NORTHBORO — A man apparently desperate to escape a traffic stop climbed a tree next to Interstate 290 westbound on Friday shortly after 8 p.m.
It was approximately 1 degree below zero with a wind chill at minus 21 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. By the time the man agreed to come down, less than an hour later, he was too cold to actually descend, state police Lt. James Fogarty said from the Holden barracks. Northboro Fire Department loaned their bucket truck to retrieve the man, who was then arrested on charges that police did not make immediately available to the press.
Charges were dropped when it was revealed that this was just a member of the Swiss Family Robinson. Seriously though, this guy gives new meaning to the term “tree hugger.” Or maybe he just like trees and was trying to get high? Too many one liner possibilities with this story.
A+ plus for effort, but a D- for planning. I gotta give this guy credit. A lot of people try driving away from the cops, or even fleeing on foot. I’ve seen Cops a million times, and I can’t recall ever seeing someone pull this move. It’s been freaking cold this weekend man. Shoveling snow for 10 minutes blows, but at least you’re moving around. Sitting in a tree on a highway? Nothing about that sounds like a good idea. I’m not sure exactly what he was thinking. I mean, I know it’s a well known fact that cops don’t climb trees, but they can get cats down like you read about. Either way, I don’t know what’s scarier – the fact that this guy can vote and have as much influence as everyone else, or that he could one day date my daughter. Freedom is a very scary thing.
