We got an update on the Andover hockey story. And as usual, the incompetent people in charge of running this fine town’s public education system have screwed it up again:
Andover Townsman: Principal Philip Conrad will ask the School Committee tonight for the funds to hire an independent firm to investigate the varsity boys’ hockey program. The school district was initially asked by the Department of Children and Families to hold off on conducting an investigation while the state agency investigated charges that three hockey coaches, including head coach Chris Kuchar and two assistants, withheld water and food as punishment for losing games. The district put all three of the coaches on leave upon notice of the DCF investigation. The school department also said it would hold off on its own investigation until after the DCF investigation was over.
“Given the level of public interest in this situation and the need to have a finding which cannot be challenged for any reason, as well as the fact that the coaches have a reporting relationship to me as their supervisor, I feel that it is in the best interests of Andover High School to retain professional services,” Conrad said in the release. “An independent investigator will provide an objective, holistic review of this situation, which will aid us greatly as we move forward from this unfortunate situation.
Wait…..what? You’re the principal. If you can’t provide an “objective review of this situation” then you shouldn’t be the principal. It’s your job to be objective. Of course what he really means is that his boss, Shelley Berman, wants the coach gone because he’s mad that his loser son Dale got benched in favor of a freshman two years ago. Therefore he can’t be objective.
Conrad said in an interview this afternoon that the investigation will be free of any interference from the school district.
“I thought it was the best thing to do to make sure it was independent and completely above board so that it could not be questioned,” Conrad said. “It will make sure whoever does the investigation does not have an agenda and no one could accuse anyone of having an agenda.”
Translation – by dragging this out as long as possible we can assure that by the time we find a third party and they investigate this, the season will be over and Coach Kuchar will not have a chance to return to the bench.
Conrad said he decided to seek funding for an investigation from the School Committee on his own, and that Superintendent Sheldon Berman had no hand in the request.
“I have not had any contact with the superintendent about this,” Conrad said. “This is me asking the School Committee for the funds to authorize this. Of course he is aware of everything that happens in the school district, but again this is me going to the school committee and it does not have anything to do with Berman.”
What. A. Liar.
It was one thing when they were just dicking over the coach. Now they’re stealing from the taxpayers. This is what your tax dollars paying for in Andover – a third party investigation team to investigate something that we’ve already investigated and proved has no merit:
- The kids all have come out on record, as well as being interviewed by the AD and DCF, and denied that water was ever withheld from them at practice.
— Boston Herald (@bostonherald) January 26, 2018
- Receipts prove that the kids were brought to Panera bread and gotten free food.
- An email was sent by the coaches to all parents and students telling them to pack food and water, and bring money for extra food.
- Superintendent Shelley Berman blatantly lied when he told the media, “Berman told The Eagle-Tribune that the players didn’t eat for 12 hours as punishment for losing the game.” There is irrefutable proof that the trip was only 8 hours, and ample opportunity to eat and drink was provided by the coaches throughout the entire trip.
- There was a cooler full of water and food on the coach bus they took to the game.
Investigation completed, free of charge for the taxpayers of Andover. Anything in addition to this is nothing more than the state stealing money from the taxpayers. Money that could be invested in their children’s education is instead being used to fund Shelley Berman’s revenge witch hunt.
Then Principal Conrad had the audacity to say this:
“What has been lost in some of the public discord and social media discussion is that the students come first for us,” Conrad is quoted as saying.
Bullshit. If students came first for them then you wouldn’t be dragging them through this. You’d let them play hockey with the coach who has been with them all season, who knows their styles of play, and whose system they use. If you cared about kids then you wouldn’t be putting them in front of the media and forcing them to go to meetings with DCF and third party investigators. You should be letting kids be kids. But you’re not, because Shelley Berman can’t get over the fact that his sucky kid got benched for better players 2 years ago.
I’m not sure if Andover has school today, but tomorrow I’ll be setting aside some time to bombard Phil Conrad’s office with inquiries about this situation. Feel free to do the same:
