MassliveThe Cambridge Street area of Worcester was evacuated Thursday afternoon after a truck carrying acid crashed under a bridge. The truck struck the Providence & Worcester Railroad bridge on Cambridge Street just after 1 p.m., according to Worcester Deputy Fire Chief Martin Dyer. After striking the bridge, the top of the truck was crushed, impacting a drum carrying cumene hydroperoxide, Dyer said. The drum was a 55-gallon container, he said. That acid can be an irritant. Businesses and homes within a 300-foot perimeter of the crash were evacuated. The state hazmat team has been called to the scene. That bridge on Cambridge Street is notorious for trucks getting stuck under it. A warning sign hangs ahead of the bridge to warn drivers that the bridge is low and trucks could strike it. Worcester police said that detours would be in place in the area for a few hours.

The Goddamn overpass is a truck graveyard. Every couple of months there’s some ding-dong truck driver who is too stupid to read the signs, and too brainwashed to blindly follow his GPS, and they always end up smashing into this thing.

-5b23d355851962e4

Didn’t we learn anything from Michael Scott’s adventures with GPS?

But this is a billion times worse. You’re carrying friggin acid!! Not fish and chips or frozen chicken wigs. Acid. If you’re a truck driver and you’re not cognizant of the extremely dangerous and toxic shit that you’re delivering, then you shouldn’t be a truck driver. There are signs that he clearly did not read, because idiots these days blindly follow do what their iMachine tells them to do instead of thinking critically.

The next time this happens, and it will happen again, the truck driver’s company should have to pay for all the taxpayer resources that went into the cleanup. The truck driver should be arrested too, because that part of town is a big enough clusterfuck as it is. Seriously, drive down Cambridge Street during rush hour sometime. Wicked fun. Start making an example of these assholes.

Worcester should take lessons from the State of CT. Highway Dept.. I had reason this past Saturday to be in the very rural Town of Eastford, CT., population approx. 1,700 people. This rural town ‘had’ some of the most beautiful country roads you would want to travel on. The CT. State Highway Dept. went into the town a short while ago and told the selectmen they wanted the town to upgrade their road signs the town selectmen informed these people the town didn’t have the money at the moment in their coffers for the upgrade the state was requesting or requiring. Sooo out of the goodness of their (State of CT.) hearts they offered to erect new road signs at no cost to the town, the town’s people thought it was great and agreed to it assuming the signs would be in contrast with the towns rural settings. Wrong Again! The state erected probably as many signs as the whole City of Worcester, no I’m not exaggerating. All and I mean all the signs are fucking huge and the number of signs is absolutely incredible, every curve, yes every curve no matter how slight has at least 6-10 huge road signs each direction some of these curves are so slight you barely have to turn to steering wheel to navigate it. And to make matters even worse they must be using some new type of reflection paint on these huge signs. I have very good eyesight but these signs in the daylight with the sun shining will blind even a person with perfect eyesight, at night the reflection is completely blinding. I had the opportunity to speak with a few residents they are all disgusted and a few really wanted to cry because it’s so bad. The Ct. State Highway Dept., completely ruined the rural aspect of this once beautiful town. I have no doubt, no doubt at all someone was on the take for this job. As I write this post I wish I had taken some photos to post here like they say a picture is worth a thousand words or in this case a thousand plus signs. Anyway, if Worcester Highway Dept. wants or needs some pointers on road signs take a ride to Eastford, CT., it’s not that far away from you trust me you can’t miss the roads.

Isn’t this the spot where they have the hanging pipes that say “If your truck hits this you will hit the bridge?” I don’t see it possible to be going fast enough to not be able to brake after hearing hanging pipes clang.

I used to think that those pipe signs were demeaning, like talking down to drivers that should know better.

This mess added 20 minutes to my commute home. The new Southbridge Street Right Turn Only light made everyone turn left the light prior and the area is not set up to handle that much traffic.

Why not dig down to increase clearance?
It’s not that difficult to excavate, grade and repave.
Guess they’ll wait til something more serious gets spilled and people get seriously fucked up or something gets knocked off of a truck and kills someone.

The water table is too high. Floods enough as it is when there’s the slightest hint of moisture in the air.

I’m old enough to remember when the train fell off the bridge on Cambridge street .That bridge is indestructible so is the one on Southbridge street trucks get squashed by that one too. The bridge builders in Florida should get blueprints for building bridges from Worcester

I don’t see anything on that truck that states DANGER THIS FKN TRUCK HAS THE POTENTIAL TO KILL EVERYONE AROUND IT

Wonder what else rides around in the back of those unmarked trucks daily.

      Depends where they’re coming from.
But quite often, it’s José, Pedro, Miguel, Diego, Carlos, Pablo, Esteban, Carlito, Jesús, Joaquin, y Felipe.

There should have been diamond shaped signs with a 4 digit number on it.
The number is the actual type of acid, or whatever. 1075 is propane.

At least they didn’t make up a stupid word like getting “Cambridged” the way the asshat that blogs Universal Hub made up the word ” “Storrowed” for the clowns that get stuck under any overpass on Storrow drive.
He thinks he’s the height of wit for using that term.

Everywhere in NY there is big flashing signs “NO TRUCKS NO TRUCKS PASSENGER VEHICLES ONLY”
In Boston there is 1 small sign entering Storrow Drive.

They need to make it abundantly clear that, if you’re not sure then don’t do it.

If you drive a truck you avoid these bridges at all cost, truck driving 101. It’s the ones that are driving that don’t have a cdl, cough moslems, cough mexicants, cough, that do this stupid shit constantly. Why wasn’t this truck routed around the town, like any other toxic carrying truck would be? It’s almost like rules don’t apply when you drive illegally, hrm. Maybe DOT should actually do their jobs and pull these morons in and pull over the ones suspected and they’d be taken off the roads. Being the wife of a trucker I’ve seen some messed up shit, and head some awful stories of these sandal wearing walking stick bombs. They sure as hell aren’t using their shower credits at Pilot and TA!

I have a cdl and have only been to that area once. Luckily I was able to back up and get out.
However a little warning well before the bridge would be veneficial.

Well there’s the problem then, no signs warning truckers of the bridge, we have multiple rr bridges in town and there’s always a way around and always signs posted the mile before the last turn before you hit any bridge. Mass DOT needs to survey the area and start posting signs, otherwise it’s just gonna keep happening. If a driver isn’t aware of a low bridge for lack of signs, it really isn’t their fault.

there are warnings hanging above way before the bridge on both sides
dim wits with a g p s is the problem NOT THE BRIDGE OR THE CITY
thats the quality of over the road drivers nowadays ….

There used to be a railroad bridge near me that had a big dip in the road down and a big dip up with signs that said 12 foot something. Problem was the #s were based on the openings on each end from the sign to the ground. So Mr. Truck driver would drive in, everything cool, he’s going downhill for the next 15 – 20 feet. Then, the front of the truck starts to go up. Guess what that does when the back end of the truck isn’t under the bridge yet.

You ended up with an effective height of around 10 feet when the truck was hanging out past both ends of the bridge.

The city blamed the state, the state blamed the railroad. The state said the R.R.owned the signs and they had no jurisdiction. The R.R. said we have to measure the height by the accepted method of what the height is below the sign.

The city or state ended up putting a couple of blinking signs a few hundred feet before the bridge.
More or less the signs were telling the truckers, “Don’t believe your eyes of what the bridge sign says and don’t believe any books you have that say what the bridge height is”.

I felt sorry for the poor suckers whose height was less than what the R.R signs said and crunched a foot or two of the trailer.

When about I think about $50 million dollar of improvements were done, the state cut the incline under the bridge, and the rail road put a new bridge in about 2-3 feet higher than the older one.

By the time you see the sign it is too late. They should put other signs up to warn drivers well before 5he non compliant bridge heights.
