Administrators at Amherst Regional High School have contacted the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association with charges that Smith Vocational coaches were on school grounds attempting to convince four Amherst freshman basketball players to transfer to Smith in violation of the MIAA’s rules that prohibit recruiting. The unauthorized presence on campus led to a lockdown.

Two men identified as Scott Moses and Jason Ruiz checked in at the main office at 1:30 pm on April 2nd. They were given green visitor passes and headed to the guidance office. Upon entering the guidance office they were greeted by Connie Cappelli. They requested that Connie have four of our male 9th grade students pulled from class, so that they could have them fill out applications to Smith Vocational. Connie explained that we do not do this and she could give the applications to the students at the end of the day. The men explained that they were the boys’ basketball coaches and they need to have them fill the application out right away. Connie reiterated her first statement and the men left the guidance office and checked out at the main office at 1:43 pm.

Connie followed up with the guidance counselors of the boys and none of the counselors knew anything about any of the boys applying to Smith Vocational. Connie then proceeded to check in with Michaela Tarr to see if she knew anything about Smith Smith Vocational representatives coming to the school. Michaela knew nothing about it and also mentioned to Connie that it sounded like a recruiting violation according to the MIAA rules.

The bell rang at the end of the day (2:20) and within a few minutes Connie noticed that one of the men, Scott Moses, was seated in the guidance office again with a visitor pass. She asked him what he was doing and he said that it was after school now and he wanted to track down the students to make sure they filled out the applications. Scott explained that he knew his Superintendent well and this would be OK. As she began to explain that he couldn’t do this again, Scott walked out of guidance and began talking with one of the students, (redacted) in the hallway. She then got in touch with Mark Keenen to alert him of the situation. Scott did not check back into the office and used his old visitors pass to re-enter the building.

After some investigating, it turns out that Scott Moses and Jason Ruiz are the JV basketball coaches for Smith Vocational High School. The students they were attempting to make contact with were four of our male 9th grade boys basketball players. I spoke with (redacted) about his interaction with Scott outside of the guidance office after school and he explained that Scott wanted him to fill the application out to Smith Vocational so he could attend the following year. (redacted) also told him that he wasn’t sure if he wanted to apply and that was the end of the conversation. (redacted) also told me that he and his brother attended a Smith Vocational Basketball game during the season after an invitation from Scott.

My first reaction to hearing about this story was, this idiot MUST be from Long Island. He simply must be. So I looked up Scott Moses on Facebook

So how bout this fucking guy? Apparently Smith Vocational JV basketball is big time round these parts. Sending the JV coach to walk into Amherst-Pelham Regional High School and literally force the school into lock down in order to lock up four freshmen commits. Oh yea, the only problem is all of these kids evidently like where they go to high school now. Think that’s stopping this fucking guy though? Yea right. You don’t become the JV boys basketball coach at Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School by playing nice nice.

Amherst-Pelham is a big high school. There’s probably lots of prim looking star gazers for 15 year old boys in that school. And you want them to transfer to tech school? So they can hang out with the girls from woodshop and play for a basketball team that’s going absolutely nowhere? Newsflash – there’s a reason they hadn’t already gone to school there. They like where they go to school and now they think you’re a psychopath who forced their school to go into lockdown and kept kids there until past 3:00.

First of all, who the hell do these clowns think they are? Derek fucking Kellogg? Who tries to poach 15 year olds during school hours? Loved the fake swag these guys brought with them into the school. Just marched right in there and demanded that the kids leave their class so they could be coerced into making a decision that their parents should definitely be on board with. Because fuck their classes right? This is big time basketball we’re talking about at Smith Vocational and Agricultural. Who needs to finish their math test? That’s child’s play. You won’t need to know any of that shit after you sign your first shoe deal.

Loved this part:

Connie explained that we do not do this and she could give the applications to the students at the end of the day. The men explained that they were the boys’ basketball coaches and they need to have them fill the application out right away.

Connie, do you know who the fuck you’re talking to? This is the Junior Varsity HEAD COACH at Smith Vocational and Agricultural High School, AND his volunteer friend Jason Ruiz. Ever heard of them?

Newsflash – you guys are juniors in college, and ONE of you is temporary employed at a school that I’ve never heard of and I assume sucks at basketball. I kind of understand where these idiots are coming from though. When I was 20 I was living in a UMASS world. I literally had no concept of reality. Even when I went home for the summers it was difficult getting used to civilian life. When you go to UMass you do whatever you wanna do, whenever the fuck you wanna do it. If you saw something you wanted you went out and got it. You didn’t wait to be signed in. You didn’t follow procedure you just did it.

Like this one time freshmen year I was completely banned from Patterson dormitory. Like, had a whole meeting with the RD and everything. Literally wasn’t allowed in the building for the next four years there. But I wanted to go in there, so I went whenever I pleased. Except it backfired this one time when Dawn the RA saw me on the third floor, and man that chick hated me!!! So I had to hide in my friend Kristie’s room and I hid under the bed. When Dawn came to the door it was with UMass Police. But Kristie refused to let them in the room, even though they said, “We know Turtleboy is in here.” Because at UMass you pretty much have a ridiculous amount of rights. You can just tell the authorities to go fuck themselves with no repercussions. So I slept under the bed that night. It was thrilling.

So in a way I guess I kind of understand where they’re coming from. But seriously, do you guys watch the news? Did you miss that whole Newtown CT thing last year? Yea, schools don’t fuck around anymore. You’re not allowed to just wander into a public high school and accost children into signing documents without their parents consent. People will understandably freak out when that happens, and that’s not a good look for your coaching career. Lesson learned.

Feel free to share your thoughts to keep the conversation going.

The real question is: If they are charged with a crime (trespassing, etc.), could Michael Erlich get the charges dismissed

I think he could. In fact, he’d probably file a counter-suit against the Amherst school district for infringing on his client’s civil rights to… accost 14 year olds. Or some crap.
