Is there a bigger joke than the Boston Globe? They’re owned by John Henry, so you can never count on them for any actual objective Boston Red Sox coverage. They’re also most likely run by a bunch of Boston College/BU/Northeastern morons who feel the need to justify their $200K student loans debt by only covering college basketball from crappy schools that don’t matter.

Last night the UMass Minutemen ended their non-conference play with a 73-65 win over Miami (OH). They are now 12-1 and have been nationally ranked for the last month. Kind of big news right? Wonder how the Globe covered it. Here is the cover of today’s Boston Globe sports section:

Ya got that? The 4-11 Boston College Eagles are front page news for losing yet another basketball game to a team that UMass beat. I really wish the Globe would stop trying to ram BC sports down my throat. They taste like cigarettes. Stop making BC try to happen. It’s NOT gonna happen. It’s been this way since I was a kid. I had no idea UMass even existed until they got good in the mid 90’s. But every time I turned on the TV there was some type of update on this mediocre team from Newton. The Globe wasn’t done though. Here’s the rest of the article:

Five freaking columns dedicated to a 4-11 basketball team. But hey, at least they threw UMass a bone by putting in their box score right? This is how I felt when I saw this:

Well they’re in the Top 25 coverage right? After all, they are in the Top 25, even with Kevin Gorman voting. Wait, they’re not even listed in that part? Sweet newspaper dude.

What about their online version, Boston.com? Here’s their college sports page today:

Nicely done Globe. So let me get this straight – the Glove believes that the following are more newsworthy stories than yet another win by the Commonwealth’s flagship university:

1) UConn (the Big East’s foster child that no one wanted so they became a ward of the state) losing to Southern Methodist

2) Notre Dame (a team that lost to North Dakota State this year and is in a different time zone) beating Duke (another team that is 1,000 miles away)

3) Unranked Vanderbilt beating Northeastern by 30 points

All of those are bigger stories according to the dingbats who run the Globe. The Herald, as usual has proven to be the superior source of news in the Boston region. At least Steve Buckley is talking about them:

Screen Shot 2014-01-05 at 3.11.56 PM

Look, it’s pretty simple. If you cover it, they will come. The media dictates what we will all talk about at the bar. You know why the Boston Bruins have developed a bigger following in the last 3 years? It’s not just because they won a Cup, since they made the playoffs 29 freaking years in a row and the diehards from Quincy were still the only ones that wanted to talk NHL. Nope, it was because 98.5 started broadcasting the games and talking about it on Felger and Mazz and Toucher and Rich. That move right there single handedly got Glenn Ordway fired on EEI. Ever since then 93.7 has been talking Bruins a lot more.

But no one wants to talk about a team that no one is talking about. Hundreds of thousands of alumni live inside the 495 belt that the Globe treats like an electric fence used to keep out Genghis Khan and the Mongols. If you start talking about them on the radio and in the news you will have plenty of callers. Then more people will start watching them. That’s how the media works bros.

UMass has one beacon of hope in the mainstream media. A nemesis of me and my boy Larry’s from 98.5 – Marc “Beetle” Bertrand. He got into a Christmas tweet beef with Albert Breer of the NFL network a couple weeks back. Here’s the highlights:

Screen Shot 2014-01-05 at 3.20.27 PM

I don’t always agree with Beetle, but he is 110% right on this one. First of all, Albert Breer needs to go back to being Bill Belichick’s whipping boy and leave basketball to the big boys. Gotta love Breer’s rationale that the Globe shouldn’t cover UMass because the school is in Amherst. Ah-HAH! Looks like we’ve found the real culprit in this lack of coverage: GEOGRAPHY!!!

Yes Albert, we know that Amherst is 90 miles from Boston and is a giant pain in the ass to get to. Does the Globe not have enough gas money or something? UMass is our home state’s team. You know who the media covers in Tennessee? It’s not Vanderbilt. You know which football the media covers in Philadelphia? It’s not Villanova or Temple. It’s Penn State. Good thing Bert Breer doesn’t work for the Philadelphia Inquirer. That’s like 150 miles to Happy Valley. Do you know how much that would cost in gas and tolls? Chill the f*** out UMass fans.

So some Worcester goons called Beetle out on Twitter for not using his platform to talk UMass during a week in which the Patriots were not playing. The tweet beef highlights are as follows:

Screen Shot 2014-01-05 at 3.10.11 PM

So where is Beetle getting this data from? We are the minority? Poll 1,000 sports fans in Boston and ask them who they would rather see make the Final Four – UMass or BC? Wouldn’t even be close. What would people rather hear Felger and Mazz ramble on about – the intricacies of the NFL’s salary cap, or their 12-1 college basketball team? So no Beetle, we are not in the minority. You’re just too scared of your lackey bosses (who most likely are from BC and Northeastern) to take a stand and talk some UMass hoops.

Quite frankly I expected nothing less from the Globe. This is a newspaper that allowed Gish Jen to print an editorial the day after the Red Sox duck boat parade that blamed Bostonians for the fact that the Tsarnaev brothers blew up the Boston Marathon. But Beetle man, I expect more from you. Take a lap bros.

Either way, UMass will just keep winning when they start conference play against St. Joe’s this week. And when they’re a Top three seed in the NCAA tournament and your bosses all make you guys give the Minutemen some press, please don’t pretend like you actually give a shit.

Feel free to share your thoughts to keep the conversation going.

Shaun King really is a problem. He ruins race relations with his high-flown accusations, but those fallacies are so welcomed by a group of people that seem unable to get out of their own way that he becomes relevant.

Who is a black role model? Neil Degrasse-Tyson. Why don’t we hear about him more often? He’s brilliant, influential, relevant, and his reputation is unassailable. “The good thing about science is that it’s true whether or not you believe in it”, says Neil, but the overwhelming majority of blacks want to listen to Shaun King spouting lies instead of Neil Degrasse Tyson. Think about that.

Can the real reason be that black people find some comfort in difficulty and running against some wind of their own creation? If so, there’s really no helping them.

With serious regards to recent events:

Only an imbecile would take an unsolicited picture of a black woman on a train and not expect a problem. If you’ve lived anywhere except a remote village in the Swiss Alps for half your life and you’re not severely mentally impaired, you know enough not to do stuff like that. Should the old guy have been beaten like he was? No. But who wouldn’t see that coming? Seriously. You also don’t reach into her bag of Funyuns and help yourself or tell her that hairstyle doesn’t work on her. Expect to get socked. The “upskirt” ruse was just an excuse. They know it didn’t happen. They just weren’t having that infringement happen. Any woman would be bothered, and especially given the current state of race relations, that was going to be a problem.

The charcoal lady and the calling for water-selling permit one… Had they ever run into a black person before they got in their business? What if a bunch of Crips were smoking in a subway station? Is one of them going to stand there and record them and upload it to the transit police? If so, whoever does is obviously going to be on the news the next day.

White people don’t even need to do anything to be blamed for whatever bad stuff happens to black people outside of them shooting each other. Nothing is really going to change that because… projection. Stay out of their business and don’t give them a reason to gripe about us.

Here is some more info, as I got the sports section out of recycling before the guys came to pick it up. It is on page 14, along with the BC story. The UMass story is in the center of the page and has a picture of Put driving to the hoop. The BC story is on the right hand side of the page and has a small picture of Hanlan. Both stories seem about equal in length. Believe me, I am no Globe lover, but they have been covering the team all season and most of the time there has been a story published in the edition I get delivered to my home.

The story was written by Jeff Wagenheim who has covered most of Umass’s home games this year. Unfirtunately the newspaper has gone to recycling heaven.

Time to pile on…. so yesterday the Minutemen moved up to #19, getting into the Top 20 in the AP for the first time in quite a few years (note: they were #20 earlier this year in the Coaches poll). Looking at Boston.com, there are two articles about the new AP poll, both AP articles (one the press release, one an analysis of the new poll), without any mention of UMASS. Now, that part doesn’t surprise me. What surprises me less is that there is no article about UMASS moving up in the poll by a Globe writer anywhere to be seen.

    Well done, Globe.

But I’m sure Mel’s version of the paper had a nice big article about it, possibly bigger than the one about Branch signing with the Colts.

Mel – Can you link that article? It wasn’t in the Globe I saw yesterday and I only see two AP articles via Boston.com.

Globe had a bigger story about the UMass game than about the BC game. It was written by the same correspondent who has covered most of this year’s home games.

Also…it’s not just the Globe…it’s all of Boston media. Here are my 2 tweets to CBS Boston Radio on the day UMass got it’s first national ranking in 15 years
