Anyone Who Thinks Woburn Teachers Should Work Extra Hours For Free Is A Moron

Teachers in Woburn are being crucified because they want to be paid for work that they do and don’t want to have their pay cut. Makes sense.

Saw this headline in the Boston Herald today:

The gist of this situation is simple – the Woburn Teacher’s Union contract has expired so they’re working under an old one. Teachers negotiate contracts every three years to get small cost of living increases and some other details of the job. As a result teachers at Woburn are being stiffed because they can’t come to an agreement with the school committee. The “problem” here according to the Herald is that the teachers are “working to contract.” AKA they are doing exactly what the contract says they have to do in order to remain employed, and nothing more. That means very limited extra help time after school, no chaperoning field trips to Washington D.C., etc.

However, high school English teachers are still correcting 125 persuasive essays a week. Elementary school teachers are still passing in lesson plans on a weekly basis and prepping for teaching four subjects a day. Middle school teachers are still acting as part time social workers, helping their kids navigate through the magical world of puberty. So they’re still doing lots of stuff that they’re not being paid for outside of the contract. This letter from a Woburn teacher says it all.

Logically the fact that teachers want to be compensated for their work has everyone fired up:

If you were a teacher and you only worked 180 days a year, then you were probably a really shitty teacher. Thanks for retiring.

Hey idiot, that’s exactly what they’re doing. The job they are paid to do. Because in grown up world people with Master’s degrees get paid for doing work. Cops make money doing overtime. Lawyers bill you by the hour. So why should teachers stay after school and work for free? Oh that’s right, they’ve been doing that out of the goodness of their hearts, you all got used to it, and now they’re being rewarded by getting stonewalled by the town.

Why are there still teacher’s unions? Well let me tell you about a very naughty woman named Lisa Dyer. She publicly humiliated one of her best teachers in an email to the faculty by calling her racist for suggesting that she was “color-blind” when it came to educating her students. The Superintendent sided with the principal. Then that teacher was essentially forced out of the school and sent to work at an alternative ed school.

Teachers, including the Woburn teachers, are also being forced to pay $55 to be fingerprinted in order to prove they are not interstate child molesters. Yea, lots of powerful unions bend over and let their members pay to have their 4th amendment rights taken away from them.

And did I mention that the “offer” from the town of Woburn drastically increases teachers contributions for health insurance, which more than negates the modest raises they would be given. Essentially it’s a pay cut.

But please, tell me more about how there is no need for teacher’s unions. Tell me more about how you can’t “fire” teachers.

What really pisses me off is that whenever this happens management hides behind the kids by playing the “it’s about the children card.” This is what the idiot mayor, Scott Galvin, said about the contract negotiations:

“I find it very hard to believe that teachers, who care about students’ success, would use the class of 2016 as pawns in their contract negotiations with the city,” Galvin wrote on Twitter last month.

Wait a minute, the TEACHER’s are the ones using the kids as pawns? Dude, you just used them as pawns in that sentence. No this is about the teachers, not the kids. The kids just happen to be caught in the middle because their leaders are too afraid to cut waste of space administrators and instead are trying to cut teacher’s take home pay. You want your kids to go on field trips during school vacations and get extra help after school, yet you vote no on overrides. Makes sense. Schools can just print more money anyway.

The bottom line is that this is yet another example of how under appreciated teachers are. Anyone who thinks they work 180 days a year for seven hours a day should be brought into town square so the townspeople can throw tomatoes at them. Who do you think corrects your kid’s tests? Who do you think writes the lesson plans? Who do you think pays out of pocket for all those extra school supplies the town isn’t funding? Why are teachers there on know your school nights? Why are teachers meeting with parents, calling them when something is wrong, and meeting with them for IEP meetings? When do you think these things are done?

As for the summers off, teachers aren’t paid for that. Thus it’s not a vacation, it’s a forced furlough. That’s why so many teachers have second jobs in the summer. If they miss a day of school they are docked 1/183rd, not 1/365th of their salary, because they are only paid for the days in which school is in session. These are facts. Stupid facts!!!

Yesterday in Worcester teachers at Wawecus Road Elementary School noticed that one of their students was walking with a limp. Since they are mandatory reporters they reported it to authorities, who investigated the situation and found out that the child was being abused. The mother has since been arrested. Keeping in mind that Bella Bond and Jeremiah Oliver were both murdered before teachers had a chance to intervene, and Jack Loiselle was starved into a coma, these teachers very likely saved the life of a five year old. If you’re not willing to give a fair contract to people who save the lives of small children, then you’re just an asshole. Period.

In reference to the person’s comment about how saying you are “color blind” as being racist… I think the main problem is the fact that people assume too much of their identity as merely the things that were an accident of birth… the color of your skin, your grandparents nationality, all of these things are not sources of pride. If we as a country starting valuing what people DO, instead of the things they think they ARE, then things would start to get better. As George Carlin once said, why would anyone feel pride in something that is an accident of birth like nationality or skin color? Let’s focus less on being a victim of others opinions, and more about taking pride in our actions and accomplishments, instead of demanding the respect that comes from these things.

The color blind thing is a real issue, that phrase makes me so angry. Anyone who says they are color blind is the worst kind of racist, the ignorant one who thinks they are a good guy. When you say you’re colorblind you are basically saying “i see everyone as white” to anyone who isn’t white, this is truly an insult. Many people are not white, and do not appreciate the stripping of their identity to make white people feel they are being less offensive. And because most races have proud heritages, it IS an insult to anyone who is proud of their skin. I get why white people don’t see it as a racist comment, they are basically trying to say they see all people as equal but that is not what that statement is being heard as. It’s being heard as color doesn’t matter, and it will only ever “not matter” to white people, because their heritage isn’t generally linked to the color of their skin. It’s tough enough being an adult navigating this world, but to be a child hearing the color of your skin doesn’t matter, when it most certainly matters to you, can be devastating and cause pain and shame. Calling yourself colorblind isn’t just racist, it’s ignorant and hurtful. Sorry about the rant, but it’s very important people realize the distinction here.
