Big ups to David Ortiz for becoming the 27th member of MLB’s 500 home run club by hitting this smash in Tampa Bay today:

Chilling. And I just wanna make this clear because apparently there are some people out there who say otherwise –  David Ortiz is the greatest player in Red Sox history and it’s not even really debatable. Yet whenever I see people rank them, it’s always Ted Williams, Yaz, and then Papi or Manny.

No. Just no.

Look, Ted Williams was one of the greatest hitters of all time, and an all around better person than David Ortiz or anyone from our generation really is capable of being. He was raised in a time when men were men, and when America was attacked he quit baseball in the prime of his career and served his country for three years. David Ortiz and pretty much 99% of professional athletes today would never do that.

But facts are facts. Ted Williams might’ve been a great regular seasons hitter, and is the only player to ever hit over .400, but he played in a grand total of ONE postseason his entire career. The Red Sox went 140-50 in 1946 and won the pennant. But in the seven game World Series he had no home runs, 1 RBI, and hit .200. He never won a World Series.

Yaz was a great hitter, but he was also pulled a Craig Biggio – he refused to retire and ran up his stats. He hit 30+ home runs only three times. And he did win a triple crown, but he only played in two postseasons – 1967 and 1975. In a seven game loss in 1967 he hit .400 and hit three home runs. He was a great postseason hitter, but he only made their twice.

David Ortiz led his team to the playoffs eight times, and won the World Series three of those times. I don’t give a shit if he was on steroids, everyone was juicing. But everyone didn’t hit in the clutch like he did. He’s got 17 postseason home runs, 60 RBI, and a batting average of .295. Steroids don’t do that – balls do. Big balls. That’s what Papi’s always had.

That’s why every time I hear Felger bitching about how whiny Papi is I wanna strangle him. He can be as whiny as he wants because he’s the greatest Red Sox player of all time. He came back on crappy, underpaid one year deals time and time again. He knows that as a DH during the steroid era he’s gonna need every RBI and hit he can get, so I don’t blame him for complaining about scoring errors that screw him over.

Even this year Papi is on pace to hit 35 and 100. He might be able to do this for a couple more years. And when he’s gone, there will be no replacement for him, and we will all fully appreciate his greatness. He’s a legend and one day Turtleboy Jr. and I will sit down and watch our Red Sox championship DVD’s and he will learn who the greatest Red Sox player of all time really is.

    A few corrections:

    Yaz only hit 452 homers

Ted Williams was the LAST guy to hit 400, not the only one. He also lost almost 5 years due to the Marines. Don’t forget he also served in Korea

He’s also arguably the greatest fisherman ever.

Nobody was better than Williams. Love Papi and all but give that guy an extra 5 full seasons in his prime. She me would call him the greatest ever

Sorry.I respectfully disagree. (naaahh, that B.S. stats don’t bear out your argument.)Teddie Ballgame is tops in batting ave, OBP, Home runs (521). Sure Papi is the more clutch in the post season, but it is easier to get there in this era. Teddie would have made the playoffs six times total with today’s standards. Doesn’t matter that he served his country for three possible prime years. Still the best “All Around” Boston Red Sox player.

A DH greatest player ever, that’s brilliant. Boggs,Rice,Yaz,Teddy,Foxx,Evans, just to name a few, the wild card gave Ortiz those extra opportunities otherwise they only would’ve made the playoffs a couple times, and 500 is nothing on Roids , arod passed willie f-ing mays and no one cares and that piece of shit is much greater than that fat fuck big sloppy. He’ll make the Red Sox hall of fame though.

3 rings for Papi. People forget how lean it was in these parts. People can argue about stats etc, but he has the goods. He was a monster in the playoffs.

According to Wikipedia and Politico: “He also finished third in Boston’s mayoral race that year [2013] with 560 write-in votes.”

    Best of all time.

Those 190 game seasons were grueling for the disembodied head of Ted Williams.

“The Red Sox went 140-50 in 1946 ”

    Should be 104. Funny typo.

Dude, you are a fuckin’ joke to say a DH is the best player in Red Sox history, an absolute joke. Go eff a turtle. I’m done with you.

What would so cool if Papi came back as a batting coach but not just yet. He has more homers and game clinching hits left in his tank no doubt.
