I never had anything against Kobe Bryant, despite the fact that he played for the Celtics arch-rival, beat us in the 2010 NBA Finals, and was a little bit pretentious throughout most of his career. I didn’t hate Kobe the way I hated LeBron for a couple reasons
- Kobe won without Shaq twice. LeBron cannot come close to winning without teaming up with other superstars.
- Kobe just played basketball and didn’t try to shove political bullshit down our throats like LeBron does.
His death today is a reminder of our mortality. When you see someone as rich and powerful and famous as Kobe have his life taken in an instant, we’re all reminded how it could happen to any of us. I didn’t know Kobe, but I’d be lying if I said this whole thing wasn’t incredibly sad. What makes it worse is that 8 others died with him, including his 13 year old daughter Giana. He had to sit in that helicopter as it was going down, looking at her, and knowing that not only was he going to die, but he couldn’t do anything to save her either. That’s gotta be the most helpless and terrifying way to go out.
Anyway, there’s a lot of really bad takes going on right now, including the whole, “soldiers die every day but people are whining about Kobe.”

Kobe Bryant was never convicted of or tried in a rape case. He was accused 16 years ago of raping a woman at a hotel in Colorado. It never went anywhere because the alleged victim wouldn’t testify, and the civil trial was settled out of court for a cash settlement. Kobe said it was consensual, she didn’t. I’m not saying she’s lying or telling the truth. But the fact of the matter is Kobe is legally innocent, and there was no “half confession.” Kobe said he was sorry as part of the settlement, and reiterated that he disputed that it was not consensual.
Although I truly believe this encounter between us was consensual, I recognize now that she did not and does not view this incident the same way I did. After months of reviewing discovery, listening to her attorney, and even her testimony in person, I now understand how she feels that she did not consent to this encounter.
If the victim wanted him punished and tried as a rapist, she could’ve done so. She chose not to. I know a lot of victims are scared to do that, but Kobe didn’t pressure her not to testify. She made that choice on her own.
Either way, the fact that she’d use her platform to smear this guy who just died alongside his daughter, just minutes after it occurred, is so tone deaf and God awful that only a member of the mainstream media would be stupid enough to tweet it out. She immediately got ratioed to high heaven, and in classic MSM fashion she found a way to victimize herself in follow up tweets.

We can use this for Kobe, or against him, as it’s pretty malleable in these instances and according to the whims of culture (pound me too, race) or the competence of individual judges, corruption of lawyers, and juries who don’t understand or are willfully disregardful of the Law (in the criminal case of O.J. Simpson).
When going up against an individual or an institution who has money and fame to fight charges (film stars and their enablers, pro-athletes and their enablers, the Catholic Church, the FBI, The DoD, State and Federal Governments) indefinitely it’s an uphill battle through mud and machine gun fire. The case went off the rails when they coerced the two girls into perjury to support that claim, and it was discovered that one of the two girls had had an abortion beforehand, and that both were town pumps. That last bit doesn’t really matter, but the abortion/put-out combo shows they weren’t ‘innocent’ to the judge and the jury. Flynn was just a dumbass. He was acquitted.
The bottom line: Don’t be a liar, and be consistent. Kobe was both and neither.
