America’s birthday has arrived, and local citizens are partaking in all the usual time-honored annual July traditions that have been American mainstays for many decades. Fireworks displays, our nation’s flag hanging from front doorways, cookouts, cape cod getaways, camping trips, bonfires on the beach, and, best of all, the Brockton fair.

Prophetically and ironically, even the YouTube ad that was created to promote this year’s Brockton fair accidentally contains a news story about a gang-related stabbing which occurred in Brockton earlier this year.

11401262_935024945431_6667162673408925177_n

Surprisingly no one has gotten shot at the Brockton Fair……yet. Unlike last year

This year’s fair also began with some dangerous criminal activity. Despite being charged up to $25 for parking, fair-goers were enraged on Friday night because of a perceived lack of parking-lot security after several cars had their windows smashed and items were robbed from vehicles. Even despite warning signs such as this —

11705304_1638548283054565_5247924265143710712_n

Among the many other complaints fair patrons had, was the lengthy delay of the fireworks display which kept families at the Fairgrounds until the wee hours of the morning.  Originally scheduled for 10:30 pm, things did not get underway until midnight.  Many neighborhood residents opined that the tardiness of the start to the event kept them awake far later than normal, while others feared for their safety as they were unable to differentiate whether they were hearing pops and bangs from the fireworks display or typical neighborhood gunfire.

On night number 2, the fireworks display started a little earlier than expected, as one of the cars participating in the demolition derby exploded and became completely engulfed in flames.  A large portion of the grandstand area was immediately evacuated, and miraculously, firemen were able to put out the blaze before any spectators or participants were injured.

One of the classic staples of the Brockton Fair has always been the people-watching.  It continues to be world-renowned, and well worth the price of admission alone. Among the many other events and sights to behold (aside from the toothless carneys trying to con you into shooting a basketball into a hoop that’s half the size of the basketball), was the demolition derby, a circus, wrestling matches, live music, and a magic show. Despite some confusion however, this chain-smoking pregnant woman enjoying an adult beverage was not supposed to be part of the carnival show.

Sweet baby Jesus. That is the most Brockton thing I’ve ever seen. And she does not appreciate being “stocked”

With two nights down and 9 to go, let’s hope during this challenging summer for Brockton authorities, we can keep crime and drama down and amusement up at this July’s Brockton fair (which let’s not forget is supposed to be a family event).

I grew up in a year one day at the Brockton Fair in 1955. In a really bad decision, my mother let me and brother go with my grandfather and my uncle. The cigars came out after the first corner and the beer and shots ran like gold as soon we got to the races.
My brother and I imbibed as soon as they went under the grandstand to bet – every race. Did I say I was 7 and he was 5 1/2?
After the races, the adults went down the midway where there were two tents, one for white strippers and one for black strippers. We were told to stay right there. As soon as they went into the paleface teepee, we snuck in and struck black gold! We were there for only a minute but it was ecstasy.
Then we puked, over and over, after cigar smoke, beer, coke, candy and cotton candy. I and my brother never, ever went anywhere with those rascally degenerates alone again.

I don’t under stand why people take pics of someone smoking a cigarette I know it’s bad for a child. But I am sure we all have done something wrong in life I know I have would you want someone taking a picture of you doing something wrong and posting it all over the Internet something like that could ruin someone’s life

I think it’s wrong that ppl judge others so much it is her choice on how she lives her life an what she wants to do with it. If she wants to smoke ciggs weed crack an drink while she’s pregnant that is her choice noone eles’s she will have to live with the choices she made so how about everyone grow up an act like adults instead of acting like a bunch of little kids who’s parents never taught them any manners or respect.. Stop being so judgemental

I grew up in Brockton but now live elsewhere. I choose to work at one of their middle schools with the kids that have emotional impairment from abuse, neglect and trauma. The city certainly has its share of problems. I for one, have HATED that god-awful trashfest of a fair since i was in high school. It’s a sess-pool for the worst of the worst. It’s everything I hate about my hometown mashed into one vomit-soaked spot for 2 weeks. My buddy used to work security for Brockton Hospital, and he said the homeless guys that come in drunk on mouthwash year-round are the same ones that run the rides. I steer clear.

But the city? It cannot be counted out. It creates toughness. It demands hard work and can produce champions.

Brockton has one of the best high schools in the country. The Football program has been rated the best in the state by Sports Illustrated. The marching band has won national awards for best in the country. The drama club consistently wins awards for being one of the finest in New England. It is a powerhouse in every sport. Legends like Rocky Marciano and Marvin Hagler were formed here. Future champions will be carved directly due to it’s “no bullshit” mentality.

Sure it’s not the easiest place to grow up. But easy upbringing creates weakness. A lack of perspective. An inability to handle real adversity. Entitlement. Jaden Smiths of the world.

I for one am PROUD of my upbringing. Brockton asked me to “put up or shut up” at an early age. Survival of the fittest. Not the ones with the most money or the best bake sales but one that teaches you to stay strong when pushed. Dig deep. Find pride and beauty out of things that challenge you to do so.

To each his/her own. But for me? You can keep your Westwoods, your Norwells, your Halifaxes and your Eastons.

    I’m from Brockton.

SE Mass is a strange place. Almost impossible to believe you could have Brockton and New Bedford so close to places like Duxbury, South Darmouth etc.

Im sorry but the brocton fair is a craphole its just a playground for criminalistic activity and if the local police cant control the problem then it should be shut down for good someone is either getting stabbed, shot , jumped, robbed, its really sad for the good people that actually go there to have fun js.

omg. anybody that read’s this a-hole’s story should go to your doctor and tell them to admit you, because your head is up your ass. The story isn’t close to being true. first off the car fire at the demo did not have half the grandstand evacuated, and as far as I have heard there have been no problem’s at all, THAT’S NO PROBLEM’S AT ALL, at the fair. you people should worry about your self’s and not what other’s are doing. I see you all have big balls on the internet, but your all pussies,. let me see you say stuff that you write to somebody’s face. bet none of you have the balls to do that. SO SHUT THE FUCK UP P.S. IF YOU DON’T LIKE BROCKTON. STAY THE FUCK OUT OF MY CITY, WE DON’T WANT YOU HERE. STAY IN YOUR OWN SHITTY LITTLE TOWN’S. GFY

Ummm, first of all you don’t “see” someone “say something”. You HEAR it. You HEAR someone “say something”. You are NOT doing your beloved city of Brockton any favors by posting in it’s defense. You are a catalyst for more jokes. I did not grow up in Brockton, but I had to go there all the time since my aunt’s live there. It sucks, and I grew up in Waltham so I know what suck is!

me and my friend boris. we make funny pranks. then to serious pranks. not like jokes. like statement. we have company now and make many statements in mass.

mostly the worcester. we have actors. they make city look bad. smoking pregnant women, yelling and screaming things in street people, beggars, people they urinate on signs people, homeless signs, strollers on fire, forty gallons of hobo cum found in unmarked police car, that sort of thing. etc.

any way, we do this in brockton. brockton like the worcester but bad now. we send many actors there. i like this.

  • July 6, 2015 at 2:45 pm

The picture of the pregnant woman smoking and drinking…proof that Darwin’s theory of “Natural Selection” is something we’ve now managed to make work both ways.

I think it might be time to get a large beer and hit refresh a couple times. This has all the makings of some good family entertainment without the carnival fire and fugly people getting drunk and fighting.

  • WTF..Worcester
    July 6, 2015 at 12:36 pm

Ok..You all need to calm down. It is TBS.. NOT MSNBC. IT is a story about the unfortunate turn of events during a family friendly event. The fact that the information may not be reliable means nothing. Areas of Brockton sucks, areas of Worcester suck, areas of the town I live in suck. The town I live in, Webster, was listed with Brockton as one of the shittiest areas to live. I bought a house there anyway. Yes, Webster can look like a dump in areas, so does Worcester and Brockton. I do two 5Ks in Brockton every year and I never have a problem there. I was born and raised in Worcester and I am terrified of my old neighborhood.

Point is… people are going to say bad things because that BAD things are the things that draw attention. Same thing with regular news. How oftedn do you hear the happy stories about people working together to build a garden? You don’t. You hear about he men sitting on washing machines smoking dope in Brockton. You hear about the heroin needles found in Crompton Park in Worcester. You hear about the drive by shootings in Worcester. You hear about the old mill fire and the kid sitting on a roof eating pudding while watching.

You don’t like what TBS has to say… Simple: DON’T READ IT! I found what TBS said about Webster hilarious! I live there, a picture he took was a block from my house, and sure I could have gotten offended, but I didn’t. Why? BECAUSE IT’S A BLOG! Brian Williams was not outside doing a story… one of the bloggers was driving around taking pictures. End of story.

So either calm the fuck down, take it as it is, a joke, and pull up your big boy diapers… or get the fuck out. Bitching only makes it more entertaining.

    • WTF, WTF?
      July 6, 2015 at 2:03 pm

You don’t like the bitching? You get the fuck out. Besides, I thought you said it made things more entertaining, which would seem to be a plus, given that only a moron – and yes, there are a few around here – would mistake this blog for anything remotely resembling a news organization..

I am disgusted by the author’s tone. I bought a home in Brockton regardless of the naysayers ignorant opinions and scorn for the city. The Brockton fair is a lot of fun and great for families. The author was so one sided and totally played on the snotty attitude that comes from elsewhere. I have coached the youth softball in the city, gotten to know the neighbors, and have begun to appreciate the city. With that said I have begun to get completely disgusted with the awful attitudes the city receives from out of towners. Shame on the girl smoking. I don’t believe it represents all the fair goers. Shame on the crappy journalist too!!!

I have lived in Brockton all my life. I graduated from Brockton High in 2011 and this May I graduated from Bridgewater State University with high honors (magna cum laude) a bachelor of arts degree. Brockton is not as bad as this author portrays it to be. If you have ambition there are numerous opportunities for you here in Brockton! By the way, I dont know about the rest of you, but “turtleboysports” doesnt sound like a reliable source of information!

She’s drinking a smoothie.. Those cups are only sold at the smoothie souvenir stands so, unless there’s a picture of her pouring alcohol into that cup or legit drinking a beer, don’t exaggerate. She’s a shitty person for risking the life of her baby but be accurate or prove she drank alcohol before posting it.

  • Katie V
    July 5, 2015 at 10:32 pm

Thanks for this perspective! What a high brow judgmental attitude by this author! I don’t agree with people smoking while pregnant, but I also don’t think it’s going to change anything by publicly shaming a stranger. We went to the Brockton fair tonight to watch the demolition derby and it was great! My mother has been coming for 50 years, since she was a teenager. Now we go together as a family and we have a great time.

If you want to find something negative, you can find it anywhere you look. Same goes for finding something positive. How about all of the families out there together? How about all of the kids who are interacting like humans and not playing video games for 5 minutes? How about the opportunity to be exposed to other people and walks of life different from your own? Clearly that’s not an experience valued by this author.

Yes, this may well be the last year of the fair and it feels like a shame to me. Let’s fill the space with a shitty casino so we can draw in an entirely different, family un-friendly crowd with the promise of another addiction in this world. No thanks.

Brockton will probably never be on the ‘best places to live’ list, but plenty of people live there and have done so for generations. Some have gotten out and some raise their families proudly there. But in my opinion, for you to judge the fair and it’s attendees so harshly says a lot more about you than the people of Brockton.

Get off your high horse and have a little fun. Everything on earth can’t be sterile for your beige little existence. And by the way, that $25 pays for parking and admission for the carload, so it’s actually quite affordable for an entire family. But it’s more effective writing to gloss over that for the sake of hyperbole, eh? Thanks for nothing.

No, Brockton sucks. If you like that shitty city then by all means stay there, entrenched in the ick that it is. We who left long ago found it to be the best move we’ve ever made. And from the outside looking in, we’ll judge all we want.

Well said, Katie. I’m so tired of people putting my entire city down because of a few bad apples. I’ve lived here since 1979, visited the fair nearly every year & have never had a problem. There’s more positive in Brockton than negative, it’s just that the negative is what always gets the attention. You’re not alone in wishing this wasn’t the last year for the fair, only to open up the area for more negative activity. I, for one, sincerely hope the casino plans fall through.

I couldn’tve said this any better, i’m a hard working 30 something middle class father of 3, born and raised in brockton, happily married and raising my children proudly and safely here in Brockton. I’m tired of all the townies shooting their mouths off about this city. Growing up in this city is tough, i agree, but i doubt i would be the man i am today if i were to have grown up in a quiet little town like Abington or Hingham. I owe this city some gratitude for giving me a good head on my shoulders, and i look forward to seeing my children become brave, intelligent young adults in this beautiful city that i proudly call my hometown.

      • Josh
        July 7, 2015 at 2:31 pm

I grew up and Brockton, too. I’m by no means a townie. Lived in that shithole for 32 years and finally got out in 2007. So singing to the chorus, buddy. People are entitled to their opinions about where they’ve lived, and it’s their prerogative if they want to leave for whatever reason. You want to stay, then stay. But for those of us who left, we’re entitled to our opinions about why we left. And if that means a critical and harsh opinion of the city, then tough. Deal with it. I left because Brockton sucked. If that makes you cry and whine and feel the need to sing from the top of Tower Hill at D.W. about how wonderful your city is, then go for it. It falls not only on my deaf ears, by thousands of others.

I agree, I was born there, but moved before I went to fifth grade, but I still visited when I could. My mother used to work there every year at Tootsies, so I would get free stuff, never mind that though. I lived probably 15-20 minutes away from the fair, tbh I can’t really remember, but it was down the street from Huntington Elementary. Anyways, I never had a problem living there. My neighbors on the left and on the right were literally like family to me, and my brother and sister graduated from Brockton High. You just need to pick and choose your friends there, but anyways, Brockton’s not that bad. If you see the hell-hole where I live now you’d take a double-take. I moved from Brockton, to Taunton, and finally to Snellville, Georgia. It is the most ghetto place I’ve ever lived. If you seen my house you would probably argue, but I’m serious. You’re allowed to swear in class, pull out your phone in class, sag your pants, etc. We may have a new principal, but it’s still rotten. Point of this paragraph, Brockton is not bad when you live in the south…
