We recently blogged about the hellhole we found at Laughlin Kennel in Oxford. The kennel where the dogs are kept is surrounded by a wooden fence, presumably so the general public cannot see what is happening:

12064347_1657002814582995_645845455_n-2

But the dogs bark 24/7 and they are LOUD:

Anyway, after our story about Jennifer Gardner – the woman who previously owned Elite Puppies, which has a long and documented history of selling puppies that get very sick and often die – we began to get flooded with horror stories from this place. We’ll be documenting them in a series of blogs. But for now we wanted to start with a former employee who only agreed to speak with us under the condition of anonymity. Here is a picture he sent us of how the dogs are kept there:

12351539_10156358245895370_692655956_o

Notice the dog on top is forced to hunch its back because it does not fit in the cage. This is a common thing the kennel allegedly does which leads to serious problems for the dogs as they grow. This is a video of a mastiff with an injured leg which got that way as a direct result of being kept in a cage that was too small for it. Instead of paying to get it fixed, we are told by the former employee, that the dog was put down:

This was allegedly done in order to save money – the dog was costing them more to fix than it would cost to sell it. The former employee claims that there are so many dead that they are put into a “dead dog freezer.” He reports to us that this is a bag of dead puppies at Laughlin Kennels:

12351503_10156358279355370_1717585307_o

Once again, these are allegations. We have reached out to Laughlin Kennel several times for comment but to no avail.

The former employee also reports to us that he witnessed breeding dogs get into a fight, and one of the dogs lost his ear after it was ripped off. According to our source the vet was not called for a week because “they didn’t want an extra vet bill.” Here’s a blurry photograph he took of the dog. Notice the bite marks on the torso and the missing left ear:

12355869_10156358290935370_118906116_o

Here is a video he took of breeding dogs who are clearly very sick and malnourished, walking around in their own feces:

Perhaps most alarming is his claim that he injected dogs with Amikacin, an antibiotic that must be administered by a licensed professional, and is designed to get rid of kennel cough. Our source was never licensed, but was giving out these vaccinations anyway, under orders of his superiors. He says that he was made to believe that it was perfectly normal, and since he needed a job to support his family, he did as he was told. However, he claims he was led to believe that this was perfectly normal by the owners. Once he discovered some of the dirty secrets of Laughlin Kennel though, he began to go rogue and take pictures and videos. Here is a picture of some of the stuff he was tasked with giving to the dogs:

12356205_10156358246440370_914564736_o

Here is a partial video of him injecting Amikasin into a sick puppy, which he was not legally allowed to do. We have the whole video but we don’t know how to blur out his face. If you can help us out with that send us an email – turtleboysports@gmail.com:

Once again, he claims he did not know it was illegal to do this at the time, and he was just doing the job he was told to do because he trusted that his employers would not make one of their employees do something illegal.

We’ve also been sent stacks of complaints filed with the Massachusetts Department of Agricultural Resources, the regulatory body for kennels. They inspect kennels from time to time, and conveniently the inspectors have found nothing wrong with Laughlin Kennel. Many suspect that they are tipped off ahead of time and get rid of incriminating and illegal things on the premises.

unnamed-2

According to another source we spoke with,

“I have a pile of official complaints, some should have resulted in a violation. .. but Laughlin has NEVER been fined… WHY? They purchase their puppies from some of the worst puppy mills. Numerous violations of deplorable conditions. One of their suppliers, Justin and La Nae Jackson has had over 300 dogs on property and have had violations every year… even received and official warning from the USDA. This information is easy to find, but Laughlin continues to buy from them.”

Here are two of the dozens of official complaints that were sent to the MDAR and ignored. This is from a woman who bought a puppy that she was assured was not a puppy mill dog. She paid $2,000 for the dog only to find out she was lied to. Shortly after the dog became deftly ill and died:

12363988_10156358406505370_954155515_o

Here is a complaint from a neighbor about the things that she has witnessed living near the kennel. According to her, the house was formerly owned by people who raised German shepherd show dogs, and thus had a kennel. When the new owners, the Fink family, moved in, the neighbor claims that they increased the size of the kennel and began breeding and importing dogs in bulk. After that they put the wooden fence up so neighbors couldn’t see what was happening. She claims that no one lives there anymore and it is only used for commercial purposes, but the neighbors have to put up with the barking all night from the sick dogs:

12364464_10156358406180370_1844309859_o

Pretty damning stuff right there. Michael Cahill is the director of the MDAR who is seemingly doing nothing about this place. Here is his email: Michael.Cahill@state.ma.us. If you think Michael Cahill should get off his ass and do the job he’s paid six figures to do, feel free to shoot him an email.

There is a protest at the house on Larned Rd from 11-4 on Saturday if anyone is interested in participating. Turtleboy finds this all repulsive and in our opinion this place needs to get shut down. It’s disgusting that this is going on and no one seems to give a shit.

We urge you to support the Turtleboy Sponsors by doing business with them. Without them none of this is possible. Click on any of them to check out their sites or Facebook pages.

I’ve been in this kennel about 7-8 years ago, it’s worse than the pictures even show. I was hired and quit the same day because of the disgusting conditions. I can’t even describe the smell of the shit filled kennels in mid summer, no AC, super enclosed space. Dogs packed 2-5 to a crate that should probably only have one dog. The wire bottoms on those crates easily allowed small toes and nails to get caught, I saw quite a few dogs with nails ripped off. Dogs would frequently run out of water and were only allowed those rodent style water bottles which were also not very clean. So many dogs with parvo and kennel cough I can’t even believe this place is still in business.

Contact news media…contact Peta….contact AKC….contact ASPCA instead of MSPCA…send the videos…then sit back and pray for those pups…report vets that will do nothing also…try State Police…send emails to your state representatives with videos…make enough noise and report to state reps anyone who was notified and DID NOTHING.

Not hard to see how “nothing has been done”; this is a shit fest. Your evidence is unsubstantiated and weak, your witnesses are confused and ignorant…..lots of ASSuming going on, but it takes more than that and a bunch of blurry pics from a disgruntled ex-employee make a case. At this point the only case that might be successful is slander and libel……against you. Nobody likes to see animals mistreated: if it is happening, solid evidence and reliable witnesses should be presented to the proper authorities. Anything less is just an Internet smear campaign.

    • Laurie
      December 21, 2015 at 11:37 pm

While I agree that the video is poorly done and doesn’t provide adequate evidence, the fact that numerous people have spent thousands of dollars to get a dog that is sick and either required thousands of dollars in vet care, or died, should be more than enough evidence for the AGR to do a surprise inspection. That and the fact that there is documented proof that the dogs are coming from a known puppy mill in Oklahoma.

It is true that anyone can post online anonymously by putting down a fake name. That works both ways. I definitely agree that Jen Gardner is not stupid enough to respond….but she is smart enough to blog favorably about herself anonymously.

From my experience working at a mall pet store, I can tell you that inspectors are paid to write good reviews on poor conditions. The pet store I worked at had a “sick bay” in the back where many puppies with anything from kennel cough to much worse like parvo, were “treated” by the worse vet in existence. A couple of dogs I can recall was a small tea cup Yorke who I was told to give an i.v. but in the end the parvo got the better of him. Then a corgi who contracted another disease and wound up going blind, insane and then dieing. People may ask why we didn’t call the crap vet? Well the answer is we did, multiple times. This resulted in him telling us he wasn’t interested in seeing the dieing puppy and it would have to wait 5 days which was when he would be there again. This poor pup also died. I had pictures on an old cell phone that I took of the conditions in the back of the store but it is no longer in use and I’ve no idea how to get the pictures or video off of it. On a happier side note: the pets tore has since been shut down.

THANK GOD FINALLY…..I also used to work there..I lasted less then a week and I quit. I come from a family that breed show dogs…all by the book..and I though working there would be great…the first day I relized it wasnt but I couldnt just leave the dogs there….this place was mostly dine out if her basement were the washing machine would floor the floor leaving pups in there cage two inches deep in water! Now she does have a quarantine room for new pups BUT everyday she mived the room???? How can that work…and then the POS vet she was paying would come and they sent me into anither room which I thought was strangr so I watched and she processed to uthenize about 6 choc labs all because they had kennel cough and were getting to old ….about 15 weeks also another pup with KC I told her I have all the meds at home let me take her and get her better that she doesnt have to put it down and she laughed atb me and told me no!! The pups r always in the crates never taken out….I called everyine I could think of and made a complaint…..they came and did NOTHING!!! Over and over they did nothing!!! I tell everyone NEVER get a pup from her or any place like hers…..they need to be shut down and NOW!!!

    • chrissy
      December 11, 2015 at 9:13 pm

Also…i fotgot to say that those labs she put down….they werent even dead yet before she dumped them all in a trash bag….i saw the condensation from there beath on the inside of the bags….so awaful! I think she paid off the people that came to do the investigation cuz how else would she still be in business after all those complaints…this is why she will not let anyinr see how the pups r held and if u ask she tells u flat out no….the breeding dogs were so old and u can trll there sick and have been bred to many times…some r so old there blind but shes still breeding them…. something this time has to be done please…please let this be the end of her….

I worked for this establishment over 13 years ago, it was my f job and reason being for me working there was because I wasn’t old enough to get a job anywhere else. I worked there for the whole summer and I am sad to say but all of these allegations are true. When I was working there two dogs ended up getting in a fight and being 13 years old w not much experience I thought the right thing to do was try and separate them. Well I ended up getting bit on my hand. That night I went to urgent care and they wrapped my hand up but I didn’t report it. The following day the owner asked hat happened and when I told him he blankly said “what the fuck is wrong with you, you fuckn idiot” That day I work in the kennel downstairs in the house (the dogs from the mills) That day I was taking care of a puppy that was really SICK ALL DAY AND HALFWAY THROUGH THE DAY I WENT TO GO CHECK IN ON HIM and he was dead and like frozen to the crate. I was so upset that they didn’t bring him to the dog hospital in the first place that I quit that day, I just couldn’t take the mental abuse and the physical abuse towards the puppies any longer. If all this stuff was happening 134 years ago I can only imagine what was happening recently. good luck with getting them shut down and any support I co to help let me know!

  • Perspective
    December 11, 2015 at 9:05 am

I’m not saying the place doesn’t have a thousand things wrong with it but some of the medical/legal stuff was clearly interpreted and reported on by people who are ignorant of terms and laws. You do not vaccinate with antibiotics for example. From there it became obvious that as bad as the place may be, fact checking is lacking here which makes me question quite a bit. The mastiff looks like a congenital defect in such case, from a kennel and breeding perspective, shouldn’t be rehabilitated. This sounds like some really horrible situations but some of these have also been viewed and judged by people who lacked the knowledge to truly understand and evaluate them.

    • December 12, 2015 at 7:51 am

you are right you dont vaccinate with antibiotics and what was said was i gave antibiotics and vaccinations when the article was written mustve misinterpreted what i said and the mastiff wasnt a congenital defect trust me its from keeping a growing mastiff in a cage that is way too small trust me i loved that mastiff and they wouldve never excepted him if he came in and his leg was looking like that

Without knowing about the puppy mill accusations, myself and many of my family members have bought dogs at Laughlin Kennel over the past few years and had positive experiences. My mother back in early 2012, myself in Spring of 2013, and my sister in early 2015. All of us got dogs who seemed well nourished and socialized with no health complications. The kennel staff was also very up front during the sale about their return policy for sick dogs.

If these photos, videos, and statements from former employees are true I am appalled and will never purchase another dog there again. With that being said why did this guy not have the guts to take this information to the police where it belongs? If he knew they were violating laws and more importantly hurting animals he had no valid excuse not to. He could have easily let them in to see it firsthand or they could have gotten a warrant based off his information. Something does not add up, and someone needs to go to jail.

    • Itinerant Engineer
      December 11, 2015 at 9:45 am

Sometimes going to the police doesn’t get anything done; if you really want people to take notice you go to the media, the outrage machine takes charge, and then officials are forced to respond. It’s unfortunate, but that’s the way it is sometimes.

First, Michael Cahill is directly linked to the AKC, and therefore to breeders. He is responsible for implementing a policy that all rescue dogs coming into the state must be quarantined for 48 hours in a state approved quarantined facility, then examined by a vet before release, but there is nothing in the policy stating that dogs coming from breeders from out of state have to be quarantined. Look it up. This is blatant discrimination. Yet a tractor trailer full of puppies coming from a so called “breeder” from Mississippi was not questioned when it stopped at the Walmart in Worcester a few months back to deliver a puppy to a woman, and it was reported to the police. A whole tractor trailer full.

Second, Jennifer Gardner and the Fink family are PUPPY MILL OWNERS and need to be shut down immediately, and held financially responsible for the treatment and placement of all of their dogs. Her post on this blog exposes her for exactly the person she is…..a greedy low life who deserves jail time. I will be at the protest on Saturday, and I will be e-mailing Michael Cahill, along with the media and anyone who will listen. I am so sick and tired of people like Jennifer Gardner getting away with this kind of abuse. Any and all animal lovers (you know us poor people who need to get a life) need to start using our voices to make law enforcement and the corrupt government that we will not be silenced until these dogs are out of there, and these perpetrators do jail time. Period.

    • Gardengal
      December 11, 2015 at 7:58 am

THIS!!!!! Is exactly why Cahill does nothing about Laughlin. He is in bed with the AKC. My Rescue has had to jump though hoop after ridiculous (expensive) hoop to stay in compliance with the laws for rescued dogs, but dogs from these disgusting mills travel freely with their diseases! Who is HIS boss, does anyone know who Cahill report to? The governor?

Unfortunately, PETA can’t really do anything about anything. They’re a bunch of extremist hypocrites and their organization puts down thousands of healthy animals every year because they don’t believe in domestication. Watch the Penn & Teller: Bullshit! episode about them for an overview and do some research if you don’t believe me.

My family bought a dog from Laughlin kennel. We didn’t have prior knowledge of the businesses reputation but have read a lot about it since. Our dog was immediately part of the family despite his kennel cough and tufts stay as a result of canine pneumonia . Months past while we battled what appeared to be in curable parasites. At eight months ols our puppy was diagnosed with hip displacia. He has undergone a very expensive surgery and experienced great success . We love him a lot but our expenses exceeded 12000.00$ in the first 6 months we owned him..I urge all to do their homework and please don’t buy your next pet from this shit hole.

I just want to say that all of you who are judging me and my partners at Lauhlin Kennel have it all wrong. We follow the laws and rules set out by the State governing bodies. We love our animals and love offering our dogs into loving families. So what if they have a little cough or problem. That can be fixed. We have families too you know. Think about what it costs us to keep everything going. We need the money and you are trying to take away our only way to provide for our families. Just because we found a way to make a damn good living unlike the rest of you poor people isn’t our fault. Mind your own business. They’re just dogs! Not people. Why don’t you guys go fight about ISIS or Trump or something.

      December 10, 2015 at 6:42 pm

Coming from someone who practically ran a puppy mill in webster i’m not surprised it’s about money. I remember walking by and seeing that truck stacked with puppies in small metal cages. Practically covered in filth but as long as your bills are paid its ok to screw the public with sick dogs. Your incompetent practices with animals are what drive people poor because you do not refund the vet costs at any cost. “They’re just dogs” is not a valid excuse for animal cruelty AND abuse. Rot in hell jen.

Jen, aka “John Lee, ” you must really be struggling to pay the car payment on your Mercedes… The ends don’t justify the means in this case. A “little cough or problem” is unacceptable in a business where you should be concerned about the welfare of the puppies that you’re marketing, especially when that “commodity” is a living thing that can experience pain. How would you feel if you bought your Mercedes, it ran sluggishly the week after you bought it, and the dealer turned you away and refused to repair it? Please don’t try to justify your position by saying everyone who is criticizing your practices is “poor.” Do you have to be a sociopath without a moral compass to be successful? I know plenty of people who are affluent and did not sacrifice their humanity on the way, unlike the husk of a human being that is sitting behind her computer typing slanderous statements about a whistle-blower who brought she and her partners’ nefarious dealing to light. Take a long hard look at yourself and I hope that you are never allowed to work in a capacity where you have to care for another living entity, you are truly a deranged individual.

If you think Jenn Gardner wrote that comment you people are dumber than I thought. You can post under anyone’s name as I proved above. They didn’t even spell her name correctly. If you have to lie and cheat to get your point across you clearly have not argument.

thats where i bought a dog from turns out dog was very sick and had diabetes and never was really up to any walks. it was a cocker spaniel. it was years and years ago. thought it was odd they wouldn’t let me go in back to see other puppy’s . and vets said that the puppy had a lot of treatment for kennel cough and still had it when i got the poor thing (Laughlin Kennel) is where i got the puppy from

We purchased a Mastiff from them many years ago. He was quiet when we got him, became more and more subdued as time went by. After a week we took him to our own vet and they diagnosed pneumonia and kennel cough. I called Laughlin because they had a health guarantee and I wanted them to cover the vet bills. Their response was to tell us too bring him back and they would “replace” him. I told them to kiss off, paid the vet bills and kept the dog. I guess they think nothing of putting a dog down but we were already attached. Lesson learned. Next time we adopted a rescue we went straight to the vet on day one.

Someone should investigate Second Chance Animal Shelter.

      December 10, 2015 at 5:39 pm

Why? I volunteer at the one in East Brookfield in the cat wing and haven’t noticed any glaring issues in the dog or cat wing. Not saying there aren’t issues, though. Just curious

For what, exactly? I always thought they were A-OK, I’ve had dogs and cats treated at their vet center with no bad results.

Keep the pressure on them Turtleboy! While you are at it, a little digging into the Sweat Pea situation wouldn’t hurt. They have raised over 100K…where’s that & going now that the shelter is facing legal troubles?.

      December 11, 2015 at 3:21 pm

What a game this appears to be. I spoke with Mike Cahill this week and though there were concerns, Sweetpea was not in any way being accused of animal cruelty. I’ve seen some shelter photos with the same issues cited on the most recent report. Cement floors with no sealant, dog kennels with only chain link, and cats within audible distance of dogs. Regardless, with the donations they have now, all of those things can and will be remedied…unless someone tries to oust current management. I don’t know the legal issues, but I would assume the 100K would then follow the shelter, regardless of who’s running it. Or I suspect that legally, it would have to be put toward a similar cause.

But here’s a scenario: MDAR has not inspected Laughlin Kennels at all based on some pretty terrible complaints, but began investigating Sweetpea when someone claimed it was “too cold.” Sounds to me like there’s a whole lot of BS happening, moreso now that there’s a large sum of money for a rebuild. Where were the donations when they wanted to renovate and didn’t have the money to do it all at once? And the interest?

Mspca has nothing to do with it. All complai2 go to michaelcahill@ state.ma.us. he’s gotten a lot today. Also the video of their dogs in their own filth is exactly representing a puppy mill. Laughlin not only purchased puppy mill pups but runs a puppy mill. Come join us for our protest Saturday Dec 12th @ Laughlin Kennels. Its at 11 am. They’re located 11 Larned Road Oxford. The Director of Mass Coalition Against Puppy Mills will be there with documented proof where these pups come from. We’ve been protesting since june, but with Turtleboy Sports story …we need you.

Those poor helpless animals. Thanks again for helping the most needy TB, the world has become a better place since you’ve shown up.

I just want to Thank You for posting about Laughlin Kennels and actually caring about the poor dogs that are held captive there in those deplorable conditions. We as a community are outraged and have done everything we can think of to try to stop this tradgedy from continuing. The dedicated group of protesters are relentless and will not give up until something is done. I am going to take your suggestion and contact Michael Cahill and hope that he does in fact get off his ass and do SOMETHING- Anything! Please do not give up on this or forget about this cause- we need all the help we can get. Sincere thanks! Ruth Perry

I know your source. He’s a goof ball, but he’s fairly trustworthy. He asked me yesterday if I know Turtleboy Sports (of fucking course I do) and said he had sent a bunch of videos in.

He also said he quit working there because of Jennifer Gardner being such a massive bitch.

The “trustworthy” person is Dave Owens. He is a drug dealer who has pending charges. I also worked there when he quit. He quit because was going to be drug tested and knew he was going to fail. He is a piece of garbage that talks shit about everyone. Google the fat asses name, you will see.

Turtleboy, I think if you look a little closer at Cahill you’d find him in bed with so-called breeders, or even may dabble in it himself. I read an article stringing them quite closely together a while back.

My poor Linus has cost us $8K in his first two years with us and then another 10K in two weeks for tumor surgery! He came from an Amish puppy mill in PA. These people are lower scum than all the SJW’s put together… This kind if thing is the only issue I consider myself a “PJW” on. PUPPY MILL JUSTICE WARRIORS UNITE!

These people are SCUM. Plain and simple… They deserve to be locked in the cages they put these poor pups in without food…
