This is Clinton High School assistant basketball coach Mike Garofoli:
You might recognize him from the Internet. He usually appears on random people’s Facebook pages, starting fights about politics and saying insane things. For instance, we recently saw a left-leaning woman named Christine Peterson share her thoughts on the military budget:
Pretty standard opinion for your average liberal American. But we’re not here to agree or disagree with her. We’re here to talk about Coach Mike Garofoli’s reaction to it. First a veteran named Sean Antaya, who is friends with Ms. Peterson, offered an alternative right wing point of view:
Again, we’re not here to talk politics or agree or disagree with Sean here. He’s entitled to his opinion and she’s entitled to hers. But I think we can all agree that as a veteran Sean has at least earned our respect. Coach Garofoli disagrees:
Yea, because the American military has been at peace for 90 years straight. Gulf War? Korea? Vietnam? Iraq 2.0? Afghanistan? Those things never happened. Ever.
Sean disagreed with Coach:
A normal person would tread lightly after reading something like that. Pretty heavy stuff. Not Coach though. He decided that he’d call this veteran dumb for volunteering for an “illegal war,” because all Sean and people like him do is get paid to “play Army”:
Yup, this guy is paid by the taxpayers of Clinton to guide young male children, many of whom will go on to serve their country. Nice.
He was just getting warmed up though. Next he told the veteran that he “didn’t fight for me or your country”:
Because if the American military didn’t fight terrorism, they’d probably be nice to us I guess.
Next he decided he’d insinuate that Sean’s friends died because they were foolish enough to volunteer to serve, blame his friends who were killed in combat for creating ISIS, and then tell Sean he was dumb and foolish for serving his country:
Oh, and he has a link!! So you know he knows what he’s talking about.
Anyway, we searched Coach Garofoli some more on the Facebook machine and found out he’s been spewing crazy shit like this for a while. For instance, one of his big things is that Syrian people shouldn’t reproduce:
Because it’s just that simple. Syrian people should be smart and just get out of Syria. Sure, they’re leaving their entire lives behind and becoming a refugee isn’t exactly a simple process. But this white guy from Clinton has it all figured out.
Oh, and stop reproducing too. Only people from wealthy, first world countries should be having babies. People living in poverty all around the world should just stop reproducing so their species dies out.
Never mind the fact that during World War 2 people in the United States didn’t stop popping out children. Never mind the fact that the only way to confront death is to create life. Never mind the fact that some people choose to be optimistic and want to work to make the world a better place for the next generation. Never mind the fact that rape is quite common in war torn countries, and rapists don’t generally wear rubbers. Never mind the fact that birth control isn’t exactly easily accessible in Syria, and if you get caught with it you get thrown off a building by fundamentalists for being a heretic.
Those things don’t matter, because only an idiot would reproduce if they lived in a country where the life expectancy is lower than it is in the United States.
Considering Mike Garofoli is left-leaning and runs in left-leaning circles, this didn’t go over too well with his friends on Facebook. Nevertheless he persisted
“If somebody can’t provide for an optimal life for a child they shouldn’t have them.”
Yup, that’s the kind of world I want to live in. A world where other people who aren’t Turtleboy get to decide whether or not my current socioeconomic condition is “optimal” enough so that I should be allowed to bear children.
One of the factors that inspires people to create babies in such a bleak environment is a faith in God. But Coach Garofoli also has strong opinions about religion, and if you’re a religious kid on the Clinton High School basketball team and you believe in God, your coach thinks you’re one of the two major problems our world has:
Oh, and if you went to a prayer vigil for someone who died, you’re an idiot:
Stupid religious people!!!
Anyway, if this guy were some nobody on the Internet we wouldn’t mind shaming him. But the fact that he’s employed by the Clinton Public Schools and is in a position of influence around children is scary. Just sayin.
He is a VOLUNTEER only and NOT on our staff. I was informed of his stupid comments about 5 minutes ago and have forwarded them to the CHS admin and our co-ADs. I truly apologize for his ignorance!”
