We’ve gotten a few emails from disgruntled Massholes who are fired up that they now have to pay for parking at state parks like Purgatory Chasm. Until yesterday we had zero interest in this story. That all changed when we decided to do a blog about the Top 10 Places To Swim in Worcester. We ventured all around the city taking photographs for the blog, and it was quick and easy to do. The only minor inconvenience was at the lone state park we went to – Lake Park. That’s where we were greeted by this sign:
Ummmmm, yea. You can EXPECT payment whenever you want. But under zero circumstances would any true Worcesterite EVER pay to park in Worcester, never mind at Lake Park. Especially since parking is incredibly easy on the street since the city decided to make this once two lane superhighway into a one lane bottleneck:
Our take on this is pretty simple – only a moron would ever pay to park at Lake Park. The lot was basically empty but the street was packed with crafty Worcesterites who parked their car for free and walked 50 feet into the “state park.” So ultimately this has no effect on anyone with a brain.
Besides that though, we now strongly feel that these increased fees are bullshit. If you wanna park at Salisbury Beach, it now costs you $16 instead of $9. Purgatory Chasm is $5 instead of free. Because someone has to pay for Deval Patrick’s curtains.
My question is, is Lake Park the only state park where you can avoid paying these bullshit fees by walking 50 feet? We might have to do a Turtleboy Tour de State Parks to let people know how they can fight this tyranny and keep their freedom. Happy 4th of July Turtle Riders!!!

I frequent lake park to run 3 to 5 days a week. It is completely random that anyone is even in the booth to collect money. Out of the 200 or so times I’ve been there in the past year and a half I’ve only been asked to pay 3 times. Honestly the first time I thought It was some scam. Each time I chuckled thanked them for their time, uturned and parked less than 10 seconds away from the entrance. Keep in mind there is another entrance that goes into lake park further down Lake Ave off a side street that is never manned with anyone asking for money.
Most state parks are only funded to have staff to collect fees from June 1 until August 31.

Of course, this is coming from the guy who thinks only ‘morons’ pay for disposing of old televisions or other hazardous waste. Who could forget TB proudly recounting tossing said stuff in the woods of a neighboring town rather than be a responsible citizen and pay to have it properly disposed of? Now that, people, is the true definition of a ‘moron’.
Most states in this country charge to use state parks. Quit your bitching.
So you just accept it? We pay enough in taxes ….. unless your one of those that doesn’t really pay taxes nor contribute to society.
Do truly disabled people have to pay to park in the handicap designated spots? Seems to me that a real issue here could be that able-bodied people can park and walk easily from the street and disabled folks are almost forced to pay the ridiculous fee? And I am assuming that most people with handicap plates do need them…but that may be another issue altogether…
I believe handicap parkers do not pay. That goes for at meters too.
Most of the parkers on the street are tennis players who have always been too cheap to pay for anything. The only ones who pay are the souls from Great Brook Valley who can least afford to pay.
Yeah, if they are fat bastards who won’t walk 50 feet.
This will only get worse if Boston gets the Olympics. The state will need ever penny it can get.
Not to mention… WHERE THE HELL WILL I PARK IN 9 YEARS???
New Hampshire!
Moore State Park in Paxton does not charge for parking…….YET
Do they only do it a little while during the year? We go out there in the spring/fall and never had anyone ask for money.
Well, nobody working there asked for money.
