Washington Post: Colin Kaepernick’s decision not to stand during the playing of the “The Star-Spangled Banner” has had a ripple effect across the sports world in the past week. It has elicited reactions — both in support and in condemnation — from players around the NFL and beyond, military members and even President Obama. A prominent name from professional hockey added his opinion to the mix Tuesday, and it wasn’t in favor of Kaepernick’s social justice protest.

“If any of my players sit on the bench for the national anthem, they will sit there the rest of the game,” USA Hockey Coach John Tortorella told ESPN’s Linda Cohn ahead of the World Cup of Hockey.

“I know these are hockey games … but I do look at it like it’s for my country,” Tortorella said (via the Columbus Dispatch). “What Nick is doing by far dwarfs what we do. We’re entertainers; we’re playing a sport. But with my son over there — this might sound selfish — I want to team up with him and help my country,” Tortorella continued. “I get pretty caught up in representing my country. There’s nothing like it.”

Calgary Flames President of Hockey Operations Brian Burke who is a senior advisor for Team USA said he respects athletes’ right to “express opinions, vote, attend political rallies and make political contributions. “But I don’t believe the field of competition is a place to make political statements,” Burke said.

“I think as athletes we have a great platform and to use it to influence social change is within our right,” said David Backes, who will play forward for the Americans. “Whether you should do that during the anthem, which stands for our country and salutes those who have given their lives for our country, allowing athletes to play, is a matter of debate. I have my opinions on that.”

God bless you John Tortorella. Don’t get me wrong, he is an AWFUL coach. Just awful. He’s on his fourth team, and he only keeps getting jobs because he rode his players to a Stanley Cup in Tampa Bay 12 years ago. I remember when the Bruins beat his Rangers in five games back in 2013. It was almost too easy. This is a coach who can’t deal with skilled players, which is why he got rid of Marion Gaborik, and he couldn’t make the playoffs in Vancouver. He’s the kind of coach who would rather you sacrifice your face by putting it in front of a Zdeno Chara slapshot than have you score a hat trick.

And THAT is why this commentary from Torts is not in the least bit surprising. I was wondering when someone was gonna finally man up and say it. We all get that Colin Kaepernick has a right not to stand. Everyone knows that. But a coach and a team have the right not to play or pay their employees if they feel like they’re damaging the brand. And that’s exactly what Kaepernick has done to the San Francisco 49ers. He’s made them the most unlikeable team in the league. The coach is your supervisor, and the owner of the team is your boss. If they tell you to stand for the anthem, then your ass is gonna stand for the anthem. Don’t like it? Maybe they’ll hire you down at Centro Los Americas. They pay pretty well over there.

This is why Turtleboy loves the NHL. It’s the only league where men can still be men. Where being a social justice warrior activist will get you beat up by a 4th line right winger. The players give no fucks about anything, and neither do the coaches. Your feelings are irrelevant, and your activism isn’t welcomed.

Naturally the infamous racist from ESPN, Stephen A. Smith, has a huge problem with this stance from Torts:

“He should be stripped of his title as coach as Team USA unless he changes his stance.”

That sums it up right there doesn’t it? If you don’t subscribe to SJW ideology then you can’t have a job.

Is this guy on crack? Think about that for a second. He wants players to be able to sit down during the National Anthem……WHILE THEY ARE PLAYING FOR TEAM USA!!!! You can’t make this shit up. If you hate what your country represents so much that you can’t stand for the National Anthem, then why would you ever want to represent your country in international competition? How does that make any sense? It’s dumb enough to take a stance like this when you’re getting paid millions of dollars a year to play for a team named after dumb white people who went all the way to California because they thought they’d find gold there. But when you’re wearing our flag on your uniform, why the hell would you want to sit down during the National Anthem?

Your sight has been reported as a racist site to the FBI. They have been aware that your family is in law enforcement.
You have been using your brother the chief of police and other officers out of Worcester to obstruct justice for you.
Any law enforcement involved with this site I would suggest that you stay away as your career is put on notice.

Enough truly is enough. Abuse of power in Central Worcester ma from Auburn through Worcester to Fitchburg. Serious systemic racism with a reach into the court system as well.

    This is systemic racism.

Agreed. If blacks don’t want to respect the flag, they should be forced. Fuck their freedom.

The Coach has every right to bench those players. While we are all free to express ourselves we are also subject to the consequences of our actions. Those who sit when the national anthem is being played are simply exercising their first amendments rights. And I also exercise my first amendment rights when I refer to these people as a bunch of Ungrateful Jackasses! quite frankly if they do not like this country they are free to move to a nation more suitable to them!

Every time I go to a hockey game I stand for both the American and Canadian national anthems, which are played in both countries. I don’t see Canadians sitting during ours when I’m in Canada. We have lost so much respect for each other it is sad that some choose to lose respect for a symbol of our Nation now too.

      Bravo for this coach!

Is ESPN still broadcast? Why? It has less value than Kevin Lynch.

So would you prefer that black people in this country still had to sit in the back of the bus, drink from separate water fountains and not have the right to vote? Because that would be the case if people who didn’t “like this country” moved somewhere else.

I have two professionals I work with, both black. They grew up in the Jim Crow (Democrat) South. They are ashamed by the rhetoric and actions of the BLM movement. The Evangelical blacks are too. Many are still poor due to Government policy, not racism. They are ashamed too. I will bet $100K cash that the whiners in the BLM are the products of Public Schools. Why do they fail or drop out in large numbers? Is is because of racism? The teachers are black too. Everyone gets the same books and curriculum and the same opportunity within our society. Whether you admit it or not it is up to the individual and their family to take advantage of what’s available.

Education leads to a better job which leads to better self worth which leads to self pride. Don’t blame your individual failure on someone else. Those that come to the attention of the Police come to that attention for a reason. What happens after that can be unfortunate. Best bet is to not come to their attention in the first place. We require a civil society and that requires Laws.

How about respect for the people who are currently serving all over the world, away from their families and loved ones, to try and ensure that my family stays safe?

No? You don’t respect those people?

Then how about respect for my own family and the hard work they have done over the many years since they came to this country so that their children could have the best opportunities for success?

You don’t respect those people either?

How about the hardworking people who have struggled and overcome true oppression in this country, creating equal rights for all? I won’t argue that it’s taken longer for some people to be treated equally than for others, but in this country there has been incredible progress, whereas other countries ruled by despots will as soon kill those that oppose them.

Those people are not worthy of your respect?

And yes, I WILL mention veterans, because many have been maimed or lost their lives in defense of this nation, and I respect the hell out of them for doing what I could not.

So, no, it’s not a political statement. It’s a testament to all those that went before me and shared a dream that this country could be a better place than where they came from.

          • Rational person
            September 7, 2016 at 3:19 pm

Very well said. And yes, I do respect our members of the armed services who put themselves in harm’s way to keep the people of this country safe and able to enjoy the freedoms they are fighting to protect.

One of those freedoms is the freedom to protest injustice and misguided policies and practices of our government and its agents. We have the freedom to question authority when we feel our liberties are being trampled on or when our leaders get us and our soldiers embroiled in senseless wars because someone tried to kill their daddy.

It’s obvious you and I have very different opinions about this and no amount of back-and-forth is going to change that but aren’t you glad we have to right to disagree without having to worry about suffering repercussions for those opinions?

That flag is a symbol of freedom for everyone who calls themself an American!

If you choose not to respect this symbol of freedom which thousands have died to defend your right to be stupid, then leave this country, go back wherever you hail from and exercise what they have for freedoms.

Well, thank you for your service and I mean that sincerely. This discussion is actually about the national anthem but if you read my reply to KJDS, it could apply to standing for the Pledge of Allegiance as well.

            Thanks for your service.

Not to be an asshole… But how is America free? We have to pay for the right to do just about anything in this country… We can’t buy or sell anything without the government in our business, want to put an addition on your house? Need a permit… Kids lemonade stands get shut down because they lack the proper permits… you can’t hunt or fish to support your family without payment to buy that right… you can’t collect rainwater that falls on your property… Any license of permit that we need to do anything is a right that was taken and sold back to us. You can’t own your own land without making annual recurring payments to the government. You don’t even own your own body… It’s illegal to take a drug without permission from a doctor that pays for his license to practice medicine! You can’t even legally kill yourself!! We are told from the time we are children how free we are… To quote Jeff Daniels in Newsroom… “Canada has freedom, Japan has freedom, the UK, France, Italy, Germany, Spain, Australia, Belgium has freedom. Two hundred seven sovereign states in the world, like 180 of them have freedom.” The government has taken freedom after freedom away all in the name of protecting us from ourselves, or other from us, or the environment, etc…

To continue Daniels rant… Why are we the greatest? “there is absolutely no evidence to support the statement that we’re the greatest country in the world. We’re seventh in literacy, twenty-seventh in math, twenty-second in science, forty-ninth in life expectancy, 178th in infant mortality, third in median household income, number four in labor force, and number four in exports. We lead the world in only three categories: number of incarcerated citizens per capita, number of adults who believe angels are real, and defense spending, where we spend more than the next twenty-six countries combined, twenty-five of whom are allies.”

I don’t see how you can call someone stupid for realizing these facts…
