Several reliable sources have confirmed with Turleboy Sports that Deputy Police Chief Steve Sargent will be the next Chief of Police in the City of Worcester. The announcement is expected to be made this week, and it’s a great choice. Everyone likes Steve Sargent. Literally everyone we spoke with. Often these appointments are political and people will complain that\ the kiss ass got the job. But that’s not the case here because everyone has rave reviews about Steve Sargent and the work he’s done for the community. He’s in his mid 50’s and he’s run six marathons. He goes to community meetings and he has an innate ability to keep his cool around hippies.
Law enforcement runs in the family as well, as both his father and son have served on the force. His father is a retired police lieutenant.
Another one of his sons is Rob Sargent, a Worcester Public Schools teacher who Turtleboy proudly endorsed for City Council last year.
Old Balls and Clive McFarlane will whine about nepotism and the good ol’ boy network and racism and chief diveristy officers and blah, blah, blah. But the bottom line is that this is the type of appointment Worcester needs more of. We don’t need to hire people from outside the city who have no clue what they’re doing, a la Melinda Boone. We need Worcester people who know the city and the people they serve. We need people who are invested in the community instead of carpetbaggers using Worcester as a resume builder. And now the public schools and the police department are led by well-liked, capable, and experienced leaders in Steve Sargent and Maureen Binienda.
Great day for the City of Worcester. Great day for Turtleboy.
