Best Italian Grinder In Worcester: Regatta Or Bushel n’ Peck?

So I got into a big argument today with one of the other Turtleboy writers. It was a gigantic issue so we decided it had to be blog about it – who makes a best Italian grinder in Worcester – Regatta or Bushel n’ Peck? It’s a question that’s as old as time itself. East side vs. West side. This is like an old school Worcester gang war. After watching Bill Belichick’s press conference on Saturday in which he explained the scientific experiment he used to prove that everyone in the country is a butthurt Patriots hater, I was inspired to do my own experiment. Naturally then we had to get to the bottom of this sandwich conundrum via a head to head taste test.

First I’m gonna show you two sandwiches. I’m not gonna say which is from which place. See if you can guess which is which:

Sandwich #1:

Sandwich #2:

As you can see I only get the meats, cheese, pickles, and mayo on my subs. Anything else is uncivilized. Now try to guess which one is Bushel n’ Peck and which one is Regatta. Answer below.

Sandwich #1 is Bushel n’ Peck, and #2 is Regatta. My beef with both sandwiches revolves around one thing – too much bread. I understand that a sandwich is all about the bread, but at some point you’re just masking your sandwich’s value. You’re turning your sandwich into the guy at the club who’s wearing way too much cologne. So to really investigate what’s better you gotta take a few bites first. Here’s what a half eaten version of each one looks like:

No contest really. The top grinder is Regatta, the bottom is Bushel n’ Peck. Hey Regatta – where’s the meat? That’s a bread and pickle sandwich right there. I mean, what am I supposed to do with the left hand corner of that sandwich? It’s just a crevice of mayo at this point.

Clearly the answer to the question then is that Bushel n’ Peck makes the superior Italian grinder. IMHO they’re a million times better service too. I didn’t announce myself as an undercover Turtleboy investigator or else it would’ve skewed the data. At Bushel n’ Peck it was an in and out situation. At Regatta I waited over 15 minutes for that freaking sandwich. They were on the phone taking orders and writing credit card numbers down, which is BS. Customers in the store should ALWAYS take priority over customers on the phone. I actually got my ass off the couch and went down there, and here I am waiting behind the fat bastard on the other end of the phone line who keeps screwing up the expiration date on his debit card.

Anyway, here’s what’s better about the Regatta sub. 1) The bread tastes better. It’s borderline – orgasmic. But as I said earlier, too much of anything is a bad thing. You gotta keep me wanting more as a customer. 2) Regatta has superior pickles. Nice and sour. Bushel n’ Peck’s pickles are like Cucumbers dipped in oregano. At the end of the day though Bushel n’ Peck is your clear winner.

Anyway, check out this bad boy:

Now THAT is a sandwich. I’m getting aroused just looking at it. I mean, look at all that meat. Uhhhhhhhhhhhh. So hot right now. It’s from a magical place called Weepin’ Willies. Ever heard of it? I swear by it. They have one store in Shrewsbury and another Auburn, but they need to open one up in Worcester because I avoid going over that stupid makeshift bridge on Lake Quinsigamond like the plague. They’ve got all types of fresh, delicious crap in there, so it’s worth the ten minute temporary urge to kill yourself that you get while driving down Belmont Street:

Anyway, this could be a lively debate. I’m looking forward to see who wins in the poll. West side till I die!!

Can the burcoat people put in some love for Steves Pizza in West boylston??? Huge sandwiches and all the meat you can handle. I would also like to say that the original Campy’s Deli on the bottom of grafton street had amaizing Italians. Better than all the others…..

I think that every shop mentioned here is great, just all depends in where you are in the city. Tom’s has only been mentioned once so I’ll give it more love! Also, if you find yourself in Webster, definitely check out Delray doc’s on Thompson st by the lake. Excellent!!

I concur–ALL of them have too much bread. I order it dry, tear out some of the inside of the bread, add my own oil or mayo, and I’m a happy camper.

Both garbage amatuer hour food blog. Reggats only good sand which is steak n cheese on French bread.. Italians too much bread as is Bushle n peck which is garbage all around. Belsitos meatballs by far the best in town but their Italian is superb as is murays which has really come back strong recently. And for a quick fix john and sons on chandler st.

Belsito’s is my go-to for italian grinders. They are the BEST!!! Weeping Willies is a close second. I only go to Regatta or B&P if the others are closed.

Italian subs? NOT. Oil not mayo. Peppers not pickles (though I don’t) You have to order it their way to compare. And for me, it’s Regatta all the way.

Did you have it made or take a pre-made one? The Regatta ones that are pre-made have the benefit of the flavors blending as the sandwich sits. Now I wish I picked up a couple while I was in Worcester in case I have to wait out the blizzard with no power.

Haven’t had the grinder at B&P, but stopped in for the first time the other day. We each had soup and a tuna sandwich. Sandwich so huge we each took half home. Their tuna is basic, so since the bread got too soggy, I took out the tuna, added hot pepper relish and celery, and wound up with enough tuna salad to make three sandwiches (and believe me, I’m not a small person, so if I can’t finish, it’s a big meal).
