work for a company that is eroding workers benefits and earned entitlements. Not millennial entitlements, EARNED entitlements. Don’t vote with your spending to endorse these companies that don’t value their workers. It’s that simple. It’s the only way to negotiate in a free market system. And as for unions lobbying with politicians, if they should be banned fro . lobbying then so shouldn’t every industry and special interest. These people are taking a stand to negotiate better terms for themselves and you’re shitting on them. Probably because the writer is female that anonymously blogs with her free time. Tough racket. I’m conservative and I think it’s pretty disgusting that we would shame other citizens for taking a stand for themselves. Disgusting. And I got news for you, nobody is going to hire your two truck construction company to build skyscrapers. So get over the fuck the union thing you bitter broken miserably married stooges

    • Whiny union members
      April 15, 2019 at 6:38 pm

There are plenty of skyscrapers built by non union companies.
Look at the big dig disaster and the shoddy work and stealing done by all those union companies. Nuff said.

    • Fred
      April 15, 2019 at 7:23 pm

You are a moron. Really “fair prices for both the worker and consumer” . Please tell me. How much should someone who can be replaced by a machine or someone willing to work for minimum wage be paid? And who eats those increased wages?? Certainly not the business owner…they go straight tp the pockets of the consumer. Fuck you and your “fair wages” for one of the only jobs they give to people with downs syndrome.

      • John
        April 15, 2019 at 8:54 pm

Fred, let me explain something to you adult to adult. Unions side with democrats typically because democrats are the only party who is willing to endorse labor unions. I can’t tell you how many union guys have conservative values, socially and economically, and want that to change. However, these people aren’t petitioning the government to force stop and shop to pay them more, they’re protesting their employer to not take away over time, health benefits, annuity, which they’ve paid into every week from their earned wages. Collective bargaining is how a group of employees ask their employer to take less in profit and spread it to the people who help make the business run. Consumers that shop with principle over price in mind ie support local business, or support companies that have a stronghold on the local industry, should expect that they will pay their employees fairly. Because stop n shol being in town knocks out the real prospect of a local person opening a mom and pop and becoming business owners. So the least a consumer can do is side with the labor that works for the company that is so large in the industry. We are all working class people, and by crossing the line to either work or shop, you are saying fuck these people who bag my groceries, stock the shelves, cut my deli meat, clean my aisle spills. Your telling them their worthless because their jobs can be replaced by automation. You’re lacking empathy because it isn’t you. You’re demeaning how they earn a living because it isn’t dirty or physically intensive enough for your approval. You sound like the kind of guy who would be livid when you find out someone that works an easier occupation than you but makes more. Instead of being happy for the next man. You are not thinking it through, your thinking with emotion. If you really feel that way the next time someone cuts your deli meat, or brings your carriage to the carriage area, or bags your groceries, let them know you think they deserve very little and their basically useless. Tell them that yourself, Fred.

        • John
          April 15, 2019 at 9:02 pm

Go tell the kid with down syndrome at stop and shop, to his face, that he should be glad he has an occupation because stop n shop hires the mentally impaired, and you believe he doesn’t deserve the dignity of asking for a raise, or negotiating better terms for himself. Tell him when you look at him all you see is “lucky retard” who should be grateful and keep his head down. But before you do that look in the mirror for two minutes straight and figure out what the fuck it is that made you such a lowlife, anonymous posting internet, miserable, bitter, unfuckable human being. Such a fucking weakling. A coward that has to deny that fundamental truth to go through the day. You scan, subservient minded weak fuck.

Here’s how united airlines did it ,(in bed with the union). Ramp service threatened to strike systemwide; so the company gave in temporarily.
Next, they started replacing the top earners with “temporary part time” workers. Then they outsourced maintenance & ground equipment. Then they had a “reduction in force”….. Layoff, but they hired more temps with no benefits. Then they outsourced lavatory, cabin cleaners and finally; fueling. And the union was fine with all this treachery. MB sells great products and has everything you need in one stop. The hot food takeout is great. Sure you run into the gimmee girls on the 1st. But that’s everywhere.

Unions = Scientology. Crazy whack jobs with low mental ability are easily brainwashed to spout the same union bullshit over and over. Union leadership is just another layer of management that uses the members as pawns to fatten their own pockets – guess how many of the 20 or so UFCW employees(vs members) make over 100k? Guess which union’s receptionist makes over 90k? Guess what percentage of the members make anything close to that? They only serve to protect the lowest common denominator and thank god they’re on the way out across the country.

      • Chris
        April 16, 2019 at 10:19 am

Actually, it’s not true that people want to be a cops or firemen to join unions. They do it for public service. Public sector employees should not be in unions. Pro athletes’ unions don’t collectively bargain for their salaries, since each player signs their own contract. They negotiate the rules for their sport’s leagues.

          April 15, 2019 at 2:57 pm

Anyone that anonymously brags about how much money he has, lives in his elderly parents basement and bags groceries and gets carriages in the parking lot. The reason non-management workers at supermarkets make so little money is because it is a job that a 15 year old with no experience and one day of training can do. Don’t expect to be able to provide for a family doing a job: that customers without any training can do (self service check out), or stocking shelves, or taking milk out of a crate and putting into a cooler. The fact that workers at stop and shop are unionized shows how useless unions are.

I usually agree with the Turtle but not on this one. I’m not union, actually more anti-union but someone close to me is not. Out of respect for them, and respect for the fact that these folks are not paid well but are great at the S&S we use, I am respecting their lines and feel others should. The fact that the S&S management is acting stupidly and blatantly lying also makes it an easier choice. Yes, we love Market basket too, which is a chain that proves the value of dealing with staff honestly and fairly, but there isn’t one closer than a half-hour to us making it a less-than optimal option. Some people HAVE to go to a S&S for valid reasons during the strike, e.g. prescriptions, or banking, etc. but tossing in a bunch of other items for convenience sake is just lazy and not acceptable. The fact that Mr. Bourque was in fact well-protected through his career by the players association DOES indeed make his actions worse. He SHOULD be ashamed and yes, held to a higher standard due to his fame. How many Mil-lemming-als will feel it is ok “cuz Ray did it too dood”?

The free market dictates the salary of any worker, my local stop & Shop has a number of special needs (or whatever the PC term is for today) workers. That’s what the striking workers are competing against along with self checkout. When I was in high school I worked at an A&P
for minimum wage and all I could steal. If you tattooed goofballs that slice bologna for Mrs. fatass think you’re worthy more go find another job or get a fucking edumacation you asswipes. bettey yet start your own grocery store fuckfaces

Hey Shop n Shop union slopahogs. Your store has been quietly eroding for decades since the investment in Bradlees went to the bottom.
Now most store are ghettos. Beards on the deli guys? I don’t think so. I don’t want hair in my sliced turkey breast.
Its food shopping. My week to week package goods come from Amazon or WalMart direct to my front door. Produce and dairy from Whole Foods or Wegmans. Prepared foods from Henrys in Beverly.
Pushing a disease riddled, rusting shopping cart with a bad wheel through throngs of third world hippopotamus EBTers with screaming babies as they scarf down cookies they pinched, ate and left the empty box at the check out? Not for me.
Union porcines thinks they can jack the failing carcass up for a bigger payday not realizing they are shortening an already short lifespan. Not happy with the contract offered? Get a better job! (see your mother was right……you should have stayed in school!)

    April 15, 2019 at 11:49 am

Anyone buying anything from a company that workers are striking is just plain bad. you are helping the store when the store is not helping its employees. the bank or precriptions should be the only reason to go into a business that the employees are picketing. Ive worked as a union rep and realized that they do not care about you. they line their own pockets. they fight for your raise then they raise union dues. its like social security. they give you a raise then raise medical expenses. i left the union and company to never ever return to a union run businesss again. when my union started going against me thats when i knew it was time to go.

Dear MVTB, this is sooo weak. So he made a decision to say f**k you to the picketers by crossing the picket line and buying food there anyway. He got a shitblast for his indifference. Why should he be any different than anyone else?
And the fact he is a former union member has everything to do with this. What a fucking phony. I was a former member of local 369 (Boston) and my wife still is. I remember. For a blog constantly blathering about free speech, in this instance your talking out of your ass.
I went to S & S yesterday, told the picketers I was sympathetic to their cause but needed to visit the pharmacy. No big deal and we had a nice conversation about shareholder value priorities and general indifference towards working men and women.
The upside to this is there are no “panhandlers of the day” outside begging for money. On a recent visit someone was asking for money for heroin addicted homeless people…

    • Let me up, I've had enough

    “A former union member!!!”

When you have no choice but to be in a union to ply your trade, it really doesn’t matter. Maybe he was on board with the players union. Maybe not. Can anyone name a professional athlete not a union member when his or her teammates are? If you aren’t a member of a union shop you used to have to be fee to the union even if you weren’t a union member. But after the Supreme Court Janus ruling

    From reason dot com

“annual reports filed with the federal Department of Labor show that the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) lost 98 percent of it’s agency fee-paying members during the past year. Another large public sector union, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU), lost 94 percent of their agency fee-paying members.”

That was $12.8 million is payments no longer given to those 2 unions.

Being a professional athlete even if you weren’t pro union you’d still play ball. All kinds of nasty injuries could be inflicted on you during play.

    • Chris
      April 15, 2019 at 3:24 pm

This is why I support Rand Paul’s National Right to Work Act. (I’m from a union family.) The National Labor Relations Act proscribes forced unionization. I wouldn’t have a problem with unions if they didn’t give their due$ money to D-party candidates and Planned Parenthood. This is why I support overturning Citizens United as BOTH SIDES do it!

The extra due$ not given to politicians can be used for the membership. Have a union-run health plan like the old days! Have a union-backed pension like the old days! They make the cos. pay the pensions, ins., etc.

If high school kids have to pay dues to work @ S&S for a summer job, then this makes no sense. Why should they have to join? Also, why should someone making $15/hr. be forced to join a union that represents unskilled labor. These guys aren’t Teamsters, Ironworkers, Steelworkers, etc. Joining a union for this kind of job only keeps your job, unless you’re @ the bottom during layoffs. It’s a tough call.

In Millars case, it probably came down to “This is my chance.” If he didn’t take that chance he may not have ever been given the opportunity to play in the big leagues to show whether he belonged there. He probably made the right decision. No MLB job also means no pension. So, did it really matter? Being a AAA guy isn’t going to earn all that much for all those years he was a MLB guy. He bet on himself. I imagine he’s ok with the outcome.

Let me get this straight, you are trying to get as many people as you can to stop buying things from your employer, which relies on sales to stay in business ….fire them all and hire folks that will try to help your business, not hurt it. Stop and shop should get these parasites charged with trespassing and loitering if they are picketing on their property.

S & S already has aisle clean-up robots. Customers just ignore them and walk around them. For good or for bad, this is the future. Don’t press your luck union members, Robby the robot is our future for many jobs. I had read somewhere else, maybe MassLive, someone was bitching that Robby the robot was taking away the jobs of the handicapped who S & S had hired to do that sort of thing. Not hiring out of malice but giving someone with challenges a job. I doubt S & S fired any of those people as Robby moved in. With the unions attitude, I wouldn’t put it past S & S to say – privately –
Fuck the handicapped, Robby takes over where ever Robby can do the job.
