BCS, College Football Continue To Be a Giant Joke, But At Least TurtleBoy Didn’t Ruin Christmas.

An annual holiday tradition in my family at Christmas is the dinner time argument. We haven’t seen each other in a while, and we’ve all had time to catch up and have some good old fashioned laughs and whimsy. After that someone brings up Obama and all hell breaks loose.

This year Christmas was surpassingly civil and friendly. The lone and small argument involved the farce known as the BCS. I attempted to point out what a joke college bowls are, and what a sucker you’d have to be to buy into it. A couple family members disagreed. Rather than ruin yet another Christmas though, it was agreed upon that it would be blogged about instead. Less awkward and my mother’s not around to tell us to be nice to each other.

As a Notre Dame football fan, I can proudly say that I watched exactly zero minutes of their big bowl game today. They were the chosen ones for the prestigious Pinstripe Bowl, named after the baseball team whose stadium they would have the honor of playing in. Their opponent? Why that would be the legendary Rutgers Scarlett Knights. Safe to say the only people that were excited about this game were,

1) Dingleberries who have been fooled into believing that bowl games mean anything at all, and

2) Bill Belichick since he’ll be drafting half of Rutgers roster in the next two years.

Seriously though, has there ever been a bigger scam pulled on the American people than the bowl game scam? This is literally a conspiracy amongst billionaires in order to feed the public the false idea that not having a playoff system still works. Despite the fact that every other sports league that anyone of any particular significance watches has a playoff to determine its champion, college football hasn’t gotten there yet. Instead they just have their voters (Kevin Gorman types) vote who they THINK are the two best teams in the country, and then those teams play in the National Championship.

Of course it’s not who they really think is the best though. Poll every writer and coach in the country and ask them who wins a game between #2 Auburn and #3 Alabama on a neutral field. At least 75% pick Alabama. Why? Because Alabama’s obviously a better team that lost on a fluke play in a hostile environment on the road because their idiot kickers missed four field goals.

So the voters, in their infinite wisdom picked Auburn and Florida State. Both teams deserve a shot at the national title. But so do Alabama, Michigan State, Ohio State, Baylor, Stanford, and half of the SEC. Picture the San Francisco 49ers not being able to win their way into the Super Bowl because they only went 12-4. Instead they play the Kansas City Chiefs in the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl, and the winner gets…….money? That would be AWESOME.

That’s essentially the same EXACT thing that college football does. They take random teams with no history or tradition, and have them play a game that doesn’t really matter in order to make money. That’s it. That’s the whole thing. And yet morons still fall for it. The fact that anyone would pay more than $5.50 to go see Notre Dame play Rutgers today is nothing less than mind boggling.

Does it really matter if you win or lose a bowl game? If you win, your season is over. But if you lose……oh yea, same exact outcome. But instead of going home 8-5 you go home 9-4. Don’t you get it? Don’t ya see? That’s like the most important thing a team can do. Therefore bowl games are obviously must wins. So in other words a bowl game has the same amount of meaning as a preseason NFL game.

It’s actually worth less (a lot less) than any regular season game in any sport. The Jacksonville Jaguars against the Houston Texans, or the Philadelphia Sixers against the Utah Jazz have actual implications, as the loser is that much closer to the top overall draft pick. What does the loser of Notre Dame-Rutgers get? A pat on the back and a valuable life lesson?

But my family member told me that reaching a “BCS” bowl game is something worth striving for. Poor guy. They got him to buy into it. SMH. You have to love the logic behind this argument. A BCS bowl is more valuable than the Buffalo Wild Wings bowl because they pay more money. And this is what sports is really all about. How much money your school gets paid off the backs of a bunch of kids who will never earn a cent playing football, in a game that ultimately has no bearing whatsoever. Alabama’s in a BCS game. When they win that game they’ll get to end the season as winners. What other league lets half the teams end the season as a winner? No one. Everyone’s a winner. Yay!!!

Let’s take a look at some of the epic bowl match ups this year…

Rose Bowl: Stanford vs. Michigan State

This is the only bowl game besides the “National Championship” that’s has any value whatsoever. The Rose Bowl has actual tradition (Big 10 vs. Pac 12 champions), and gives teams like Michigan State a goal to shoot for after chumping up their second game of the season to Notre Dame. Winning it is cool and all, and something to tell your kids bout I suppose, but in the end – who cares?

Tostitos Fiesta Bowl: Baylor vs. Central Florida

These two schools hate each other so much you might as well rename them Newt Gingrich and Slicky Willie. Who doesn’t want to watch this tradition filled game between a team that recently blew it’s shot at a national title and a team that plays absolutely nobody? Will Central Florida cover the 17 point spread? This is epic television here people.

Valero Alamo Bowl: Texas vs. Oregon

Who wouldn’t wanna watch a 15 point underdog that recently fired their coach go against a team that plays defense like the Phoenix Suns? Pretty awesome system you have when the biggest surprise of the game will be unveiling Oregon’s latest experimental glow in the dark uniform.

UofO-Memes

Cotton Bowl: Alabama vs. Oklahoma

First of all, Alabama in the cotton bowl? Sounds a little…..insensitive to me? Where’s the ACLU on this one? Anyway, this is going to be a can’t miss blow out? Didn’t get enough of Alabama ass whooping Notre Dame in the championship game last year? You ain’t seen nothing yet. Oklahoma +15 is the biggest joke in Vegas right now. And this is what the best team in the country does to end the season in college football. Sweet. Don’t believe Alabama’s the best? Even money, with no points given, name one team that you would bet your life savings on over Alabama if you had to.

Autozone Liberty Bowl: Rice vs. Mississippi State

Get the popcorn ready!!

Heart of Dallas Bowl: North Texas vs. UNLV

This match will determine which mid major team is better – the fourth place Mountain West Conference team, or the third place Conference USA team. The winner will become master of the universe.

Advocare V100 Bowl: Boston College vs. Arizona

The suspense and drama as kickoff nears is unbearable.

In the end I’m sure I’ll watch Florida State vs. Auburn. If FSU wins then they’ve earned the undisputed national championship, albeit without playing Alabama. If Auburn wins then they win the National Championship over several other one loss teams because a bunch of idiot writers “think” they’re the best team in the country. Awesome system bros.

I’m not sure why but this weblog is loading incredibly slow for me.
Is anyone else having this issue or is it a problem on my end?
I’ll check back later and see if the problem still exists.

Exactly why I don’t watch college football

It’s too bad because it’s a pretty good product on the field. Too bad it’s not decided on the field.
