Here’s a story that’s getting people up in Fitchburg all juiced up….
Fitchburg Sentinel: Pastor Don Long said there had never been any vandalism at Faith Christian Church, but that changed Wednesday morning when a sign in front of the church was defaced with red spray paint.
“I heard people expressing their opinions about the sign. It is the day we live in. People just shut down conversation. They have the right to express something, but this is not a way to express it,” said Long about the vandalism.
When the church’s secretary arrived for work Wednesday she found that someone had spray-painted a banner hung in front of the church that reads, “Marriage is 1 man + 1 woman….and you know it.” The vandal had spray-painted over the words “1 man+1 woman” with “LOVE” that included the “O” in the shape of a heart. Long said the sign is one of four the church rotates on the church’s property throughout the year. He said this particular sign had been up for “two or three weeks.” Another one of the signs expresses disagreement with abortion.
“America is still, hopefully, a land of free speech,” Long said. “You don’t have to agree with me.”
Long said he is “not interested” in finding out who spray-painted over their sign. The church does not have video surveillance of its outside property. However, he did report the incident to the police department, but insisted they make no attempt to find the vandals. He said he is more interested in the community being more open to others’ differences of opinions and “respectfully” expressing them.
First of all, Turtleboy’s biggest beef with this sign is that it’s not even accurate. Marriage isn’t “1 man and 1 woman.” That makes it sound equal. Marriage is 90% woman, 10% man, at best. Do you think Turtleboy had any say whatsoever in how our house was furnished? Do you think my opinion about what we were gonna get for a bed set carried any weight at all? Do you think I like to Dance Moms? No. Anyone who thinks that marriage is 1 man and 1 woman doesn’t know the first thing about marriage.
Look, Turtleboy is down with gay marriage, and gay rights, and all that fun stuff. But this is nothing more than fascism. As a matter of fact, I’d call it a hate crime. Imagine if this was a mosque, and they wrote something like, “Mohammed is the prophet.” Then someone came around and spray painted “pedophile” or “prophet.” The same people who are outraged over this sign would be the first people calling it a hate crime and demanding the Department of Justice investigate it.
It doesn’t matter what they wrote on that sign. This is America and they have a right to say it. Where does it end? What speech is considered so intolerable that it cannot be allowed? They said they hang a sign protesting abortion too. We gonna spray paint that one because it’s anti-woman? If you don’t like what a sign says then make your own sign or stand in front of the sign you don’t like with another sign. But defacing signs like this simply because you’re too triggered by what it says is nothing more than censorship and fascism.
Oh I’m sorry, are their words hurting you? Are you triggered by people who have different opinions? Yea, they should take their sign inside so you don’t have to look at it. Because that’s America is all about. Protecting people from dangerous words.
Oh OK. Well next time they decide to put a sign up they should run it by you first to make sure it’s not a “problem.” The fact of the matter is they DO get to tell you what you “know.” If you don’t actually “know” these things, then you are free to laugh at them and call them dumb on Facebook. It’s like if they put up a sign that said, “you know that Nickelback is good.” Obviously you don’t, but they still have a right to say it.
Anyway, gay marriage is a done deal. It’s over. Gays won. These guys putting up a sign like this is like the Colts putting up a participation banner. So I don’t understand what exactly they’re trying to prove. Are they trying to stir the pot? Absolutely. The pastor was trying to prove that social justice warriors are nothing more than fascist hypocrites and they did EXACTLY what he knew they would do.
I figured this pastor was an asshole at first when I saw those signs. The part about, “and you know it”- come on now. That’s just poking the SJW. But then when they interviewed this guy I realized how brilliant this was. He doesn’t want to know who did it. He doesn’t want them punished. He’s OK if you disagree with him. He just wants people to be open and respectful. He’s got the moral high ground now. Whoever defaced his sign with “love” did the exact opposite of what that word means. Plus, this isn’t exactly the Westboro Baptist Church. They apparently do things to help people in the community:
See that right there? By feeding the hungry they’re actually doing something to better society while SJW’s change their Facebook profile picture into a rainbow.
Here’s another thing – cut it out with this “love” shit.
Dumbest slogan I’ve ever heard in my life. “Love is love.” Give me a freaking break. Could you come up with a more broad, general, unoriginal slogan than that? If “love is love” is what you’re basing your opinions on, then you should support incest, polygamy, bigomy, and beastiality, because “love is love,” right? Turtleboy is pro gay marriage, but anti-meaningless feel good slogans.
No Brian, racists shouldn’t “have to change what they believe in.” No one should ever have to change what they believe in. Only a power hungry fascist would think that. I’m not cool with racists, but I’m cool with their right to be ignorant and close minded. And I think it’s a lot more dangerous to force people what to think rather than to put up with their ignorance.
It doesn’t matter what year it is – homophobia will always be OK. Not because there’s anything wrong with gay people, but because there’s something seriously wrong with telling other people what they can and cannot think.
OK, now we’re talking. This is the PERFECT way to combat a dumb sign like this. Fight speech with your own speech, but don’t do it by destroying other people’s property.
Turtleboy’s thoughts on gay marriage is pretty simple – the government created this monster when they started recognizing the institution of marriage legally. This person hit the nail right on the head:
Marriage is a religious covenant. It shouldn’t be recognized as a thing by the government any more than a first communion or the donning of the first burqa. The government wants you to get married instead of cohabitate for tax purposes and things like that. So what they should’ve done was recognize civil unions for EVERYONE, including gays, heterosexuals, and people who wanna be in a legally binding contract with their brother or best friend. There should be no “love” involved, since love is nothing more than a feel good emotion that can’t be measured, quantified, proven, or documented.
But this is what heterosexual conservatives wanted. They wanted the government to recognize their marriage, but not other people’s marriages. Sorry, but you can’t ask the government to recognize a religious institution and then whine about it when people who don’t subscribe to your religious beliefs want the same legal protections.
The bottom line is this is America. And as much as I disagree with this guy, he has a right to not only feel this way, but to publicly express it. It’s a big reason why I hate being on the same side of the aisle as SJW’s on issues like this. Because Turtleboy is all about free speech, and they’re all about crushing speech unless that challenges their limited world view.
P.S. If you think this church has a shortage of anti-gay marriage signs, you severely underestimated them.
