Charter schools are a scam. We’ve been over this time and time again. Conservatives think that they have to like charter schools because they’ve been brainwashed by right wing media to believe that teachers unions are the main reason for “failing schools.” Obviously you’d have to be pretty dumb to believe that schools are failing, and not individual students. Obviously.
But being in favor of charter schools is actually the exact opposite of what conservatism is supposed to be all about. It costs the state millions of dollars in taxpayer money to open new buildings, maintain them, hire new faculties, pay their health insurance, and then send back a portion of the funding to their sending schools. This is not what it means to be fiscally conservative. Neither is the philosophy that individualism does not exist. Because to fall for the myth of “failing schools” suggests that the individual students played no part in their own failures. Instead it was a group effort that failed.
But most importantly charter schools tend to be SJW training camps. They are governed by unelected boards of trustees, who can come up with any curriculum they want. Like the Seven Hills Charter School in Worcester, which forced kids to pose for pictures while holding up signs listing imaginary “microaggressions” that hurt their precious feelings. The best part was when it turned out that they literally plagiarized these signs directly off of a Buzzfeed article, and thought no one would notice.
Oops!! This is apparently what “conservatives” think is a good use of their tax dollars. Because….fuck teacher’s unions!!
Anyway, low and behold it turns out Holyoke has one of these SJW breeding ground, masquerading as a school. And the name is just too perfect:
The Paulo Freire Social Justice Charter School
I swear to god. “Social justice charter school.”
Of course anyone who’s been paying attention to the news the last couple years knows that “social justice” is just codeword for far left, radical butthurt political correctness. This is what “conservatives” think is money well spent. Because at least those greedy teacher’s unions will think twice about asking for a 1% raise next time their contract is up!!
Let’s check out what the Paulo Freire Social Justice Charter School is all about.
Here’s their charter, which lists the following in their mission statement:
“At PFSJCS social justice means that all students, regardless of race, culture, income, abilities, or sexual preference, have equal access to a quality education, necessary resources, and the opportunity to live productive and successful lives.”
Because apparently the public schools where these kids come from do NOT give equal access to all students. Only white kids.
Under “communities to be served” they state,
“Out of the six communities two perform in the bottom ten percent on State-wide standardized tests of academic achievement; one has the highest teen pregnancy rate as well as the highest dropout rate in the state; and bullying has been a major focus for another. To 4 combat these concerns these communities would greatly benefit from a high school that sets high expectations, achieves excellent academic performance, offers successful community engagement, and a strong social justice mission and vision”
“Out of the six communities TWO perform….” This is what we are paying for. A group of illiterate board of trustee social justice warriors who haven’t learned the difference between to, two, and too. Looks like they haven’t figured out the whole, “your, you’re” or “it’s, its” thing either:
Notice that they list the big reason for creating their school is to take kids away from schools with high teen pregnancy and dropout rates, and low standardized test scores. First of all, “high teen pregnancy rates” is such an urban myth. Newsflash – chicks are getting pregnant in white suburban communities too. But their parents make sure they get an abortion so it won’t fuck up their shots at getting into Northeastern. In Holyoke you just push out a baby, throw it on the pile, and let the taxpayers take care of the rest.
Secondly, how does taking these kids out of those public schools improve the public schools? If these kids are allegedly being brought down by their pregnant, failing classmates, then how is it a solution to take all the good, non-pregnant kids and put them in the social justice charter school?
Thirdly, any school that values standardized test scores is a pretty shitty school where I wouldn’t want my kids going. Just sayin.
Under “Social Justice Awareness”, the school offers the following:
“During summer orientation and throughout the school year, students will be instructed in philosophical, historical, and cultural social justice values. They will build an understanding of oppression and privilege as well as a respect for diversity.”
And understanding of oppression and privilege. In other words, they’re teaching the theory and concept of “white privilege” as if it is indeed a scientific fact. Basically it’s a training ground for the next generation to whine about all the oppression that’s keeping them back, instead of teaching them to overcome obstacles in front of them.
Then there’s the math curriculum:
“Math is an instrument for detailing social justice issues and developing critical consciousness. Math can be used as a tool to examine and compare the inequities that exist by examining: population rates, corporate salaries, economic concerns, infant mortality rates, defense budgets, and demonstrate, in graphic terms, the way people are oppressed and marginalized.”
In other words, the whole point of learning math is to find new ways to complain about being oppressed and how unfair it is that some people make more money than other people.
But wait, it gets better – kids at the social justice charter school call their teachers by their first name, and hall passes are rubber duckies:
“Paulo Freire teachers are on a first-name basis with their students. They issue hall passes in the form of teddy bears, rubber duckies and duct tape purses.”
You can’t make this stuff up. This too:
English teacher Jacqueline Tuttle, 27, of Sunderland, who goes by “Jaq,” said, for example, that by the end of last school year, she heard students in the hallway saying to each other, “Stop colluding to your own oppression.”
Oh good, they’re teaching kids to say, “stop colluding to your own oppression.” What a valuable use of taxpayer money.
Seriously, check out their charter if you want your head to explode. The school has less than 400 kids who they bus in from all over, and costs the taxpayers over $5 million a year. But yea, way to go conservatives. I guess this is what you wanted.
But this is the most disturbing part – students organized a walkout with black lives matter activists. Kids were allowed to just walk out of class. At the 37 second mark the leader asks students, “Do y’all ever feel safe when you feel a police officer in your neighborhood” to which they all scream, “no!!”
Anyway, their Facebook page is pretty telling. Let’s check it out….
In January the social justice charter school organized a field trip to Hartford to protest Trump’s inauguration, under the guise of being a “women’s march.”
The mere fact that they’re sponsoring and organizing to go to a march, which was ONLY being held because Trump own the election, is clearly a publicly funded school taking a side on a variety political issues. Check out the sign that’s being held by one of the teachers on the right:
“My body, my choice.” She’s protesting for abortion rights as part of a school field trip, and bringing kids with her. You’re allowed to be pro-choice. You’re also allowed to be pro-life. You’re just not supposed to force your opinion on kids when you’re in a position to influence them so greatly.
More importantly, they’re teaching these girls to be victims. “We can not succeed when half of us are held back.” Why are they letting kids make signs saying “we can not succeed?” In other words, they’re setting these kids up for failure by giving them a litany of excuses. Instead of teaching them to overcome any alleged discrimination they face, this school is teaching them to whine and protest about being held back.
And they’re bringing another busload of impressionable children with one of their teachers to see the very fair and balanced Rachel Maddow speak at Smith College:
I’m sure Mad Dog Maddow presented both sides equally as this presentation.
The school heavily promoted the Obama family:
Not that there’s necessarily anything wrong with the Obama family. It’s just the school’s job to take sides.
They fed into the myth that their “supporter,” Mayor Ales Morse, was “threatened” for being gay, because a political opponent left a note in his mailbox telling him that he was “going down” in the next election:
The school regularly used its social media platform to urge families to vote certain ways on ballot initiatives:
And they publicly mourned their “family,” Alexander Torres Hernandez, after he stole a woman’s minivan, led cops on a high speed chase, and then decided to swim across a canal to freedom, where he drowned.
The hat. Nuff said. But yea, public schools are the ones harboring problem students. Not charter schools. This is money well spent.
Of course the primary reason charter schools are nothing more than publicly funded private schools is the fact that there is an application process and limited slots:
If they were public schools then they’d be open to the public, and anyone who wanted to go there could do so. But they’re not. They’re just multi-million dollar social justice warrior playgrounds. And conservatives are apparently dumb enough to believe that this is a good thing.

If you were ever going to give the State of Massachusetts an enema, you would stick it in Holyoke.
Which would thrill the mayor.
They need unions because they fail at educating children, plus we need dumb people to sign up to fight kike wars. The normal Americans would never fight on the anti-Christ side
How can you write blog after blog after blog exposing the corruption and stupidity in public schools, then get all pissy when people offer an alternative to traditional public schools? Might be worth trying something new. Spending per student is way up, results are the same or going down. Explain why I should continue backing public schools when they clearly aren’t delivering. I am a product of public schools and went to WPI. I got smoked my first year by private school kids, and vocational school kids. Yes, vocational school kids. They had many of my “intro to” engineering classes while they were juniors and seniors at voke schools. I took every AP class where I went, too.
With data showing that as many as 40% of students need remedial classes to be able to attend community colleges it is safe to conclude that Public Schools are failing to adequately educate our children.
Therefore we owe it to our children to try different education models. Only the educrats that have driven out educators are afraid of change to this failing system.
This charter school with its harebrained policies not withstanding.
Quick note: their charter isn’t using ‘two’ incorrectly; it’s saying that’s the number of communities they serve whose public school students underperform on MCAS. Possibly they should have put a comma after ‘communities’.
(Can’t disagree with the rest of your commentary re: the charter/their goals, however.)
Just think about it. You have first grade teachers earning close to 100k a year because they have Tenure. Good for you that you have been teaching kids for 20 years how to tie a double knot. Or maybe move up or move out of the way for teachers just graduating and need a job?
Selfish pricks!
So if I said 2+2=4 according to their math I am a racist.
Advanced Math And Science Academy in Marlborough is a top notch charter School. Would love to hear what turtleboy has to say about this school. These are genius students that do NOT belong in public schools — being dragged down by less than average students and whiny SJW teachers. There ARE good charter schools.
Normally I agree with most of your blogs but you missed the target by a mile with this story. My personal experience with charter schools has been positive. Maybe when public schools start offering more substance and improved academics, there wouldn’t be such a strong need and desire for a different option.
Just because the hypocritical libs have figured out how to co-opt and cash in on the charter school movement to advance their public school Leftist indoctrination doesn’t mean that all charters are like this.
Liberal TB needs to get with the philosophy of this blog and be honest when it comes to schools. Libs run them and have created the SJW and low info generations that keep them in power.
What am the difference between a peeping Tom and a pickpocket?
A pickpocket snatches watches!
TB, you should send this to President Trump and Betsy DeVos. They seem to like twitter…
So many issues here. First, Alex Torres Hernandez dying was just helping clean up the gene pool, no more no less. No mourning here chicas. Michelle Obama is a tranny. There’s a reason Joan Rivers died 2-3 weeks after saying just that….so….there’s that. Let’s see, what else…..oh, yeah, let us not forget that there are plenty of conservative scumbags too. The left doesn’t have a monopoly on shitbags. Ok, let’s keep going. Victimhood! Y’know what’s great about slavery and the holocaust? It’s in the past, so it’ll always be there. It a card you can play for the rest of your life to cover any criticism you get for being less than! Wow! How Awesome! Last, Pres Trump….can you please put the social justice charter school in some military crosshairs, please. Then say it was an accident. Or like TWA flight 800 in 1996. Just blame it on someone or something else when you blow it up.
Dear Zephyr Cat,
“Cleaning up the gene pool” is quite inconsiderate, especially considering you did not interact directly with this young man. Such a statement is indicative of your lack of humanity and showcases a particular ignorance as well as absent empathy within you.
When people die, people die. They may commit the worst crimes or atrocities however you do not know what it’s like to bear a child and have to see them off to their grave. Until you can understand that you’ll merely think of it as “cleaning the gene pool”.
I’ll go even further. Any teacher who allows students to wear pajamas to school and graduates them knowing they can’t read or write at a High School level should be fired and put in jail for fraud. Stop releasing these burdens onto society.
I don’t dump shit on your lawn so stop dumping this garbage into society.
Teachers and teachers unions are a joke.
Example = Let’s say you’re a seventh grade Algebra teacher for 20 yrs. The same curriculum, the same tests basically the same text books. Guess what loser you don’t deserve a raise because all you know is seventh grade algebra and every kid who has passed your class is moving on because they are clearly smarter than you.
Get a life you are entitled to minimum wage.
You are obviously saying this in jest or you are a complete moron.
Disagree all you want Bird I’m just saying the seventh grade is the longest three years in a Puerto Ricans life. Imagine being stuck there for 20 years.
Everything is fine in public schools. The department of education and the unions do a great job of educating all children and have nothing to do with the pace of cost per child education increases. There is no reason to try anything different. Nothing to see here. Government does everything it takes on with excellency.
I wouldn’t say, “Only in MA” to a SJW charter school, but I do hope it will stay that way.
This type of indoctrination occurs at many public schools. Look at the administrator of the Southbridge schools and say that is not a common occurrence.
1. As if this stuff doesn’t go on at some public schools…
2. Don’t blame conservatives – blame the non-conservative MA officials who approved the charter for this specific school.
You’re right. Charter schools, or voucher programs, can work, but they have to be managed correctly.
This is not a school. This is propaganda. And they’re not even trying to hide it anymore.
Selective brainwashing continues and is very much accepted.
Firsties!!
