So Aubuchon Hardware in Fitchburg has decided to lock out their employees over an ongoing labor dispute, right before the holidays. Here’s an official statement from the Teamsters about why:

Teamster warehouse workers and drivers at Aubuchon Hardware’s distribution facility found themselves locked out of their jobs when they reported to their shifts this morning. They were met by security who had been instructed to tell the workers that they were not allowed on the property. The 60 warehouse workers and drivers at Aubuchon’s distribution center are represented by Teamsters Local 170. After difficult contract negotiations that involved Aubuchon Hardware attempting to end its employees’ pensions and significantly raise their health care costs, the workers and the company agreed on a contract on October 21.

The workers planned to hold a contract ratification vote, but before that happened, Aubuchon changed the contract to include language allowing the company to outsource the distribution center work.

“We told Aubuchon that we cannot let this company outsource these jobs and destroy the lives of 60 families in Massachusetts,” said Shannon George, Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Local 170. “They want to outsource their distribution business to Orgill, Inc. It is the height of hypocrisy for a company that calls itself locally-operated and community-oriented to send good New England jobs to a low-wage sub-contractor in West Virginia.

“The company refused to honor the contract we jointly agreed upon. Massachusetts communities have supported Aubuchon Hardware for decades. It’s outrageous that the company would treat community members who work there in this fashion.”

“I don’t know what kind of people renege on something they’ve agreed to,” said shop steward Bruce Girouard. “We discussed our contract for a long time. It feels like they’re trying to cheat us out of job security by slipping in different language at the last minute.”

“We showed up to work this morning and Aubuchon wouldn’t let us in. Now we’re out here on the street with no pay because the company is trying to starve us out just weeks before Thanksgiving, to force us to accept a contract that kills 60 jobs,” Girouard said.

“The Teamsters will not allow companies to intimidate workers,” said Sean O’Brien, Teamsters International Vice President, Teamsters Local 25 President and Secretary-Treasurer of Teamsters Joint Council 10 in New England. “The Teamsters are in the process of filing charges against Aubuchon with the National Labor Relations Board. This is a serious violation of federal laws protecting workers’ rights. Teamster members throughout New England stand ready to support these members of Local 170 as they fight back against Aubuchon’s abuses of workers and communities.”

Unions are always a tricky issue. We respect workers, but we also respect property rights of business owners. We think there needs to be a happy medium that can be reached and this can be achieved through collective bargaining. Unions can’t get their way all the time, but they have a right to organize businesses that don’t respect that are anti-American. Anyone who is against unions is against the American middle class. It simply would not exist without organized labor. Facts only.

We understand that there are two sides to every story, but after watching this video we’ve drawn our own conclusions. You can watch it by clicking hereBut basically it’s the CEO Will Aubuchon, who creepily walks around the store with a huge smile on his face, telling customers to come on down and don’t let the locked out workers get in the way:

That might be the most punchable face I’ve ever seen. We don’t know all the details about this labor dispute. But we know a dickhead when we see one. And that guy right there is a huge dickhead. Just the way he speaks in the video reminds me of this guy:

He’s the guy who got a swirly from the football team, buried the pain deep inside, and bided his time for the day when he would eventually inherit the family business and get his sweet, sweet revenge.

For the record, there is a huge difference between a strike and a lockout. The fact of the matter is that the Teamsters and Aubuchon Hardware were negotiating the terms of their employment in good faith, when they got to work one day and found out they could not work because hired guards were letting scabs in. And scabs are the lowest of the low. This is not a strike, it’s a lockout. Asswipe in the video uses the word strike. He is lying.

And sorry, but I will never support a company that outsources it’s labor when I can go to a competitor that hires Americans. The people involved in this strike can probably tell you a lot more. All I know is, this is not a face I would ever trust with anything:

I would be a little more sympathetic if Will Aubuchon actually was the founder of Aubuchon Hardware. But he’s really just a lucky sperm who obviously has been shoved in way too many lockers and is now taking it out on the Teamsters. The hardware store has existed for generations because the Aubuchon’s carried on a good working relationship with the teamsters. That’s because his grandparents are probably decent people from the Greatest Generation who understood the importance of business owners and workers getting along.

But he’s just a lucky sperm who was handed a business and is blowing up everything his family created in the name of smug, corporate greed. If I was living up in the Fitchburg/Leominster era, I’d never shop at a hardware store that locks workers out right before the holidays. What a dick.

More liberal drivel from lefty turtleboy.

Who says the workers were locked out? The union? HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

I suppose you believe that HRC didn’t delete all her incriminating emails and that Granny Warren actually has indian blood!

Unions are for the lazy and stupid and benefit only the head honchos and the Democrat pols they pay off with kickbacks.

For some reason I couldn’t see the video. Too bad when anyone loses a job. Except Obama

Does anybody else think that Will Aubuchon looks a lot like a Turtle? This is very unfortunate… Sooo maybe he could be the “Anti-Turtle”!? This would make a lot more sense. The Anti-Turtle is the Enemy of Truth and Freedom.

There is something happening all around you all the time Turtleboy and it’s called the future. In this future there is no room or need for Aubuchons or Unions. They simply can’t compete with Home Depot, WalMart and hell even Dollar stores have Hardware isles now. This wild invention called computers came along and they can do the job of at least 10 people. If nobody is buying your shit, no need for 60 people stocking shelves when a larger company will do it for you at half the expense and you don’t have to worry about payroll taxes and the changing insurance companies every month. Boo fucking hoo it’s the Holiday season. Man up you faggott it’s just another day of the year, either work or get left in the dust.

The bad news is Aubuchon has to dump off workers, the good news is the malls, WalMart and all the other stores are hiring right now for the Holiday rush. I don’t give a shit if you’re stacking cans of Peas at Shop and Save or stacking screwdrivers for Aubuchon it’s the same fucking job.

But the thing is, those “protected” Union workers were probably making top dollar to stock those shelves after so much time with the company. People who have mortgages, children, college tuitions, etc. Ya know, and are more or less relying on the money they make. I completely get your argument of it being the future, cutting employees, finding computers or lower-paid workers to do the same job, I get it. I worked in a Union that was extremely overpaid for the work that we did. Believe me. The Union is no good and just protects a bunch of fucking lazy, middle-aged, overpaid asshats. But the principle of this story is that future innovation or not, Aubuchon single-handedly destroyed the lives of five dozen families right before the holidays with zero notice. Great that Walmart and every other minimum (or close to) wage job is hiring before the holidays, but that’s no help if you making $25/hour. It fucking sucks. If the company was planning on downsizing, at least give employees some notice of the changes being made so they aren’t just thrown to the streets (or locked out) with no warning. Again I agree with you that it is crazy and a waste of money for Aubuchon to not make cuts were needed – in pay or employees. But it’s the way they want about it that is the issue. Dick head.

I get what you’re saying and it is to bad that people making $27/hr to stock shelves are going to lose their cushy jobs but the bubble is going to bust sooner or later. It’s not like Aubuchon said ‘hey whatever you do don’t go to school at night and better yourself, there will always be a demand for stock boys earning $56k a year.’.

Grow up. There are no guarantees in life. In any occupation there is a cap on the positions value.

Yes. I understood that from the get go, especially since I’ve been the $27/hour stock boy. I’m just saying right, wrong or indifferent, the manner in which they lost their jobs is a little fucked up to put it nicely – they were locked out and their autistic-looking “CEO” essentially made a video mockery of their job loss. I feel for the employees that may be spending their Thanksgiving or Christmas with their lights or heat turned off due to Aubuchon’s way of letting them go and not immediately being able to find a comparably-salaried position (since let’s face it – most of these employees are very replaceable and have no “true” skill). Just sad.

Well you’re absolutely right and the situation is sad and I realize I’m probably not the most compassionate person on the planet but if someone who worked a menial job long enough to be earning $27/hr. and they weren’t smart enough to save and invest over all of those years that’s their own fault. There are many things that can be fixed in this world but unfortunately stupid isn’t one of them. Thanksgiving is just another day. We cook Turkeys year round because they are cheap, easy and taste delicious. If you aren’t working or trying to make a living 365 days a year then you are just lazy. In life you reap what you sew.

You obvi don’t need tools to earn a living. Depot and Lowe’s sell garbage.

You obviously don’t know your ass from your elbow about tools or having a business. We blow through a lot of Home Depot tools and that’s all a business expense and a large deduction every year.

Mike I’ll talk slow so you can understand. This is a LOCK OUT not a STRIKE….This is the reason we need unions. The COMPANY locked the employees out. The UNION and EMPLOYEES Didn’t strike . The UNION is protecting the employees right to work. Whether it’s unskilled labor or not it’s still a job and people need to be protected.

    • Mr Spacely
      November 8, 2016 at 3:50 pm

The employees need to be protected from the union more than they do from the employer. Unions steal money from the employees with the false hope they they will protect them, Sort of like the mafia. When it comes down to it the union doesn’t care about them they just want their dues. Strike, lockout doesn’t matter, one side thinks the playing field isn’t level.

Locked out employees don’t have pre-made signs that say Strike on them at 6 am.

      Striking workers do. Be better.

I shop Aubuchon quite a bit… It’s local and saves me the drive to Home Depot or Lowes. But I’m not going to give them a dime if they treat their employees like this. And if they outsource, I’ll never be back.

It is amazing that small hardware and home improvement stores are in business but they do it because the employees owners and customers all are in it together.

The need for Unions is thing of the past. There was a time when they did some good for the workers but they are just a business now. Perfect time to break the union. Let them stay out on strike and hire some new non union workers to replace them. Non skilled warehouse workers are a dime a dozen.
