Two people were shot outside of La Cava in Lawrence on Sunday night. A Lowell woman has been pronounced dead and a young man remains injured but in stable condition.
La Cava, formally known as Marabu Cafe, is located at the intersection of Union and Methuen street, one street over from Essex street where Corpus Christi church was packed just hours earlier for Easter Sunday services.
There are still a ton of details that the Lawrence Police Department have yet to release to the public but I was able to go through some local Facebook threads and am still trying to piece together the information. Witnesses interviewed by investigators claim that there was a verbal altercation inside about 20 minutes before the shooting took place and it’s been confirmed that the two incidents were related. There was a white sedan that took off from Sweeney’s liquor store on Essex Street but it’s still uncertain if that person is related to the shooting. Honestly if I was hanging out, scoring a last minute bottle of booze and heard gunshots I’d be hauling ass out of there too. The two victims were taken to LGH and then med-flighted to Boston.
I will continue to update/edit information as the day goes on but if the photos above are in fact the two victims of the shooting, they are identified as Jazmin Patrocino of Lawrence (right) and Arita Padilla (left), also knows as Aracelys A Valdez De Leon although news reports have listed her name as Arielis Valdez.
First things first let’s be clear on one thing. No matter what the circumstances or whether the argument inside prior to the shooting had anything to do with what happened outside, there is no reason for gunning someone down on the sidewalk. Period. These two people have families, friends and CHILDREN that they likely won’t be able to go home to ever again and it breaks my heart and infuriates me to no end.
I am so fucking sick and tired of watching the news everyday and seeing people murdered, robbed, beaten and overdosing in the streets of Lawrence and Methuen on a DAILY BASIS. Our streets and rivers are littered with syringes and yet I hear people say all the time that Lawrence “isn’t that bad” and try to downplay what goes on in broad daylight. Let’s get real. Lawrence IS that bad. So bad, in fact, that it’s landed itself in the top 100 most dangerous cities in the United States more often than not over the past 10 years. Why people choose to deny this fact is beyond me but apparently they aren’t watching the same news stations and reading the same newspapers as I am.
The shooting on Sunday night is the second shooting that happened in Lawtown over the weekend. At 2 a.m. on Saturday police were called to the area of Lowell Street/Broadway after a Revere man was shot multiple times outside of a club. Police are searching through surveillance footage in order to try to ID the shooter(s) but the man suffered fatal injuries. He has been identified as Abdul Lopez of Lowell.
There was a shooting on Park Street on Friday. Two women were victims of a drive-by on March 25th, An 18 year old was shot and killed on Forest Street on March 8th. Another man was gunned down on Trinity Street on February 16th.
I see drug arrests plastered all over the Eagle Tribune every single day and we aren’t talking small quantities. This isn’t scoring a couple of Adderall to cram for midterms or getting hooked up with a few hits of ecstasy to take when you go see Dead & Company at Fenway when your stoner cousins come home from UNH. We’re talking $1.2MIL worth of fentanyl seized on the Lawrence/Methuen line, trafficked in from New York in January. We’re talking 3 Kilos/$4MIL of heroin being intercepted after it was packed into furniture in Mexico, received in N.Y. and hidden with fox urine in a glove-box en route to MA in March. We’re talking 180 people being arrested in one drug sweep alone.
The list goes on and on and on..
If you can honestly sit back and say that Lawrence isn’t 90% shithole you’ve been drinking dirty river water or licking paint off the walls of an ancient triple decker and you better run your ass to Express Care and get your lead/mercury levels tested.
My thoughts and condolences are with the family and friends of the two people who were ruthlessly and senselessly gunned down earlier. We need to start coming together as a community and stop turning a blind eye to the crime being committed right under our noses everyday. You want change? Act. If you see someone selling drugs, neglecting their kids, stealing, etc. CALL THE FUCKING POLICE.
I wish I had an enlightening, feasible solution to the problems going on but I feel as though Lawrence has been a dump for so long that it’s almost like everyone just accepts it at this point. I get it. It’s almost impossible to imagine it REALLY being cleaned up and not just managed(ish). Before people from this area start ragging on me and getting all butthurt please know that I love living in the MV. I’ve been here almost my entire life. However, people need to step it up, be better parents and raise kids who aspire to go further in life than graduating from The Voke and earning side money chopping cars and stealing rims. We don’t need any more convenience stores, barber shops, hair salons and hole in the wall bars either. Let’s face it, there’s no goddamn sense in passing the torch to the next generation if the torch is unlit or being used solely to smoke crack outside of Los Tigres.
