Welcome to the Worcester Summer of Love 2015, where everyone gets shot, no one saw anything happen, and Mayor Joe Petty and City Manager Ed Augustus assure you that the biggest problem plaguing the city is a blog written by a boy on a turtle.
Seriously though, who’s getting shot today? Granted right now it’s only gang bangers that are taking one for the team, but how long until a civilian, or someone who plans on living past the age of 25 gets hit by some friendly fire? Yesterday there was yet another double shooting in the Green Island area in broad daylight, at the heaviest traffic time of the day, right next to the magnificent clusterfuck of an intersection ever created – Kelley Square. (This is a pro-Kelley Square blog, don’t get it twisted).
Basically three dudes were in car at the Millbury St/Endicott St light near Crompton Park. Someone walked up to it and started firing, hitting two of his intended targets. But because it’s Worcester, he couldn’t finish the job. One got out and started stumbling around in shock. The lone unscathed party jumped from the backseat, into the driver’s seat, and drove through Kelley Square and down Green Street, before stopping the car at the intersection with Green and McGrath Boulevard (because that light is ALWAYS fucking red!!).
The two least surprising things about this whole thing are, 1) the “victims” are not cooperating with the police, and 2) nobody died. Because Worcester gangsters might be the worst shooters in the history of gun violence. I mean, you had them point blank at a red light, and you somehow found this too difficult a position to finish them off with a headshot. I mean, don’t they watch The Wire? Snoop and Chris Partleau would’ve had these guys in the Beacon Street vacants by now. Do they EVER have a day set aside for target practice? Don’t gangsters still shoot cans behind the Grafton Street plaza? Come on man, act like you’ve been there before.
Luckily both of the victims have full time jobs and their health insurance will be paying for their medical bills. LOL. I’m just kidding, we all know that you’re paying for it.
Look, the fact that they’re not cooperating means they clearly want to police themselves. So if you’re the City of Worcester you have two options – 1) create a Hamsterdam where they can do whatever they wanna do and kill each other at will, or 2) start going old school Rudy Guliani on the keeping it real patrol.
As much fun as the the Hamsterdam idea could be, it’s not realistic. But clearly the level of violence in this city is out of control, and part of the blame for that lies on the people who are in charge. They have continued to throw money at programs and groups like Mosaic Cultural Complex, which obviously have failed in their mission to keep these people from killing each other. They continue to give into the demands of anti-police career criminals like Kevin Ksen, and their continued calls for LESS policing.
This is the result. Worcester deserves better than this. A few months back Joe Petty famously said, “Worcester is safe.” Because that’s just what Joe Petty does. He says everyone is doing a good job. He said the same thing about Lisa Dyer. But the reality is that he has no fucking clue about what is really going on, and he’s too gutless a political hack to take on the hippies who continue to insist on less policing. He’d rather try to please everyone by telling us all what a good job EVERYONE is doing than confront reality.
But we all know that Worcester needs change. Old school Guliani change. And that change will happen at the ballot box in November, when Michael Gaffney is elected mayor. Luckily Councilor Gaffney has petitioned the city to increase the police presence, rather than decrease it so as to please the Kevin Ksen’s, Joyce McNickles, and RBG’s of the world:

Kind add the following item to the agenda, circulate it for the other councilor’s consideration, and notify the proper parties:
Due to the continuing violence that appears to be escalating from last year’s high number of shootings in our city, request an oral report from the City Manager and/or Chief of Police on the plan to combat this increasing public safety issue. Further, request that City Council authorize any emergency funds needed be immediately transferred to battle the threat. Such funds to be used as deemed necessary by law enforcement and to include the authorization of additional resources or personnel required to fulfill the mission to restore public safety.

At least someone gets that this is an actual crisis. Meanwhie, where is Kate Toomey? How does she keep finishing so high without EVER taking a stand on an important issue? Phil Palmieri was up at Boynton Park trying to get some west side dog owner votes the other day, but why hasn’t he issued a statement about this Worcester Summer of Love? Their silence makes them part of the problem. Because it’s only a matter of time before a civilian or a police officer gets caught up in this gang war. Are we going to wait for that to happen while Toomey and Palmieri are shaking hands and posing for pictures at the Pickle Barrel? Or is the City of Worcester going to recognize this for the emergency that it is?

What is outrageous is no city leader shows they are damn mad about what is going on in Dodge City. No emotion at all . Toomey and others are MIA either down the Cape or in hiding and have no clue what to say. Mayors in other cities would hold press conferences, show emotion, and have a plan that people will have confidence in. To show that they care and not afraid to stand up to the gang bangers. Nothing will change until take charge elected officials emerge.

These young men’s fathers and grandfather’s, the real G’s of the 1990’s would just look down and shake their heads over the new generation but instead they are blissfully ignorant of whatever happened to all them kids and worry instead about how their case worker thinks they are handling life on the outside.
Palmieri used to be a probation officer, so he knows exactly what these dipsticks that are shooting up our streets are up to. And he knows their habits. He’s the right guy to putt licked in place to keep them in knitting circles instead of crossfire circles in Kelly Square. Palmieri isn’t the problem. Toomey isn’t either. She and Economou are the biggest Worcester Cop and firefighter supporters out there.
The Rushton policy agenda has solved itself. Good, solid guy, no doubt, but bad policy.
