Back in the day a snow day was quite possibly one of the most exciting days of the year. The anticipation and excitement leading up to the announcement that there would be no school that day was nothing less than orgasmic. Of course in the end the joke was on you because it shortened your summer vacation, but nonetheless, you were living in the moment.

We’ve evolved a lot since then though, primarily in the way this information is broadcasted. Now you just go on Facebook or Twitter and find out the answer to all of your questions faster than it takes Anthony Weiner to create another online psedonym. Back in the day though it wasn’t that easy. You woke up like you normally would for school and went to the kitchen where Mom was waiting in her robe. She turned on WTAG and everyone waited patiently for them to get to our school district alphabetically.

Clinton 2 hour delay, Gardner closed, Grafton 2 hour delay, Leominster closed, Oxford no morning preschool……

Then Mom would tell everyone to shut up as your schools turn in the alphabet approached. As the moment approached as you waited to hear that sweet delicious announcement,

“Worcester Public Schools……closed”

Victory is ours!! It’s 6 AM. The possibilities of that day were endless, despite the lack of iPads. All we needed was one of those round saucers and some crisco and we were all set for the day. Kind of sucked for Mom because it meant more annoying and loud kids dragging wet snow through the house all day, but it also meant free labor for getting all the snow shoveled.

Well apparently not everyone likes it when schools close. A lot of people that are my age apparently remember their childhoods very differently from mine. Evidently there were no snow days when we were younger and we all walked the six miles to school through countless storms. Uphill both ways!! According to these people this is primarily the reason that we are losing to China in everything now. Are these children as soft as Facebook commentators say? Hmmm. Let’s see how some people are reacting to the no school announcement on Fox Boston’s Facebook page…

You tell em Gino. Back in Geno’s father’s day kids not only went to school in two feet of snow, but the show was also wet!! Kids nowadays with their dry snow don’t know how good they have it. Apparently after they walked to school in two feet of snow their teachers never taught them anything about capitalization, or the difference between a comma and a period. But at least they made it unlike kids these days!!!

Yea guys!! Wait until it starts snowing and the roads get really bad before you cancel school. Yea, so what if a bunch of school buses crash into guard rails along the way? Kids these days need to build character and stop being babied like when he was GROING up. Nothing toughens a kid up like a good bus accident. Kids these days with their fancy periods and commas. Back in our day we just said everything on our mind in one continuous sentence. Toughen up slackers!!!

Wait a minute, you mean it’s not gonna snow? Apparently she knows something those guys with the fancy weather machines don’t know!! I know who’s gonna have the last laugh when it only snows two inches. Or will she be pissed? Hard to tell. Either way, everyone else is obviously wrong.

Yea, you teachers with your two paid days off!! Sure they’ll have to make those days up at the end of the year since you’re contractually obligated, but that should never, ever get in the way of a good Facebook rant. And all you teachers bragging about it on Facebook need to be a little more sensitive to us working folk. This would be my Facebook post if I was a teacher (which I am not):

You idiots!! Kids should be in school until it gets really, really dangerous. Then we should put them all on buses and have them drive all around the place and make it harder for sanders to do their job. As Carl points out, growing up THREW the 70’s and 80’s school was only cancelled a grand total of FIVE times. Ya got that? That’s 20 years and only 5 snow days!! And then those kids grew up and ruined the economy. And all you Mom’s out there worried about silly things like your kid’s well being need to seriously chill out and get a grip. Back in the 70’s and 80’s nobody cared about their kid’s safety and well being. It was basically like the Hunger Games. Kids just fought to the death for their districts honor and thought nothing of it. How do you expect your kids to fend for themselves if you’re always trying to make sure they live through the day? Geez Louise people!!

Raina, didn’t you read Carl’s post? He hates when you teachers brag about your paid days off. On a serious note, is this a bad look for teachers? Witnessed an interesting debate/argument on this one today. Are teachers rubbing it in everyone’s faces or acting unprofessional by doing this? I tend to say “no, simma down nah” but others think that it’s not a good look for teachers. Yea, isn’t technology the worst? Back in my day you had to go outside to the outhouse and dump out the leftover feces in the middle of the night if you had to go to take a midnight smash. Nowadays kids just wake up, sit on their magical flush toilets and go back to bed. Get rid of all technology. That includes fancy inventions like the wheel, and levers. We shouldn’t have anything that makes our lives easier. Ever.

You you fancy boy weatherman better be right this year or else!! I remember this one time back in 97 when you said it was gonna snow and it didn’t even snow!! What’s up with that? Sure, we started school earlier this year on August 27th, and coming back for one day of school on December 23rd is completely pointless, but that shouldn’t come in the way of a good Facebook rant!!

So what do you think of snow days? Feel free to share your thoughts in the comments to keep the conversation going.

My senior year up on Apricot St they sent us to school with 6″ on the ground already because “forecast said it dkd stop soon”, and it was the day before Christmas break. Another foot later and the buses couldn’t come up the hill to get us. For noon. An additional foot of snow in 4 hours. We had to walk down the hill so my friend’s dad could pick us up. Ever since then the city has been erring on the side of caution.

The only thing that stands out is the early AM update to the forecast predicting…Yup you’ve guessed it…2 inches of snow today.
